Love you guys! Was going to request an episode on nth room

Margaret Dostalik

Currently listening and very impressed by your reporting. I lived in Korea for a year, and I speak Korean at a conversational level. I recall living in Daegu (better known as the center of the Korean COVID-19 outbreak) and seeing warnings in bathrooms about hidden cameras. I'd also like to add: the fact that a soldier/soldiers were involved in the Nth Room is no surprise--you may alerady be aware of this, but all Korean men are obliged to serve almost two years in the Korean military.

and work culture in korea is indeed insane! my teaching workplace was pretty chill, and as a foreigner I definitely did not have the kind of expectations that Koreans experience, but you see stuff. It's a lovely country in many ways but the sexual culture is extremely fucked up. drinking culture is also fucked, as you would expect in a country where you can get a bottle of 15% ABV soju for about USD $1 at any convenience store. plus the educational culture is extremely high-pressure, even on young children.

the only thing I would add to this is that like when it come to extreme sex and overworking I think what makes the upskirt shot appealing is not dehumanization more generally, but a specific emasculization of men dis empowered as patriarchal figures in the traditional sense yet simultaneously at the level of women, who in turn re form that power over women through pedophile sex rings . The obsession with upskirt reproduces men's sexual dominance in normal life, precisely evolved. Upskirts exist as much for men to control women and make women feel as if they are being watched for these shots, as much as they exist to get off. also capitalism in korea came quick and fast and I think there is a relationship between memories of traditional men's power and women's disenfranchisement and the reproduction of that relationship under new sexual mores

the issue is powerful men partake in this too, which I would describe as a reactionary sexual hatred of women stemming from memories of equality

Liz i get the same deja vu thing! as soon as i get deja vu, i conjour up another image in my mind, let whatever naturally bubble up come, and then inevitably, maybe in a few days, or in a few months it will come to be!

Sleepy

its like a brief window of time that all the vibes hit the right harmony, and you can briefly peer into the folds of future space time.

I read empty planet which spent a chapter or so talking about korea and the fact that the reproduction numbers are so low there. There are of course a number of factors they highlight but a few things were clear: there doesn't seem to be a state pension program so the older generation is working much longer and that means fewer jobs for younger people, which means they stay longer at home. Numerous knock on effects but one also being that if and when couples do marry, they are older before having own place and even if considering having kids, think to only have one child.

Twitter isn't social media, it is a video game for telling celebrities to "suck my whole ass" I have been swimming in Deja Vu. Prophetic dreams I recall from years ago are coming to pass. This is all clearly explained in Philip K Dick's exegisis. The Empire Never Ended. We have the first chance in 40 years to smash the black iron prison.

Benjamin Murray

at least, when I lived there half a decade ago, they had just had the government give free pre-k childcare and were also paying couples a certain amount of money per month for merely having a child. but for the reasons you named, among others, the culture just isn't ending up with most people having kids. once women hit about 30, they are basically considered not marriage material, men and women do not believe that they can be friends, there is widespread prostitution and alcohol abuse that is often expected of men for work culture and women are increasingly not okay with that, but those are the good paying jobs that lend one to being ready for marriage, one of the major reasons people live at home is that their apartment system is basically you spending a large lump sum at once rather than a renting/mortgage situation. the younger generation in Korea literally refers to the country as "hell Joseon"

Deja vu can be a symptom of some migraines. I've had episodes that go on for hours where I feel like I remember exactly everything that's happening and can predict the next thing I hear/see. I think it happens with epilepsy too sometimes

mrakobesiye

So brace you could be having migraine aura without headaches, which does happen

Choki

I also get a lot of déjà vu. I've noticed it's getting more intense too. Interesting episode.

Have you guys seen the movie Burning on Netflix? It got totally overshadowed by Parasite but this director takes a much more honest look at this stuff. He also did a movie called Poetry. You can find it in canopy. It deals with a suicide of a teenage girl after being raped by her classmates. It's beautiful and heartbreaking

Peter Miller

Yeah, burning is an amazing film. And it's much better than Parasite

J0hn

I'm about to win $50 on a bet that Bojo lives

Dr. Ron Jambo

Women be schemin' with 20% of their brains because they're not having sex anymore. The'yre like George

Joon Park

I think you described the source of pathological desire perfectly. However the way the desired is expressed (as upskirt or peephole) is because that's the people's life there. If you spend all day working, going to and from the work place is the only time you can see other people.

Super late to this episode but there’s a whole podcast (I know Brace isn’t huge on listening to podcasts 🙃) called Chasing Warhead and it focuses on the take down of one of the largest child porn rings. Multiple western countries worked separately to infiltrate the groups and they disclose some really fucked up info. There’s a lot of similarities between the podcast and this episode, which is due to how child porn is produced and distributed (Ie young men running chat rooms and supplying new content that they’ve made with vulnerable children, use of revenge porn, the requirement of uploading new content before being allowed to consume more, etc.). Absolutely horrifying podcast - they actually interview the cousin (?) of the ringmaster, who had moved back in with her to “help” her with her children after they were born. He was creating content the minute she’d step out of the room. 🤮 anyways listening to this episode was like the missing piece to Chasing Warhead. These freaks are all connected globally...
