Following the arrest of mafia boss and murderous gamer Matteo Denaro, we grab Matt from Ghost Stories for the End of the World and take a trip to Sicily for a two-parter on Cosa Nostra, the mafia’s role as handmaiden and parasite, and the early history of the Sicilian Mob.

Pete Seeger

It is the best. The most recent PROMIS series is fantastic

Ian H

Haven't listened to this yet, excited to, but I was wondering if you guys planning on doing a Windecker ep? Crazy story, and it seems to contain a lot of Brace themes (freaks, fed chicanery, Rojava).

Michael S. Judge

It's a Catholic country. We Catholics always work harder for female bosses

original gay pussy eatah

I got ta my little splainer uh stuck in the glory hole at olive garden mama mia !! Oh true anon help a me !!

By the way, La Cosa Nostra can also be transacted as “The thing of ours” which sounds weird in English but makes sense

NYCM&AHole

Oh man the octopus series is mind blowing

Owen Bulger

Brace, Mafia is not an aesthetic. Re-think this.

To literalize the metaphor of "a parasite on the state that replaces some of the function of the state", there's a marine isopod that enters the mouth of a fish and eats its tongue, then attaches itself to the spot where it once was, taking on the role of the tongue and continuing to feed on the fish's blood.

TrueAnonPod

It’s there — try removing the feed from your app and re-adding it?

Don Hutto supplies all of The Gourmand's ziti

matilda

grew up in Rome, one side of the family is all from/in Catania. why are you asking this guy who clearly does not speak italian how to pronounce words that he is butchering lmfao. perché??!! comunque episodio bellissimo, bravi ragazzi 💚❤️🤍

matilda

e.g. Don Ciccio, ciccio means chubby and is pronounced chee-cho, not chee-chee-o.

SephIsLeft

uum no sweaty this has been debunked actually

matilda

can’t help myself last one : pizzini (little messages), pronounced pee-tsee-knee, not puh-zee-knee

Adam

I neeeeeeddd a NEW…. NORMAN FINKLESTEIN EPISODE 😜😜😂🙏🙏🙏

Sheila Mydick

It keeps getting better! Thanks boys

uya

what do I tell my mom about the balloons?

Hunter

Fantastic ep, but I do have to get this off my chest: it would be weird to take off the “la” in “la cosa nostra,” you have to have the la/il/i in front of the thing if it’s possessive. It’s hard to describe why in English (I’m sure there are formal names for the grammatical rules at play here but idk what they are) but it’s not right grammatically and it sounds wrong.

Hunter

You wouldn’t say “my children” are “miei bambini,” it’s “i miei bambini.” It’s not the same thing but it’d be like if someone kept referring to the CIA as “CIA” instead of “the CIA.”

Robbie H.

That makes sense.

Go'Thrak

Getting embarrassed in front of the crawdads is an all timer

TangiePower

I really like the focus of this episode and most reminds me of the Spider network series in terms of being mostly a history ep but with a contemporary news tie-in. Does a good job of connecting the dots.

TrueAnonPod

Someone told me if you go to Italy and say Times Square no one will understand you but if you say TIMMIS SKWARÉ they will

matilda

boh, in my head i do call you Braccio tho

Evan Scott

do you have some level of italian fluency or are you doing duolingo

Roger Peet

Excellent episode, reminded me of the fact that a lot of Somali piracy was related to Italian ships run by the Ndrangheta and Camorra dumping toxics from northern Italian industry in Somalian waters and killing off all the fish

Hunter

Not native but not Duolingo either (though I have used that to learn some stuff), part of my family is calabrian. Can’t speak it worth shit but I can understand what people are saying pretty well and I can read it. It’s not just a formal rule that they’d have on something like Duolingo or Rosetta Stone where they hyperfocus on grammar, it legit would look weird in the wild.

Natalie

i'm assuming because they can pronounce them even less correctly and they wanted someone who specialized in the history that they already are on friendly terms with.

Natalie

liz plowing through the outro made me laugh

Christopher Price

Those Italian immigrants to bayou country were the reason why the mandolin is an American folk instrument. Grazie Italia.

Michelle C

I think you're partially correct, but word order is key. Catalan is the same: I would say "el meu amor" with the article but "amor meu" without it

Jerimiah

My wife got the talker in the back of the Denver show physically removed. It was a drunk guy at the bar who kept saying he worked for United Airlines. He was telling his friend he didn't need to know English to be a pilot. Glad that corporate synergy is working out for the pod. A podcast / job fair is really innovative. Great times.

Zzz

Dumb episode

Alexis

I haven't been able to listen to anything but Ghost Stories since this episode came out. Excellent

loafman

Brace Bellendi

Daniel Graf

You should definitely do a City of London series

Morphinestick

I think you guys should do a series on the formation of the prohibition party in 1869 and it’s eventual formation into what created American prohibition.

alejandro

I was gonna compliment this one but we’ll get into that in the next episode

alejandro

shocked there’s another catalan truanon fan

Romance languages generally use articles a lot more often than we do in English

2026-09-09 19:00 have you guys heard of the Australian youtuber turned journalist / labor activist who exposed the NSW “governor” (forget what the Aussies call them Governoggins?) and the connection between the biggest casino company and organized crime syndicate in NSW? Whose being trageted by the govt and/or organized crime like already got his house firebombed twice. I know you hate youtubers but I think it’s one of those exceptions the same way this is the only anti pedophilic podcast. His channel is friendlyjordies.

Matt is really fucking smart and I am looking forward to the rest of this

Deputy leader and cry baby criminal extratraordinaire John barilaro ... mobbed up as fuck, do crimes in the open ... the press always calls jordies a YouTube comedian but he is hands down one of the bravest journalists in our country

Yeah I was like isn't this how possessives work in Italian unless it's a word for a family member

Porca Madonna! Hey, for some with absolutely neutralized ethnicity, the black Madonna is a very sentimental piece of cultural heritage

There a good doc or piece about this?

Obviously a trite observation, and a whole different part of Italy, but it's hard to hear about the CN-Camorra-’Ndrangheta continuum and not think of all the shit in Dante about the Guelphs and the Ghibellines, the backward but canny Guelph rednecks (who were pro-monarchy as a central government to unite the Italian city-states and slap the Pope when he acted a fool) who beat the city-slicker banker-friendly Ghibbelines (pro-Pope, anti-proto-nationalist) and then immediately split up into White Guelphs and Black Guelphs, so Dante and the Whites went to Pope Boniface VIII and said "Buddy, we don't want an ugly flght, but you don't run Firenze no more," but while they were doing so, Pope Boniface was having the Black Guelphs nearly raze Florence and install what basically amounted to borrowed Catholic gendarmes, so that poor goofy bastard Dante went to Rome to "wait out" the occupation, and he spent the rest of his life couchsurfing among sympathetic aristocrats, waiting till the streets cooled down enough for him to return to Florence, which never happened. He wrote the whole COMMEDIA in other people's living rooms, basically, after "winning" the war. History is not a circle, but it is a rising spiral upon which the same shape is inscribed over and over and gets bigger with every repetition as the spiral opens out into a tornado (in Dante it's two tornadoes, mouth-to-mouth, in which the center is this world, one tornado narrows down to a singular point of infinitely dense light called God, and the other likewise focuses into black diamond of substantial cold and darkness – not the absence of heat and light, but cold and dark as embodied essences – called the Devil)
