We dig through the threads and threads of Twitter Files to discuss the cozy relationship between the FBI and the social media giant, the populist pressures behind deplatforming @realdonaldtrump, and the impossible project of content moderation at scale.

Because they’re funny and delightful

Catching up on all the episodes I missed, this one was great but for the record while Rugrats and Hey Arnold don't take place in the same universe, Rugrats and the Wild Thornberries DO take place in the same universe because they had a crossover which I remember almost nothing about except that it wasn't great

Richard Kirby

@1:24.. how do you solve the content moderation problem caused by the secret influencing of the IC? Get them out of content moderation. That would be a great of start. Duh.

Kimble

blood pressure spike every time they mention Missouri

Michael S. Judge

Every day, Jack Dorsey looks more like that manosphere guy who drinks his own piss and cum and calls his dick "my mushroom"

vermouth

what abt all gas no brakes

Brendan Garcia

The Subliminal Jihad guys are going crazy right now over Brace meeting Kenneth Anger.

justdave

*Kisses bicep* - you're just jealous

Ryan Casmirri

joke’s on you. They have your money.

vermouth

yes it is true but my name is not anon

Jerimiah

This is the most tedious and dull topic ever covered.

Matelda

I don't like movies

Brendan Garcia

James Baker was also a Bush family consigliere. They brought him in to do the Florida recount shit in 2000, and he also helped cover up Iran Contra, and probably a bunch of other shit.

NYCM&AHole

To be honest what is the difference between Twitter picking and choosing bans and when the fake news leadership editorial scum killed the Iran contra stories? Or buried all the jfk revelations? It’s all people at privately owned (even if publicly listed) companies banning certain content

SF

uh huh ok that’s nice

Andrew Lyman

Why are you giving them money

QUARANTINE DREAM

this is the guy who wrote huge paragraphs about being a gamer a few months ago hahah. what a boring person.

BTULTRA

I loved Babylon :)

Feel like Twitter moments is supposed to be a place you can go to get a traditional style lines news report broken up with tweets, but it has sorta disappeared and never really stayed up to date. Seems fixable, but you’d have to hire a Twitter Moments Newsroom to make it work.

Liam Barker

Shellenberger is the dude a while back who was arguing that Bolsonaro destroying the Amazon at unprecedented rates was good for the environment.

Sam

Talk about Mr Callahan

George P

Hearing about Nick Pickles reminds me that one of the engineers who worked on the official twin towers collapse report was called Ronald Hamburger.

Lydia Maria Child

If this podcast is full of the dumbass neoliberal "I used to like Matt Taibi when he did good work in the past, but no I just don't know..." bullshit, I'm probably going to cut the cord on this one, too. Not sure what the deal is with "leftist" hipsters today, but the conservatism of Brooklyn bro cliques sucks shit. Fuck Sam Seder and whoever else they are trying to impress with that garbage. If Truanon is going that route, I'm out.

brendo

Sure the CIA helped kill a million people in Indonesia, but now you're telling me they removed my posts?

Kiwl

Lol, imagine riding this hard for Taibbi of all people, and you're subbed to Jimmy Dore, lmao

Jerimiah

Right? I am interested in the Pentagon and CIA stuff. Just not every little piece of garbage.

Evan Scott

i wish Radio War Nerd was free so you could listen to Mark's explanation of what a prissy clout chaser Matt always was lol

YourBabysFather

Did we forget about surveillance valley? This is the logical conclusion of the PTB creating the internet

Lawrence McG

My RSS feed seems to have stopped working for for this podcast? am still paying subs, and I can listen via the Patreon app, but yea - nada via my podcast app

justdave

I totally agree, but also the mind numbing boredom of fascism, the dundun da da dadada and how its pervasive tendrils so easily control EVERYTHING is a good reminder of how things work (even if it's not good to walk around with that shit in your head 😀)

Jason Weiser

Shellenberger isnt actually an md, it’s his initials, and yes he’s a fucking dumbass

Jason Weiser

My dad sent me an interview with him with the Epoch Times on the recent IPCC report with him horribly summarizing the abstract. He definitely spent like 20 minutes skimming it to find 3 quotes about how it actually says everythjngs fine. Man actually read it! It’s your job. Idiot.

Jason Weiser

Pointing out how stupid he is in his replies grants you a block btw lmao

Oliver Crane

He sucks so fucking much. Basically all the Twitter files people are the sort of assholes who aren’t even interesting, it just makes my day worse to be reminded that they exist and people listen to them.

