i grew up in marin and this reminded me that synanon built walker creek ranch which is where i did “outdoor education” when i was in elementary school…CRAZY…anyway excited for the series

really leaned into the whole "irony bro" thing... it's a fascinating memoir. I recommend it to anyone. Don't have to care about jazz at all. Absolute villain, admitted to rape in the book along with a myriad of other things, but it's really engrossing.

My dad joined an small evangelical cult in Texas that’s trying to start their own version of these with a wilderness rehab Jesus camp, more oriented towards adults obviously. The family is insane, FBI informants on Maoist groups in the Bay in the 70s, taking women from isolated indigenous communities on their mission trips in the 80s. One of the hosts of The Pod "Sounds Like A Cult" was in Synanon as a child. She has a book out about the lingo of cults called "Cultish". I'm guessing at least one of you three have either read it or listened to the pod. If you haven't, they're great. The pod is light hearted - the book, not exactly.

Yeah, Art Pepper too. Pass's first record was called "Sounds of Synanon" and the band was made up entirely of people in the program (he's the only famous musician on it)
