The opening song- it’s really bothering me. The voice says “Jeffrey Epstein” and what else???

Jaxon

'please state your name'* its from the deposition. full track on yung chomsky soundcloud

Trout Mask Original

Your description of the "trainee" process for KPOP idols is like an inventory of cult indoctrination techniques.

Cow

I always hear it as "the Jews control... Jeffery Epstein"

Joel Smith

White dudes rape tons of natives on reservations and never get in trouble too since tribal cops can’t arrest non tribal members

Ben Sowerbutts

jillian

lol theres a bts reality special from like 2013 where they go to LA and are mentored by coolio. at one point the band has to go to compton and knock on people's doors to do a rap/dance for them

Raya Cave

Fuck yeah Fairport Convention! I've had them on repeat with the Weavers and Pete and Peggy Seeger since the Folk episode. Haven't listened to Fairport in years, but I went to see The surviving members of Fairport playing a memorial concert for the 30th anniversary of Sandy Denny's death when I was 13 and I've been very attached to their music since.

Bess C

there is a gaslight coffee in logan square in chicago

Yang Wenli

Rene Saller

You're so right about Ashcroft.

Abram Blau

Although without the dietary restriction, contracts, and sexual abuse, even typical teens have it really rough there. They install suicide nets on bridges during exam time. I had students where I was their 7th hagwon of the day (private after school) that left at 9-10 at night, to still have to go home to do their homework.

Great ep, thx guys. I love kpop but have never understood why BTS is popular... there are better groups. But anyway, it’s interesting to hear about the triple S thing, because I’ve always thought Korea seemed pretty tame in terms of sex in media (i mean, back when i watched dramas, even a kiss scene was rare). And then netizens there tend to bully people (esp women) who are deemed slutty from what I understand. For example, Lee Eun-ju, the actress who killed herself in 2005 due to backlash from doing nude scenes in the Scarlett letter. Much to think about

Veronica Horn

Also, the case of the “nation’s actress” is worth noting - Choi Jin-sil committed suicide after reporting her husband for abuse, which then got her in trouble with her contract. “In August 2004, Choi Jin-sil came forward as a victim of domestic violence. Subsequently, the advertiser, Shinhan Engineering and Construction, claimed she had not kept her contractual obligation to "maintain dignity" as she had disclosed to the public her bruised and swollen face which was caused by the violence of her then husband.”

Gonna need to listen to some Wet Ass Pussy to wash this K-pop shit out of my ears.

Agave Maria

Had a roommate in Bushwick once who was a libertarian, a kpop stan, and an aspiring actress. Can’t make this up

@bobchinchillin

You mention Curtis LeMay as an Air Force General, but in keeping with the spider network theme of tactical refinement, he commanded the US Air Force in the pacific theater in wwii, specifically the sustained firebombing of dozens of Japanese cities. They pioneered the tactic of indiscriminate carpet bombing of civilian targets from low altitude with incendiary munitions to cripple industrial production targets. Was wildly effective with Japan’s close integration of worker neighborhoods and industrial production centers. Stan Loona

This video brought to you by the MIT Media Lab. 👁️

KPOP has a lot of similarities to the country music of today in terms of it being a mass produced cultural sector, as part of a larger nationalist project.

Kpop makes me feel so fucking old. I just don't get it. When I was a teenager we went to local shows, got punched in the face every now and then, absolutely destroyed our hearing listening to the worst bands imaginable, and pretended to enjoy it. What the fuck even happens at a kpop concert?

Brace's "Let-me-talk-Let-me-talk-Let-me-talk . . ." over Liz's "No-No-No . . ." bit [1:09:50] needs to be clipped and saved for posterity.

lililililili

at first it seems like just random marketing phrases and then u recognize that ppl actually listen to it, and that's not super crazy, but... that means someone had to write it, and that's what scares me

Rob Keery

Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning is the best American action movie of the century

Stephen Norrie

"I'm pretty good at Calvary tactics" - now this I've gotta hear!

Pedro Tapia

as a “big” fan of BTS and a full grown woman, some of the more dystopian aspects are so intriguing but also mortifying to me. it seems as though bts are one of the few groups not kept on such a tight leash these days, probably because they earned enough money and global recognition to bargain that. super interesting stuff.
