I want to point out how important it is that the new monarch is named Charles. Without relying too much on the idea that "nomen fatum est" (name is fate) it's crazy that the current monarch shares his name with two dudes who both dissolved parliament and had insanely bad reigns in times of crisis that led to absolute chaos. Both Charles I & II were self-indulgent, ignorant motherfuckers. The name "Charles" comes from a Germanic term meaning "free man" meaning, free to do whatever the fuck he wants apparently. I wonder if Charles will follow upon his namesakes' legacy by dissolving parliament in an age of political turmoil.... If anyone is interested in a leftist analysis of the English Civil War & the reign of Charles I I highly recommend the book "The World Turned Upside Down" by Christopher Hill, the greatest historian on Early Modern British history (who somehow got a cushy job at Balliol College while being a self-proclaimed Marxist).

Also another thing about England, the Royal Prerogative is kind of a get out clause which allows the monarch to exempt themselves from any legislation and maintain the institution. That royal prerogative existed from the English revolution which as Liz said is unfinished. Christopher Hill is the greatest English Marxist historian of the period and his book ‘Gods Englishman’ about Oliver Cromwell is a great read.

The other thing about the English revolution is the City of London ie the square mile where finance takes place, got its independence from any legal scrutiny because it agreed to finance the parliamentary army against the king. The City of London even has a guy called City Remembrancer who sits in the parliament and tells the MP’s when they are doing anything that affects the City of London. That was consequential because Thatcherism ie neoliberalism came about through corporations which didn’t want any legal scrutiny but that model already existed in Britain which was also one of the worlds financial centres until Brexit happened.
