We trace California’s Dorner Days, the shootings by Dorner and the LAPD, the manhunt, the odd saga of the “manifesto,” and the legacy he left.

Anon Ibid

The AWB part of the manifesto mentions Austin but that shooter used a bolt action. I think a gear nerd like dorner would if known that

Owen Zukas

46:16 familiar story with a certain acorn

Riley Robertson

Fairly certain Dorner stole that "Walking Exigent Circumstances" line from the 2007 Keanu Reeves bad cop thriller "Street Kings" lol

Not good with knots. Can't tie a good knot, can't escape on a vessel that measures its speed in knots. 😮‍💨

sir peepus

if you can’t tie a knot, tie a lot

Bryson Martinez

Happy to see somebody is working.... fml

Marc-Antoine Plouffe

You forgot your Stephen Paddock episodes, another true crime series!

Onomatopoeialike

I didn't know what Christopher Dorner did, I searched it up after the first episode haha. Thanks for the mystery.

Dan

"what are you driving a Toyota cleric next"

Some Guy

I just watched that Curb episode yesterday and I lost my shit listening to this at work

Mark Owen

Welcome to Der Wienerschnitzel. can I take your order please?

Claire Simon

Torrance has beach access and also my parents live there so there are actually 2 reasons to visit Torrance... #factcheck

Mitch

Last apprentice I had was a just out of the navy guy who couldn't cut it as a stationary engineer. Nice guy, pretty mechanically incompetent. He might have sunk that boat in the same shoes.

Hector

Credit to Dorner for maybe knowing what type 1 diabetes is

GolfBaller

I was in Big Bear the day this all went down. There were bulletins telling everyone to stay indoors. We could see the smoke from his last stand.

Slik Smoothie

A hundred shots, a hundred shots How the fuck you miss a whole hundred shots?

k240d

I was in big bear during the man hunt. There were police check points on the roads getting on and off the mountain. The cops checking people’s cars had their guns in hand. Wild.

Brendan Garcia

There’s actually what must a shoutout to the “newspapers sounded like gunshots” in either Breaking Bad or Better Call Saul.

Lowell Phillips

Great job as always. Love the public interest features.

Jde Chzbrger

Great show, thanks. More LAPD dirt. 2003 Invasion of Iraq, National Guard unit Delta 88, AKA Trigger Happyy 88, was made up of LAPD/DA/Marshals. Like a rouge LAPD group in a war. They are part of the story in book/HBO show Generation KIll. Don't think anything ever came of it. Really nothing new to wars, but fked up regardless.

Rhod

Talk to Cerise Castle.

I think being a tumblr kid is the reason I had no clue what this was when it was going on, never even heard his name until I started becoming more of an Online Leftie and such. also the idea of liz even reading patreon comments feels rly weird for some reason

uleg0

from the moment i heard ‘my sides’ in the outro i knew that was added by 4channers

Andrew Harris

True anon I'm not Chris dorner don't shoot merch??

justdave

4.2 million! For getting shot by the police!? Now that's what I call a 'paper route'

justdave

Ima start guarding black teenagers like Im in the freakin secret service

Aaron Christmas

Googling dorner while listening and one article said "what makes a police officer kill?" Lol

Of course

"Don Lemon" (born Richardson) is nothing compared to former CNN Miami correspondent Al Sunshine (born Sunshine).

Kevin Price

Used to drive a Nissan rouge as my work truck occasionally. It’s a fine sports utility vehicle

Tanner Maddox

I’m from Corona, CA lol site of where the madness began, I remember how crazy this time period was

Faded Dr Jacoby

i always confuse Chris Dorner’s death with the one of the Dallas police sniper…equally brutal

TrueAnonPod

The penis itself should be either a glowing pink or a rich crimson; the semen should be either yellow, red, or white. See a doctor.

TangiePower

Damn, Don Lemon censored for truth.

otis

Cabins being the exception

Vito Di Stefano

National City baby!!! Southbay SD let’s go!

justdave

K, when you say 'glowing' do you mean 'flushed' - cus either way I think I might be in trouble

AbeLinkin

Dorner is a fantastic example of someone that is so dumb that they actually come full circle and wind up based. The title “Moderate Rebel” sums it up perfectly

Isaiah C

i enjoy the "true crime" episodes

AbeLinkin

We’ll find out 10 years from now that Brace and Liz work for Toyota and this entire podcast was a long con leading up to this very episode

AbeLinkin

Didn’t notice it til now but Brace and Liz seemed to oddly downplay their familiarity with 4Chan. Didn’t this whole show get started with Jeff Epstein? The thing that started QAnon, a 4Chan phenomenon?

John Morgan

Does anyone remember Eric Frein? We need an episode about Eric Frein.

