Osiel was released from federal prison a few months ago. Very curious as to where he is now. Also I think he was at Terre Haute not ADX at least towards the end

Christian Bendillo

I actually like it but I can’t find it anywhere. Yes I know this episode is old, just relistened lol.

I. C. Weiner

It appears to be available as a pdf on Anna's Archive

Michael S. Judge

putting a supermax prison in Terre Haute is really an insult-to-injury type of thing

Albert Schumaker III

At least Terre Haute had Eugene Debs for awhile, it’s been all downhill ever since

Waleed

The Supermax is in Colorado, brother. Terre Haute has a medium and "high" security prison (like a maximum)

WE SHOULD ALL ROT IN HELL

mike spadoni

Michael S. Judge

Brace is having a tremendous first few minutes here

MoldyTolge

antivaxers famously love cocaine, they did their own research

Bud Light

Guys, this ep is holy. Please unlock. I have many to send it to.

Nicholas CLARK

Lesley Anne Noelle

awww…right off the bat, they make me think about Virgil, I miss Virgil!

Bryan eagle

Damn who makes the music on this podcast? it’s so sick!

Parker

I lived in nuevo laredo for six months and let me tell you, the zetas presence is very real. Everybody in that town has a story about them, i also met a few guys who were involved. It was so fucked, “end of history” is a good way to put it. There was no hope for a better future in that town

thomas

new slang, the shins

Bryan eagle

I only listen to podcasts on cocaine

justdave

Who is Virgil, and why does he dress like a 'mod'?

A S

Imagine when this is everywhere and everyone, over every resource.

Gabo Goff

Amlo is interesting. He’s done lot of austerity while subsidizing oil companies. In some ways trying to avoid mistakes Chavez made with not building refineries but also not really helping during covid.

tazz

Sicario 2 is the jsoc ep. what’s the other one? anybody? thanks in advance :)

cstenzy

Probably a reference to the two Sicario movies. The first one directed by Denis Villeneueve is great, the unnecessary sequel involves drug cartels smuggling jihadis into the US so it seems like US conservative fear fantasy (didn't see it tho so I can't attest to how good it might be).

A S

Also has the amazing subtitle "Day of the Soldado".

Jared

Would love to see multipart series on specific countries, like a deep dive on the history of the cartel being intertwined with the CIA would be a great foundation for this episode.

Jimothy Realname

oh yeah? if you dont tell me the secret i'm going to join los sinaloas

yotter

Great Bibio song, not a fan of that remix tho

Karen

Seth is back!!! And once again I’ve learned a TON. Continually impressed with him, his breadth of knowledge, and his ability to communicate it to laypeople—make him a regular.

Joshua Baker

great ep, thanks for shedding further light on northern Mexico, and fuck the CIA, DEA, and USA

Justlistening

Random: anyone know if they talked about Pulse ever?

uya

1:33:22 brace and Liz are sending me secret instructions

Matthew Black

“If anyone ever called me by a diminutive I would lose my shit” The people who put diminutives on everything are Colombians. Also if you arm unit x way better than anybody else in the area all you’re doing is giving them the ability to play both sides

‘96 World Cup? Was that supposed to be ‘86 Mexico World Cup?

Matthew Black

怪獣二十面相と、怪獣二十一面相 wrt El Chapo

No, but the film's thesis of "The Internet is Hell" would really jive with them.

Oh I meant the nightclub shooting

ryan

Farm content is sick but I get so bored

Jessica S

Whoa whoa whoa - there’s no federal law against arms trafficking?? I don’t know why that surprises me. Perhaps the CIA needs to make sure nothing stands in their way, like prison, of setting up dealers. (Setting up like, setting up shop; not like setting up the way the FBI sets people up, which most certainly involves prison, lol.)

