Thanks guys. My father has a gambling addiction and I'm an opiate addict. I really am fascinated by the intersection of addictive habits and their stranglehold on capitalism. Addictive industries are the most pure form of capitalism which to me is another obvious sign that capitalism is a soulless racket which actively discourages caring about your neighbors As an aside: Yes by the way there's 68 teams and college basketball is much better than professional. Something is more genuine about players not already having millions of dollars in their bank accounts. Also NBA coaches are pointless and rake in a LOT of money. At least in college basketball the whole system is required for winning consistently. It's truly a team sport in college and NBA often devolves into an ego driven pissing contest. And oftentimes NBA players are jackasses.

I was sitting with my 4 year old nephew over Christmas while he played with his iPad. In between the levels of the weird, ostensibly “kids” games (whole other subject there) he was playing, were ads for slots apps, poker apps (also dating apps?). And a lot of the ads were engineered so that if he tapped anywhere on the screen except the little hidden ‘x’ in the corner, it would download the app and often play it. He had like 150 apps on there that he had no idea that he’d even downloaded, but he would also just constantly switch between them, every 30 seconds. It’s like his attention span, his consciousness, was completely fractured. Talk about “the Machine Space.” It was a haunting experience.

Maybe because i feel bad because i am a british sporting gambling addict (on a streak tho lol) whose uncle is a gambling journalist and industry expert, i thought this was a very surface level pointless episode. Not that i didnt enjoy but you could have done a bit more research or got an expert on, instead of just going hey look at this and then spitballing on comparisons of addiction. The "free bets!!" gimmick online books use isn't a loss leader. Much more insidious. If a person takes the bonus, they then have to "roll over" their funds several times before they're allowed to withdraw any winnings. This is why BetDSI was indicted by New Jersey--don't remember the exact figures, but it was something like you had to bet your deposit+bonus TWENTY times over before you could take it out, which effectively meant no one would ever be able to withdraw.