Linney

Technically the 9/11 episodes are true crime?

Samuel Cain

My understanding is that, No, but the real inquiries happened offline and got collated into threads on Reddit,4chan and Facebook

AbeLinkin

Fair enough, thanks for the explanation

Dongo

I can’t believe that if I had taken a screenshot of some of this bullshit when it dropped it would be the key to a mystery being solved. I always thought all that shit was saved by archive websites

Char Kelly

Liz abs Brace not knowing what a Nissan Rouge is another hilarious ~head empty about cars~ moment from True Anon. I expect nothing less from these two 🤣

weedworf

Ive been playing a lot grand theft auto lately and now im gonna think of dorner whenever my character is on the run in the game. Thanks Brace and Liz 👍

Virgil Texas

bill lawrence ( scrubs tv guy ) is great great grandson of sarah lawrence ( college woman ). coincidence?

Stefano

I am autistic and believe Dorner was too. What happened to him was so so sad 😞

Samuel Matthew Hilton

Ha Liz reads these! 🥰 Does the into music say, "Ace Ventura... Jeffrey Epstein"? Because thats what I'm hearing.

justdave

Sooo, no part 3 im guessin?

justdave

Ya I'm lookin at it now, and somethins not right

Gulb

Loving Liz's "true crime" voice

Sean Sullivan

Now knowing there's a chance my comment will get read, I want to share something strange and potentially insulting (not intentionally). I have listened through every single cold open over the course of the last year because I pop the show on as I go to sleep, but I have, at max, listened to 3 full episodes. I rarely make it past the first 15 minutes. Still love all of you guys and I promise I will actually become a real listener some day.

Stinkamus

These intros make me suicidal

Stinkamus

you pay for this

Grimmu

that's insane 💙

Shiv

Hi Lizzzz 👋🏽 y’all also did a True Crime ep on the LV shooter! I think you’re very good at these. Props to YC for the Paperboy theme which slaps

Shiv

Also SOMEONE PLS draw the Gourmand’s Warhorse and put on twitter

Vito Di Stefano

Request for more stuff on C.R.A.S.H and the assassinations of Biggie and Tupac, that tease from last episode sounds like an exciting follow up series!

Amy

I had restarted the first episode 4 times because I couldn't figure out what I was missing 😂

Robin Palmer

Seconded, love a good truecrimeanon ep and when they do a series that lasts like 10 hours 👌🏼

Robin Palmer

The Sheild is good. When the kid rock tune busts in at the climax of episode 1 I knew these dudes were going to rock

SpookyLu

This is why I get my teeth done in Mexico, frankly. No paper trail. Maybe.

calvin kilby

I wish I was able to write songs because Chris for er absolutely is deserving of a ballad a la' streets of forbes or the wild colonial boy.

Internet jones

If your blood sugar is low you eat sugar, if your blood sugar is high you take insulin, a little too much insulin causes low blood sugar, cycle repeats forever. In the 90s and 2000s a lot of people didn’t have pumps, so they had shots and low blood sugar happened more often

Internet jones

Also when eat you chase it with insulin

hater

“shoes that attach to the bike???” i’m clipped into my pedals rn lmao

sgl

I'm still angry with myself for not buying an illustration of a California highway sign lettered "Christopher Dorner Memorial Parkway" when I saw it at an artbook fair in 2015 :(

Aaron Snelling

Glad we've got Ballistics Expert Bracey Boy Belden on the job

Jonathan Rose

But it was only fantasy The wall was too high As you can see No matter how he tried He could not break free And the worms ate into his brain

Sean Enright

Dorner’s Christie praise is 100% because he wore a cool jacket with Obama during hurricane Sandy. He was blue MAGA before it existed.

K

Jeffrey Toobin jacks himself every time he's on camera. I was not surprised at all when they caught him. Have you seen this man's overconfidence and condescension?

Floyd Hill

I just realized Brace sounds like the Blue-Haired Lawyer from the Simpsons lol.

Floyd Hill

My fav american punk band was from Torrance, CA, fuckin' F.Y.P, I can't believe they bothered to come to the other side of north america that far up back in 97, their only eastern stop in Canada, in a club that was in the basement of a Hell's Angels bar, they apparently were paid with all the beer, weed/hash they wanted plus 500 bucks for all 3 of em. 2 of them are in the not as good but still really good band Toys That Kill now, but F.Y.P were the best obnoxious, most-parent annoying band of all time at least until they got tired of playing that unique style they had and turned more melodic and Lookout! Records-ish for their last 3 albums but they always had songs of the type that made em kinda big for a blip of time circa 94-96 which could have never happened at any other moment in history. Pick up Dance My Dunce, well worth it.

