We put on the balaclavas, chamber a round, and head to the cockpit to talk about the beautiful period in world history where hijacking airplanes was hot. A spiritual successor to our previous airplane episode.

Funny that the hijacking tag does not apply to the 9/11 series

Mara B

Johan grimonprez (Belgian appropriation artist) has a movie on his website free for download called dial history. I’ll recommend it whenever hijacking’s are brought up check it out

Hannah Wacha

If Zuck was serious he would only train via Quest VR boxing games

Jed Levin

Yeah, this is the stuff I saw on the news as a kid.

minnie

paywalling the episodes on airlines and insurance and then dropping the episode on skyjacking for free. trueanon is a pod for the people

cagey eye

yc needs to recreate the minichello arrest fit. for historical purposes

Fiddypea

Anyone else dialling history?

Fiddypea

This guys knows what's up.

Robert Sayre

They did find $5800 of the DB Cooper cash in 1980!

Doc Adna

If it wasn't already the case we are now all officially on blacklists

Mark Owen

Got a Welcome Back Kotter card where Epstein's speech bubble is "Sorry I'm late - my bus got hijacked to Cuba."

GolfBaller

Didn't Cooper ask for multiple parachutes? The feds probably thought he might make the crew jump and take the plane himself, so no faulty parachutes allowed.

Jed Levin

The Germanwings incident scares the hell out of me! I read the Wikipedia entry every once in a while.

Patrick Niepokoj

I literally moaned when I saw this I can’t believe y’all are talking about this I’m so hype

Jaime Christley

When you successfully land the plane it’s not really hijacking

Kevin Wilder

Maaaan... You shoulda been there in '83 at The Warfield. Max Rebo Band ft. Sy Snootles at the height of their powers.

Catherine Hutchinson

Brings it all back - wild, angry times on the tv from my childhood: hijackings everywhere PLO, PLA, Baader-Meinhof.

Vincent

What's the band Brace was yelling about. I don't know them and can't find them

Alex

Okay Liz may have been right about Gen Z needing to get a job. But she was also right about us being stupid about anything pre-9/11 Excited for the future

Brace confusing Idris Elba for Michael K Williams?

Robert Sayre

This name cannot be pronounced correctly, and seems to be a joke. Les Rallizes Dénudés (裸のラリーズ, Hadaka no rariizu)

Luke Harrington

all this talk of pro palestinian airline hijackings and not even one glancing reference to the entebbe raid and my girl Rosamund Pike? tf

Anon Ibid

But did clarence's boss actually sleep with his gf???

Matthew Thrunnowicki

It’s not a “how you attach the stairs” thing. In a 727, the stairs were built in in the back of the plane’s fuselage which opened out so people could exit out the back.

ZeeBee

Point of order: the combat zone was Boston's red light district (where all the porn theaters and sex shops were), but it hasn't really existed since the 90s.

Walker Weinman

If anyone wants to learn more about the PLO hijackings with a little context, here are the paragraphs from The Arabs: A History, by Oxford historian E. Rogan. https://wordpress.com/post/beats-working.com/77 I actually read this part yesterday, proving once again that TrueAnon is always one step ahead. 👁️

em

TrueAnon, you have a hell of a body on you!

Mitch Jones

Crashing a biplane into an insane asylum is the most 1920s-ass thing I've ever heard of.

Jaime Christley

One of the more amusing MAD MEN fan theories is that Ted Chaough goes on to become DB Cooper.

Johan Stefonski

Be nice to Portland! Everyone is mean to us and we're actually pretty nice! Why does everyone want us to be even sadder than we already are?

Jed Levin

My “Mario” voice is a better impersonation of an Italian than Brace’s.

unforgivingbisexual

Hi guys. I hope you will do an episode about Javier Milei? Thanks for making a great show

Demented Avenger

Dressed up like a white-armored stormtrooper Gonna take a jump like D.B. Cooper Super-duper!

Seanm538

Really hoping that Tom from Myspace can be the ref for the Zuck vs Elon fight that will never happen.

Marcus

The first time being dope sick is so confusing. Feeling like you're getting sick and going crazy at the same time, and not knowing to connect it back to opiates.

Brendan Garcia

That happened to me with kratom, which was even more insane.

Brendan Garcia

Obviously the post 9-11 security stuff is bullshit, bud kinda funny that they passed a law against flying with the stairs attached, but waited 30 years to make it harder to bring dynamite on a plane.

Medium Imbecile

Does brace admitting to beating off in the airplane bathroom constitute him as a skyjacker?

Abiham

Mr Belden are you enjoying BG3?

Jaime Christley

Terrorism would be a lot more romantic if those guys were called sky pirates. But no, we can’t have that.

Jaime Christley

In a let’s roll type of situation, if a bunch of hard guys were coming at him, he would use his mastery of skyjacking to beat them all off at the same time. An example for us all.

Mark Owen

or Chadwick Boseman?