Oliver Crane

I love hanging out in my Brooklyn hipster coffee shop and chatting with all my neoliberal bros about how cool Sam Seder is.

J Flaxman

Brace, Liz: The reason literally nobody gives a literal shit about the twitter files is because literally every single "revelation" was already covered in at least one of the five literally largest media outlets in America prior to the Musk takeover. There was literally nothing new in there. Maybe do some literal research before recording a literally shit episode?

Zach

We need to "Invent new ways of coping with the information environment." This episode pairs well with the first episode of Chapo's Hell on Earth series (out yesterday). They talked about the same problems when the printing press was invented.

TrueAnonPod

The RSS feed is up to date -- maybe try deleting it and re-adding it to your app

Faye

meant to comment this last time this was said but anyone who's ever called themselves a rocker needs someone like Liz to tell them they need to learn how to form an opinion

Zach Denzer

I believe the True Crew live around SF. Hope this helps.

Seth Aronovich

Don't care. People should hate the ammurican empire's secret police. Don't care why they hate them.

Seth Aronovich

Dore is great. Zionist scum like AOC should be criticized.

Seth Aronovich

Having been interviewed by the Falun Gong (CIA) times is rather discrediting.

Graham Hoese

Reporting Brace and Yung Chomsky for impersonating medical doctors. They gave me some very bad advice about bunion home remedies.

Pearl

i love this podcast

Nick

Liz saying “5G coronavirus get the facts” would be a good ringtone

Nate De La Cruz

does anyone have the link to the nature article liz quotes from re: anthropology / coping with increased information? it’s mentioned around the end of the podcast. (great episode as always)

aKg

Way to comment a rant before even listening to the ep. Sort of telling on yourself here with the Jimmy Dore approach of bitching without informing yourself first.

aKg

“Everyone dismissing the Twitter files as nothing is an idiot, however, it does seem pointless” Y’all running out of topics to cover?

Bre Wolff

Pls address the situation w channel 5 so ur paying audience knows where to put their money thanks

AfroCommie

Such a great name :')

SF

You know this episode is good because schizos are going apeshit in the replies. Anyway I enjoyed listening to this while I was out running. Great ep. Keep up the good work Liz, Brace and YC 👍

SF

???

Gulb

Gotta be honest, I think Brace actually likes movies.

Jethro Mojave

OKC bombing ep by April 19 or I unsubscribe

Gulb

The alternative Bari and the right are imagining really is just them being in charge of what speech is allowed.

DRS

😂😂 There’s no doubt they’re running very sophisticated propaganda and psyop campaigns using social media but they’ve been doing that with ALL media for decades. Even video games!!! The Twitter files seem to be about terminally online people pissed off about 7 day Twitter bans.

DRS

The shit used to be called ARPANET for fuck’s sake

Sheep

It's hard to care about the twitter files when it seems like just a bunch of journalists complaining about how oppressed they are and I genuinely do not care about twitter. Nor do I think anyone should, really. I also, as a general rule, hate journalists.

Emma

The part about speech decisions being inherently political was so refreshing to hear, it’s a point that I haven’t seen enough people making!! What I think this whole thing has laid bare is the fact that “libertarians”/“free speech absolutists” don’t actually have a problem with the existence of rules/power, they just want people who share their political views to hold that power

Kristen

Would love to hear what Liz thinks about the new prince Harry book!!

Wiley Michelle B

I guess my question is do we really think it's impossible to say that the government can't censor speech around things like our wars or Lab Leaks? Or that the government doesn't get access on the back end in every department to literally all of our data? Because that doesn't seem so impossible to me. It does feel like we could regulate and have boundaries around that. It feels pretty obvious that politicians like Adam Schiff can't just ride and get journalists he doesn't like removed from Twitter. And it seems scary that they can choose to just do full on narrative shift as opposed to actually removing information that is false. It does seem like there's a difference there. Maybe my expectations are too high... But it seems like our government's behavior in this instance is pretty reprehensible. Specifically, their behavior around lab leaks and Afghanistan and Ukraine and Syria stand out to me as a real threat to even honest discussion about very significant issues for us as a society.

