We welcome back fan favorites Robert Skvarla and Matt from Ghost Stories for the End of the World to talk about the TV series True Detective — what does it get right and wrong about conspiracy theory? Why does this series resonate so much with the independent research community? Why did Vince Vaughn talk like that? We talk Yellow King, Vinci, Pentecostal ritual sex abuse, meth addicts, Austin Guys, Night Country, and more.

Yoooooo hell yes best possible guests for this!!!

Ryan Fox

Matthew Mcconaughslay

Matt D

Just finished season 1 last night! But I want to watch season 3 so I don’t know if I should watch this or it will spoil the rest of the series

absoluteboi

just trying to find a thick short stack

C. J

Night Country's writing has been pretty lame but the final moments of episode 4 and 5 have been highlights. Hopefully they don't butcher the finale.

NYCM&AHole

Leeeetssss fuckinnnn goooooooooo ::rust pulls on a laced cigarette::

C. J

Season 1 is for sure the high-point for TD, but season 2 is quite underrated IMO. Season 3 is a return to form, but doesn't quite reach season 1's peak!

NYCM&AHole

Hells yeah shouts out to red riding

Sarah

Yay!!

Blank

For god’s sake someone tell that AI “show don’t tell”

Blank

Also praying that Brace shouts CARCOSA at some point in the ep

Katherine Moss

Oh no. I’ve heard this season is maybe good. I haven’t watched yet though. Are there spoilers? Man. I have to watch this stupid show first. I guess that’s my Monday morning.

glenn mohre

Getting some talk back, first heard 14:30-15:00

Spencer

Liz with the Owen Wilson royal tenenbaums reference, love to see it!

Mugiwara

same, the rare show where i dont want spoilers :)

Kurt Menke

Night Country was definitely inspired by Fortitude. It is basically the same setting, same vibe and a very similar story.

Jared Sarnie

I use to pray for times like this

will michel

haven’t listened to the ep yet but season 2 actually being great is a hill i have died on a thousand times and i will die on a thousand more

E

Fucking hell yeah

Hemlock

Brace's Rust Cohle is a spot on Chuck Tingle

Jed Levin

If I haven’t watched the show is this ep going to make sense to me?

Simon

How does no one punch brace ? Like a friendly dig to communicate 🐶 or just a nip to the ear or cheek. An unacceptable human being 😀😀

Nigel Redd

this seems very ‘she’s holding a plate of corn’ coded if ykwim

Elliot robinson

it’s excellent. a big jump-the-shark moment in the middle of the season that sours it slightly in my opinion but overall quite good

Karl Childers

The King In Yellow is a great read fwiw. like a turn-of-the-century X-Files anthology, it rules

Jack Rockwood

To me the character “Reggie Ledoux” and the outlines of the conspiracy in s1 is obviously inspired by Dutroux

Matt Pierce

True Detective Season 2 truthers rise up!

brodie

Colin Farrell is fucking awesome in season two. Like he is so fucking insane.

ploob

Uh Marty's wife fucks Rust, very important context + Love for season 2! wooh

Ira Lewy

Couldn’t disagree more about their analysis of season 4

Jacob

Great! Now I have to watch this whole stupid show before I can watch this episode.

jrab

Loved Michelle Monaghan in The Path

jrab

Apropos of nothing except for being a review, I have to recommend The Zone of Interest, the creepiest most quietly unsettling movie about the mundane surface of genocide that you will ever see

Brendan Kneeland

I have only seen a couple episodes of S4 but I’m still really enjoying this conversation. SVU type shows/subject matter often disturbs me too much to actually watch so I actually enjoy hearing about the contours of the plot in a wider cultural/political context. 💜

Lucy

The lesbians rock with true anon!!

Galen

Rust Cohle Brace, voiced by Bobby Hill.