Shfifty_five

Somebody pill me on the PFLP

Dylan Reader

begging for a freak beat ep on the diaped up astronaut’s wild ride to florida

When I was a little kid my dad would take me to his AA meetings and there was an older guy named Elmo, who told a story about going to jail after he got blackout drunk and nearly killed a guy.

georgia

you’re not lying, that raffaele man is HAND SOME

AbsenteeUncle

Brace and Ben the Bane Davis is the chaotic mma crossover I need.

Jack

DB Cooper is a great example of how everyone online tries to credit their subculture with anything cool that happens. Last year I was reading my ultra running magazine and there was an article about how actually DB Cooper survived the jump and climb thru the mountains bc he was an ultra marathoner https://ultrarunning.com/featured/run-d-b-cooper/

Karl Childers

what if i told you both genres are just different branding on the exact same ubiquitous culture of conformity that no one in the 21st century can escape

Demented Avenger

I’d accept that; hell, that was pretty much my thoughts in 1986. I just hate the elitism of punk fans and love to tweak them.

Doug Cartel

that's why you gotta get on the Unhinged dating app

Doug Cartel

Portland just sounds like a tiny England, maybe that's why it sucks? I've heard it was just a sea-crime hellhole before the hipsters showed up, idk ONEMORETHING lmao there was some movie about a war vet and his dog and weed farms were a part of the plot line. Maybe it's some kind of MKULTRA bullshit, nodding to all the weed farm mercs

yungneilyoung

Listening to this episode while my coworkers fight in the office. Trying not to laugh about the Whoopie defense.

Zzz

Leila Khalid FTW

gardenwallflower

Brace is so (un)relatable when he refers to one of the most obscure Japanese psychedelic rock bands ever as “that band that all of my friends were obsessed with in 2008”

gardenwallflower

and apparently Les Rallizes Denudes, which Brace confusingly incorrectly spelled out as “R-A-Z-I-L” ..

brian simpson

Check out the Carlos the Jackal film/mini series.

Brian Ward

Some great accent work in this episode

florabelle

I'm so glad to hear that Brace is expecting! Will baby also do accents??

JV

thought i read that they did eventually find some of the d.b. cooper cash washed up on a riverbank in a national park or something?

jay

Elmo is cool, but Grover is much cooler. If you go to Maine people are still being named this type of shit—Respect

fried egg

if you wanna watch a movie with crazy ass australian accents watch wake in fright

SoldierBlue

As Matt Christman said, a movie about waking into a nightmare, the nightmare being being surrounded by Australians

Jaime Christley

I thought the Whoopie Defense was what Dan White tried to use after he murdered Harvey Milk and George Moscone. Also I do not think of Elmo without also thinking of this https://youtu.be/z8_VBIHNdcA

Christopher Price

Not exactly. Before Vegas Portland was the sin city of the West Coast. There wasn't much sea crime because the geography is no good for smuggling (Tacoma on the other hand....). But if you were a sailor looking to get crazy with a lumberjack that was the place to be. Eventually the city tried to sober up and got very suburban, but then we discovered heroin. Brace and Liz aren't allowed to talk shit about the city because we have whole neighborhoods that are refugee camps for Bay Area natives.

Vita Eve

that crazy sexy italian brought me to tears

Robert Ditty

I was thinking about this skyjacking subject recently after rewatching the Carlos the Jackal biopic from 2010 (Awesome movie btw, get the full 5 hour+ version if you haven’t seen it). It was SO EASY to highjack an airplane in the 70s. And look cool as hell while doing it with an AK-47, wide lapel leather jacket, flared pants, big women’s sunglasses if you were a man, big man’s sunglasses if you were a woman, and a cigarette dangling from your mouth. European nations would just give you the ransom no problem, you could fly to the Middle East and then live in exile in Bulgaria or some other Eastern Bloc country. I wish I lived in the 70s. Gorbachev ruined everything. Anyway, I love Brace, Liz, and Young Chomsky but I do have one minor correction to this episode: In regards to DB Cooper, Liz said that the ransom money was never found but that’s not true! In 1980, two bundles of the money were found by a kid digging on the shore of the Columbia. It’s a pretty interesting detail: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D._B._Cooper#Recovered_ransom_money I grew up on the Washington side of the Portland Metro area (near where DB supposedly parachuted) so I have been interested in the case. I’ve lived in Portland proper for years now, and although I was offended by what Brace and Liz said about my beloved hometown, I forgive them. Whenever someone talks shit about Portland, I just hope it will discourage more people from moving here. The rent is too damn high. Thanks for attending my TED Talk.

Maura Willey

living in a group home in the dprk with other plane jackers doesn't seem like the worst thing in the world idk

chee rabbits

Brace also talked about the band “Neu!”. i think the song Hallogallo is playing in the background while that is happening

PB Slueze

Didn't Cooper ask for 4 parachutes to get them to think that he was going to take one of the crew with him when he jumped in order to prevent them from sabotaging the chutes?

Nathaniel Weiner

Italian Vietnam Vet rendition was very powerful

PineBat Jo

My favorite DB copper theory is that he was a trans woman who stole the money for surgery and that’s why no one can find him
