Please do an Oppenheimer episode, the man was a ghoul. The stories surrounding this guy are horrifying. Also: you're a loser if you think that Germany was anywhere near achieving nuclear weapons capability at the end of the second world war. The Nazis were not the super intelligent threat that people claim. The idea that the bomb was in any way justified is complete hogwash - if any moral history is ever written of the world, the United States will be considered one of its greatest villains for the act of this bomb's creation alone.

On what basis can you claim it was absurd to think Germany was en route to nuclear capability? They were absolutely trying to develop that tech (with some of the top nerds in the world on their side) but were constrained in part by their inability to generate enough nuclear material -- which only became the facts on the ground once the Nazi military fortunes were already on the decline.

Like, I don't think people are genuinely grappling with the fact that once it was discovered that splitting the atom is possible the nuclear bomb becomes a foregone conclusion. *Some country* is going to succeed in developing it, and having it is bad news for all their enemies. The general vibe in the comments section is "it was pure evil to even work on creating the bomb" and idk, it's certainly not some morally breezy activity, but wtf was the gameplan supposed to be once the atom-splitting genie is out of the bottle? Hope (absurdly, based on the late 1930s context) that Nazi Germany would inevitably fail in developing the bomb? And what if they didn't? Forget the US, what would that mean for the USSR? If there's anyone Hitler would have nuked it's the slavs.

First off, The Manhattan Project starts in 1942. 1943 marks the turning point in the war. Logistically speaking, it is utterly impossible for Germany while fighting a war on two fronts and also losing scientists (to the fact that many were Jewish), to have kept pace with nuclear arms development. Though it is not as attractive a dramatic narrative, the Nazis weren't anywhere close to the development of a nuclear fission reactor let alone weapons capability by the end of the war in 1945. When the US mercilessly slaughtered the civilians of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the war was already over in Europe. The United States had a vested interest in creating nuclear weapons, the excuse that maybe all their friends were doing it too does not erase their culpability.

I agree that by the end of the war there was obviously no atomic threat from Germany, making the decision to drop the bomb on Japan unnecessary (and imo quite evil) -- but see that as very much distinct from the choice of whether or not to develop nuke-making capacity itself