Tom

It is not

Horseloverfat

*drinking my 4th beer at noon* thiss episode is like somebody’s faded memory of of a podcas

Nic Bodiford

Kinda think the ghosts and hallucinations in S4 are just caused by the toxic water

kwrob

The performances and production are really good and/or fun--you could probably listen to this episode and hear everything they say about the plot and still enjoy the show afterward

drizzly_november

Until today I thought Michelle Monaghan was the actress Tom Brady knocked up and abandoned, and always hated him so much for treating her like that. Just looked it up and apparently that was Bridget Moynihan? Fuck him anyways.

Stefan

I'm also a Season 2 defender!!

R.Georgy

0:57 Brace thought it was speaking to him.

Jaime Christley

Thomas Ligotti is a fantastic writer - he's written like a dozen or so of the most disorienting, disquieting horror stories I've ever read; he doesn't go for cheap shocks and gore.... instead, when he's at his best (which is often), his writing makes you feel like there's something wrong with YOU, with the air, with the tree outside your window. That there are things hiding behind the stars in the sky that are raining down upon you - and only you - pure hatred. He's a far out dude. I came across his work with the now long OOP paperback of NIGHTMARE FACTORY (not the graphic novel - I haven't read it and don't think I will) that's a mammoth compilation of his short stories, from his earliest stuff up through, I think, 1996. These were all split into a couple of slightly smaller collections, which can be found pretty easily via the usual sites, at normal prices. If you pick up SONGS OF A DEAD DREAMER AND GRIMSCRIBE, which Penguin put out in 2015, and TEATRO GROTTESCO, which a different press put out a few years before that, you'll get the choicest cuts. I haven't read CONSPIRACY AGAINST THE HUMAN RACE so the links between Ligotti and TRUE DETECTIVE still feel really, really tenuous to me. But I did also read his 2009 short novel MY WORK IS NOT YET DONE, which I'll go ahead and say is....... not my favorite.

Kevin Weiss

Great ep. The Conspiracy Against the Human Race is a great, depressing read that weighs heavily on Rust’s uhh…outlook

Davis G

The only thing I love more than a bad contrarian take is a bad contrarian take delivered with a Yorkshire accent.

Jaime Christley

He’s got a great show. Plus there are enough episodes that aren’t behind the paywall to give a prospective listener a sense of what they’d be signing up for. Highly recommended!

bmun

Wondering if Brace has read the Pepe Carvalho books or if those are too modern for him. I think they're pretty damn good.

T

Speaking of California politics and real estate, I’m wondering if anyone has heard of Eugene Friend? He was a Bay Area real estate tycoon who controlled SF city politics, but I can find nothing on him whatsoever.

Jaime Christley

When I watched Season 2, and they go into the vanished Caspere's fuck mansion, the first thing I thought was, if this had been set in 2024, all of his sex artwork would be blowups from NSFW AI image generators, complete with all manner of horrifying disfigurements, sixth fingers, disappearing appendages, third legs, disembodied arms, everything.

Shiv

totally forgot! i was so annoyed after TD4e5 last night i put on TD1e1 (but i was kinda high). it slapped but also seems structured more like a play and less like “prestige TV” than I remembered

Alex De Nicolo

Extremely appreciate the Zebulon hipster call out. My friend calls those kind of guys "Cosmic Cowboys"

Brendan Garcia

I feel like the qanon shit was brought up as just preemptive defense of and marketing for the new season, as a way of saying “the people who will criticize this new, female led show, are qanon people.”

Marcus

Shout out to everyone who stopped watching a show in the middle because of a relapse. We're going to finish those series one day comrades.

Chris

It is really, really bad. But like maybe, so bad it’s kinda worth watching to even believe it was actually made.

buttface

true detective isn't even a good show lol

Katherine Moss

Isn’t everything really bad? I haven’t watched a tv show in a while. Seems like everything sucks. No?