Floyd Hill

Yeah, that happened in season 2 of Better Call Saul....Mike was really annoyed with his daughter-in-law after keeping the street under surveillance after her still traumatized by the death of her husband/Mike's son, it seems like she knew it was just newspapers though, she worked him a bit after knowing his secret. Also, man, I'm psyched AF right now, the 6th and Final Season of Better Call Saul finally starts airing on the 18th this month....and fuck...the 5th season was so good and the last few episodes were one hella cliffhanger. They seem to pickup a lot of things from obscure pop culture items in both shows, more so in BCS. Hell, season 5 seems to hint a lot about covid showing up....kinda proving my suspicion that it was around since a while and kept on the DL by authorities, pretty sure I had it in April 2019, where some Doctor who's also a a Doctor for the Air Force up here at the house visit I had (yeah, some towns in Canada, not a lot, but mine does have it, we can call a service early in the morning to have a doctor and a nurse show up for free at your house, the service is so useful I don't care donating to them as they are definitely underpaid. Anyways, the first time I saw a doctor, I had no signs of a bacterial infection and I told the doc, well, if it's just influenza or whatever, antibiotics won't help me right now right? (at least I got a bottle of hydrocodone syrup, which is pure in Canada, it's got nothing else in it, at least the one brand called Hycodan and script for free tylenol...was kinda gulping them down to keep the fever low). As he was leaving he said "oh there's some virus going around alright..." so this ain't just paranoid ideation. I'll let you find out the hints about covid in season 5, you have to be a fan to have spotted this too. A week later I had trouble breathing and by that time I was spitting green shit, 2 weeks after getting ill AF, they saved my life, as I wouldn't have gone to the hospital, I'd rather die than go to the ER. Scripted me antibiotics, good ones, not those fluoroquinolones that have no generics yet that are dangerous (Cipro is one of them, there's a bunch, if they're expensive and not generic, they're likely of that class), Cefzil it was. Never had a flu that lasted 3 weeks and that would have never ended because it had me feel destroyed physically and mentally more than when I actually "had" covid, which was minimal..guess I had some immunity left in summer 2020. It's really shitty that they left me rotting until I needed antibiotics, had I been able to see my own doctor really quickly back then (I called that service because mine was in vacation). It looks like it's the policy for most "moderate" cases of covid too. I would've taken Tamiflu like in 2007 when I had a huge fucking flu too, I asked for it at the ER and they scripted it, there was one box in my pharmacy and I was the only person who ever bought one to this day, but it worked for me and strangely, it was before the whole bird flu fearmongering (it never really happened outside of tiny pockets in China). Yeah wall'o'text, I don't handle caffeine too well, sorry bout that, doesn't help I type 95-100 words a minute heh.

Floyd Hill

88, how unsurprising. No wonder a black man, however how shitty he was, Eric Holder put neo-nazis as the #1 source of domestic terrorism in the US, saying it was plaguing the armed forces and law enforcement even, one big reason why patriot types were so batshit angry at the Obama admin. One of the few good things he pulled back then imo.

Floyd Hill

Yeah, I drove a Nissan Altima 2.5S Special Edition 2009 for 6 years, real good car. I seen Nissan Titans here and there, they're the big F-150/Ram/Silverado size Nissan pick-up truck basically, you don't see em often cos obviously the base of the a-hole drivers of huge pick-up trucks (that don't need em for work) who are now the most dangerous drivers of all, cops focusing on "sport" vehicles are starting to switch to those fuckin rednecks these days, and it's kinda warranted, despite how cops suck and all, those people tend not to like imported cars, a Nissan Titan must be an aberration to your typical pick-up truck driver in the US and even here in Canada.

Floyd Hill

4chan (and say 420 and others that are not 8ch (Rest In Piss) admins have nothing to do with what people do there. Also, Q was banned from 4chan, for being fake and gay, that's why it moved to 8chan and became big....all the nazis pretty much moved to 8ch at some point. 4chan back in the mid 2000's was ridiculous, especially /b/ but people don't realize that place has a cooking board and a sports board and all kind of regular subject boards, it's a blank slate for the most part, and don't imagine CP flows on there, if you post CP on there, you'll be banned and the cops will be notified....the MSM image of imageboards doesn't really reflect what happens there and who uses them, except for 8chan, and the early 2010's 4ch for a short period, which was where the people hating Obama for being black found a place that had free speech to circle jerk each other off. I used to hang around 420 a whole lot in the early to mid 2010's, as it attracted a lot more adult aged people and not many 14 year old autistic boys (no offense to your average autistic person) and the politics board was even removed from there sometime in 2015 to get rid of racists and fascists, fwiw.

Floyd Hill

I always heard "Tell us what you are" heh, but I thought it had to be "who you are", it's from that deposition that's got a video for it.

E.J. Rollins

Dorner would have loooved "Logan"