Your Guide AL

Wow, Liz' summarized points on the internet at the end blew me away. Wondering if Liz has spotted any projects or programs which address this question of the circulation of information? Do the visualizations or 'tracings' of information flow even improve our understanding of what is going on?

Mara Frum

Hoping for this too..

Seth Aronovich

A good episode. It's true that a lot of the things that came up were already 'known'- in that Twitter is a tool of the American empire, the most evil political entity ever to exist, and its constituent corporations- but it's always good to have more evidence to punch people in the face with. Max Blumenthal is doing an interview with Taibbi on the matter tomorrow, should be interesting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28vylXZvec4

meyer

what’s the situation with channel 5?

Seth Aronovich

I don't want to live in a society where Bari Weiss can spew her hatred for Palestinians and other humans without retribution.

Pete Bondurant

Don’t it make you wanna rock and rollI All night long heard somebody singin sweet and soulful, on the radio. Mohammad’s radio

Vita Eve

i thought it was al gore

meyer

umm nvm yikes

Thomas Iversen

The phase “Psychic economy” that Liz uses to describe the relationship that our use of the internet has with the “profit logic” of the owners of internet platforms really helps me understand how sites like Twitter became the way they are. Even Twitter didn’t used to be this kind of radically sporadic bombardment of information that the entire internet is today. The older internet was calmer and slower. It was Crazy still but it was not the ridiculous kaleidoscope we have today.

Ben Thelen

Babylon 100 percent one of the worst movies of all time. At least he tells us what he's going to at the beginning: shit on our heads. Liz also right about sunset boulevard, although Mulholland drive another all time great movie about Hollywood. The Player also good.

George P

of course it's bad, people who we oppose politically are in charge of it. moderation of these sites is entirely a political question as Liz said. these type of moderation is inevitable until the left has way more political power. for example, if Sanders had won in 2020 I'd want Twitter to crack down on any groups using Twitter to organize a putsch against him, but I wouldn't want Twitter to crack down on groups trying to organize a socialist revolution against the current US government. that doesn't make me a hypocrite, it makes me someone with socialist politics.

AR

Anyone got any idea what paper Liz was talking abt at the end? Would love to give it a read!

Sawyer Gilding

Calling Babylon a love letter to movies is a good meme

AbeLinkin

Releasing the Kraken, at least in the public’s mind-eye, definitely stems from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies

AbeLinkin

The internet became sad as soon as smartphones and laptops became ubiquitous. Too much internet all the time. We need to implement a “1 computer policy” per household.

Colin Clark

Nah it makes you someone who doesn't believe in democracy. Which is fine, it's a total fucking failure, but it doesn't have much to do with your socialism

punkademic

Love this podcast dearly but this is a snoozefest that Brace & Liz would’ve mocked if other podcasters ran it. Overall, the Files are just cherry-picked info that’s being laundered to the public by a billionaire conman with the worst possible motives, and most of it is just rote confirmation that content moderation is, in fact, a thing that exists in the world. Also, if you’re gonna constantly give shit to journalists, don’t let ideological hacks like Weiss off the hook as if she’s some truthseeker.

SF

When you're such a morbidly obese shut-in that you think "going for a run a few times a week" is a wild lie people come up with lol

SF

??? They say themselves in the ep that these are cherry-picked and that it mostly confirms things we already know--- and at no point do they "let Bari Weiss off the hook" or act as if she's a "truthseeker"

DH

Your politics is nothing more than a little dollhouse where you get to play with your podcaster and journalist dolls.

sadie

Why do you guys always spend soooo long prefacing like omg Just need opener, 5 min of context, and just get into it, the episode doesn't start until 30 min in like come on y'all

John

Yeh there’s loads of them piling on aaron good aswell. Any time i see it i politely ask someone for a specific example of trueanon saying or doing something sus. Never get an answer.

John

I would love to hear that.

John

Half way through and enjoying it so far. Anyone here sub to media roots radio ? Abby and robby seemed far more critical of it. Plus so far i haven’t heard brace or liz mention how bari weiss is a paid israeli lobbyist.

sadie

Some of your worst work unfortunately

Brendan Garcia

Same, but it’s pointless. It’s just received wisdom for them at this point, a tenet of faith that TrueAnon is sus.

Son of El Topo

Babylon was fun, fuck the haters. It's definitely at it's best when it's doing comedic stuff though, the scene where they are trying to film with sound for the first time was hilarious.