Monica

Could we possibly get a fiction book rec list one day? As a fellow bad sleeper I always need more and I’m intrigued when one gets mentioned.

tuztooz

I get the sense that Season 4 is trying to make a (very lazy) nod towards the very real issue of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. I'm not sure how much traction this issue has gotten in the States, but it's a big deal in Canada. Not a conspiracy per se, because these instances of women going missing/being murdered are often very public and the indifference of the government and failure of the authorities to look into them are just as well-known. Tying this issue in with environmental injustice, resource extraction, and the government conspiracy that is colonialism could have been really compelling and nuanced. But instead of delving into these issues in a fulsome way, we get a clunky parody of Land Back ("We Were Here Before," whoever came up with that has never chanted anything out loud), some spray paint, and mentally ill Indigenous women with no backstory. I'm still waiting for them to bring it all together, but Episode 5 makes me think they aren't going to get there.

T

Some people call them space cowboys

CC

I think that’s a big part of the season. Lost in days of night where time becomes less important and people become more paranoid

Sheep

This isnt at all related but a tv show about two alaska lesbians in like some isolated as fuck town maybe in the 70's trying to solve a series of insane murders would be a great show. Maybe it ends with the suggestion of not a person but a wendigo type monster idk

Lcfitz

This was def one of my favorite episodes please do more!!! I’m gonna go watch season two now. Though I’ll admit I like the 4th season

Michael S. Judge

Major cop-out in S3 that the whole town is built around a giant food-processing plant that's clearly Tyson Foods, which owns a huge chunk of Arkansas, and which was the Clintons' first major corporate backer (Bill and Don Tyson did a lot of coke together & possibly moved weight too). If you've spent any time at all in Arkansas, it's impossible to miss the allusion to Tyson company towns.

Kamran Husain

brace never talk shit on guinness again or we will have a problem

Shiv

pitching HBO the show about Brace hitting the Zendaya button

triplevalaska

Listening to the episode in northern alaska, but they are right not the best season

Hot Rod

Would Peter Dale Scott’s concept of the Deep Event be equivalent to Žižek’s Sublime Object?

lolwuthappend

Intellectualizing the un-intellectualizable changes the listener forever 😵‍💫

ResilientBastard

Fun fact: Hot Topic is headquartered in City of Industry

ResilientBastard

Re: S4 worth watching this flick that Kali Reis was in called Catch the Fair One — addict boxer slashes up a rural native sex trafficking ring

Matt Jolo

That Chat GPT intro was ass, but could I do better in 3 and a half seconds? Probably not.

Caleb Ransom

Ghost Stories FTEOTW, or GSFTEOTW for short, is a quality show. The back catalogue alone is worth the Patreon sub. I am not Matt in disguise.

Begginstrip

Love you and am compelled to provide some feedback. I live in Alaska. Season 4 was produced by Alaska Native women and had an Iñupiaq Advisory Council. I was expecting y’all to discuss more of those spiritual and cultural aspects of the season but i guess not. Would you ever touch on that? Seems like an obvious aspect to the making of the season and I’m curious about your critique.

Sarah

would love an episode like this about Twin Peaks

Isaac Twyford

What I want to bloody know is who taught liz the British practice of crushing cans of G+T on the train. Was there some sort of trueanon croydon excursion episod that I missed?

Sean Carton

Im not trying to be a scold here, but what’s with this attitude that True Detective came out and aired in the distant past? Liz literally says “in the decades since true detective” but IT PREMIERED 10 years ago! There’s such a weird compression/expansion effect that the internet has on our recent cultural history. Like, ask someone who’s literally five years older than you before you start discussing these things as historiography!

Sardonic

As an Austin resident I wish there were more interesting 'guys' out here. Really it's a bunch of neoliberal NIMBYs these days.

Hal Warren

Liz "We Can Get Into That" Franzcak

NYCM&AHole

I want to hear zizek say sublime object on repeat.

Christopher Price

no joke, "not giving you the answers, but unraveling the questions" is a good description of trueanon.

Christopher Price

there's so much potential in the current season but it has all of half of the episodes of the other seasons. it's been a consistent pattern over the Zaslav years that HBO/Max has been greenlighting ambitious projects but then giving them zero room to breathe. Lopez has her merits, so the shit has to be emitting from zaslav's house.