Ryan Pritchett

“Brace Belden is a vile centuries old anti-Semitic trope” - Chelsea Clinton

Ryan Pritchett

“Original music by Yung Chomsky” lmao

Jessica S

So the combo super gun is called a mini gun? Or a many gun? Lol. I was picturing like little gun made on a 3D printer or something.

a clash of purple

"Minigun" refers to models that use rifle ammunition instead of larger autocannon rounds. They're also called gatling guns. The proper name that no one ever uses is "rotary machine gun." I don't know how useful they actually are because they fire so fast, seems like a great way to waste ammo to me. The U.S. put miniguns on their helicopters in Vietnam because regular machine guns were overheating due to the doorgunners just spraying bullets wildly into the jungle... I doubt if firing a lot more bullets made much difference. The only particularly effective use I've ever heard of for these things is for the big autocannon version designed to shred armored vehicles. There's also an intimidation factor; apparently insurgents in Iraq tended to avoid units who seemed to have miniguns, so Army guys would mock up fake ones to carry around with them. If you just want to shoot some guys and you're not a total spaz, I would think a regular machine gun is plenty. But apparently both sides are using them in Mexico, so maybe they're more useful than I thought.

julio

I don't think "non-ideological" is an apt term. I know what you mean (no ideological end). But, as you guys n Seth point out, the emergence of Zeta-style narcoterrorism is a direct outgrowth of imperialism and capitalist motivations and conditions (capitalist culture).

lubacious

The super combo gun is the OICW, and it was trash.

Lesley Anne Noelle

IT DID NOT EXPLODE HEROIN WHATEVER IN AMERICA AFTER VIETNAM BECAUSE IT WAS PLANNED FOR BUT I KNOW SOMEONE WHO WAS ARMY TRAINED PSYCHIATRIST—WHY BECAUSE THEY HAD 👉🏾👉🏾👉🏾👉🏾👉🏾LIVES TO COME BACK TO IN THE BETTER 🔷fucking ECONOMY you nitwit, Will Meanaker…of the 1960’s vs POST NAFTA NOW

I have access to one of these libraries. I already messaged them via patreon - but I've requested access to the book and will scan the whole book and upload as a pdf if I get ahold of it.

The avocado cartel is interesting. Having American friends come visit Australia, they are blown away by how much we pay for fruit and vegetables, especially avocados (~$5 each). As much as our government tries to exploit Pacific Islander labour by granting working visas and paying them pittance, it will never match the access North America has to cheap produce from Central and South America. Great Ep guys.

Brendan Garcia

I remember working at Whole Foods in 2013, there was a period where it was extremely difficult to get limes in stock, and when we could they were at least 1 or 2 bucks a piece, as opposed to a normal price of 50 cents, if not like 3/$1.00. It later came out that there was some sort of cartel turf war going on involving the lime plantations.

Javier Garcia

My family is from Zacatecas. Most my cousins out there boycott avocados due to the cartel.

Javier Garcia

The most tragic part of the cartels is that they eradicate small ranch towns. I went to my mothers home town in 2018 only to find a ghost town. One of my uncles was the last holdout of arroyo seco, ZAC and got kidnapped.

Jesse

It never ceases to amaze me that Liz and Brace can do this podcast full time and tour as the band Khruangbin simultaneously.

luis

Thats so much better thank you

luis

This fucking kills me

Jack Nancy

I was down in CDMX when AMLO tried to capture Chapo's son in Culiacan - and it went realy poorly. The footage on the news was wild. The Cartels are so strapped.

Jack Nancy

I remember that very vividly.

Greg Kestenbaum

Anyone have a link to the documentary Seth recommended?

tazz

ahhh duhhhh! i’m soo stupid! i have seen bits and pieces of sicario. now that you speak so glowingly, i’m making it a point to watch it in its entirety

George P

nflonineO

I cannot remember what the name of it was, do you know?

gab

I have a PDF of La CIA en Mexico if Seth still needs it!

Bertha K

35 min into the podcast and my mind flashes back to scenes in "No Country for Old Men" - Woody Harrelson in an office tower

James Maloney

This episode is horrifying. Really wish it had been a 2-parter, or you revisit the subject soon. There were just too many times Seth didn’t have time to get into topics that sounded really interesting.

Ross Riddle

Was just trying to rescan for that as well. Did you find it?

Ross Riddle

The devils freedom 2017 La libertad del Diablo.

tubularballs

I have a sealed copy of la cia en mexico that i will trade for an autographed picture of liz.