Eikeland

I think that they’re focusing on different aspects of the files. Media Roots really focused in on the people who the files are being filtered through and what it means that they’re being released. Which I would have liked to see TA get more into, but they still do a good job breaking down the actual contents.

I am become reply guy

I don’t like movies because 👏PICTURES 👏AREN’T 👏SUPPOSED TO 👏MOVE. Come on people!

K H

Brace's general inability to form an opinion puts his dislike of movies into greater perspective. I think that's one of the 7 signs of autism, which itself is part of the Dark Triad.

K H

Because?

K H

You have autism.

K H

I like having it confirmed that these places are in fact overrun with FBI or CIA agents in addition to being in direct communication for the content that's up. I'm pretty sure CNN is a straight up CIA op top to bottom but I'd like documentation. Moderation being used interchangeably with government demanded censorship is also Orwellian language I won't be adopting. Government censorship is in fact a thing? Big yikes my guy. Cringe amirite. I wish they got info on who the redacted name was that was pushing so hard to ban Trump.

K H

A political question doesn't mean completely opaque and partisan. It does in our dysfunctional hobbling toward oblivion, but in a functional society it's unacceptable.

K H

I like Jimmy Dore. I like to listen to a lot of people that don't care for other people I also listen to. They aren't your friends, you don't have to selectively maintain the group.

hk

Thank you

K H

Wtf are you referring to? Do you eveb know? Can you quote or summarize? Maybe your vibes are just fucked and you're projecting. You have a tummy ache.

K H

Someone got to the commenters first. They are weirdly pissed for no discernible reason. Like this is the first episode that ever confirmed shit people already suspected, or wasn't of enormous gravity. I guess I'm one of the few that didn't "already know" somehow. Good episode in my book.

Zzz

Preach Liz, preach!

John

Yeh true. Plus brace did say it was a limited hangout. Its interesting that robbie martin never goes on other peoples podcasts. I’d love to hear him on trueanon. I’d say abbey has been on true anon before. Or at least they’d b friendly.

K H

The Jews have to control them somehow.

Brydon

He’s been on TA a few times, search his name in their backlog

Owen Webster

Shellenberger isn’t even a doctor he just conveniently uses his first and middle initial MD right after his name because he’s that much of charlatan.

Eikeland

I think he went on Guerilla History to talk about smallpox vaccines in the early 2000s? Didn’t hear the episode but I did see it in their catalog

Michelle

I thought I saw Brace in a photo in Bowen Yang’s IG stories, and I guess it really was him! Well that sounds like a fun as hell time (except for the movie outing).

sadie

Seems like actually you have autism and your special interest is autism

I am become reply guy

I think what they meant is that moderation is a necessity if you want a useable internet and that choosing what to moderate will always be a political choice regardless of who does it, and that any discourse that doesn’t start with an acknowledgment of those facts is necessarily incomplete and even dishonest.

Lizabet

I don't think they say anything for or against Matt Taibi in the ep. They just say how he was one of the people breaking the story--and honestly TrueAnon has always kept itself out of all the weird podcast infighting. That said, sure, not the most gripping episode. They always do better when they do a deep dive in my opinion, this was a more ripped from the headlines one.

Seth Aronovich

It doesn't matter if Weiss is 'paid' or not. She's an open zionist, an open supporter of genocide. She shuold be in a gulag.

S H

This is tranche warfare!

SF

nah it's a decent ep

I am become reply guy

Hunter Biden cannot be forgiven for his cavalier treatment of Brace’s favorite sacrament, crack.

our lady of reclaimed teeth

this is goofy but i study anthro and i'd love to read the article in nature that liz was talking about, has anyone been able to find it? thanks!

Char Kelly

The fact that there wasn’t a TrueAnon/Las Culturista pod giving a Ghislane update during the Miley Cyrus New Years bonanza bash is a travesty. Woulda been a better use of time instead of seeing Babylon

zach miller

My most pressing question is what secret does Liz know about the beaches in LA? there is no reason to get close enough to the Pacific ocean in California to touch it, find a nice cliff or something they're way nicer than any of the beaches.

Blingo Starr

Why the hell is there all this talking on my podcasts!?

Sander Emerick

Way late to this but Liz were you trying to sing “Avalon” by Foxygen?

K H

Liberate us president Xi

AbeLinkin

In what way are they anti-worker? Genuinely curious please don’t unload

AbeLinkin

Say it ain’t so