Rene

Season 2 is so fucking bad. We all have our own true detective season 2s though that we'll defend

c8ln

It’s honestly fine

DaFunkBackToDaPunk

It’s pretty purposeful. I personally love it. Feels more disorienting and isolated.

Joe

Bruh she said decade singular it's not that deep.

Aurelie

season 2 acknowledgement is so brave. Such a good point about it needing to be watched at once. When it came out I couldn’t follow it or look at Vánces face. But now I’m excited to revisit

Aurelie

Also would like Vince Vaughn better if he went by Vaughnce

Everett

So far I’ve gotten through only 2.5 episodes of Season 4 but I think the issue of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women is the perfect issue to base this story around. Even if it doesn’t develop beyond simply the background to the greater mystery. I think thats appropriate because it is this maddening fact of life, especially in Canada and northern communities, that everyone is aware of but those who have power in those communities refuse to address.

Alex Gullen

Wow, what an intro from ‘Loss Prevention Liz’’! Less so from the ‘Leper’.

Savage Dawn

Watching true detective season 1 and learning about Bill Clintons past definitely broke my conspiracy egg.

Joe

am I the only one who likes this season and didn't even realize people didn't until this week?

Me

Any chance of getting a Brace Belden classic detective novel summer reading list?

Nick

Swirlieable voice on this guy

Hot Rod

No.🤷‍♂️

JV

"we don't do TV episodes" I remember the Sarah Squirm one about whatever the hell that reality show was

c8ln

Skvarla is great why would you say this?

Char Kelly

TrueAnon is ROCKIN’ with lesbian! LFG

fasd asdfa

Ok season 4 is not nearly as good as the previous 3 seasons, but I wouldn't say its bad.

original gay pussy eatah

The gang went to the very edge of sanity to get a True Detective pun for an episode title, broken by their previous failures with the Utah episodes

kevin

Yeah I mean I think they said it best while talking about how this wasn’t originally supposed to be TD. Should’ve just let Issa do a spooky show about mmiw in Alaska

Willie

British people traditionally are usually pretty good at southern accents. Can’t remember the whole history there but it’s a thing

Alejo

It’s pretty decent

Reece Coren

robert has the best account on twitter! so cool to hear his voice!!

Knosnothing

Liz really on that psychoanalysis beat these days.

Karlach

It’s pretty bad

Norbur

Zebulon hipster is a nice term I didn't know about

Norbur

Isn't it literally winter in Alaska?

Norbur

I call them dad

Brian

I agree and season 2 is horrible. I've tried 3 different times to get through it and I end up stopping and starting something else. It's mediocre acting, story is meh. It has some decent moments and then immediately goes back to being cheesy and overacted

Brian

Saying season 2 and Vince Vaughn is the best character in it is the funniest thing I've heard in awhile.

Brian

I've watched to episode 4 so far and it does go further into it.

Brian

It's a hipster opinion

Everett

Yea I watched ep 5 last night Im actually really liking how that plot point is developing

Brian

It's a waste of time, unless you want to try and be a hipster to your friends about the season

Brian

It's good, just not similar to the past seasons

Brian

Just skip season 2 and watch season 3

Brian

Hipster opinion

Go'Thrak

Brace can pitch Rush Hour but where is the meth movie?????

Cheddar Goblin

"season 4 is not giving hbo, it's giving netflix." I think that perfectly sums up this newest season

Alexander Smith

Can you do a toxicology for LSD? also, Jodi Foster is the only reason I started watching any of these seasons... Can't believe Clarice retired up to Alaska...

Corey Reynolds

“I can see your soul around the edges of your eyes. It’s corrosive. Like acid. And I don’t like your face. It makes me what to do things to it.”- best lines of the show.

c

wow, that was aggressive contempt. haven’t heard you two care about anything more than true detective season 4. the “lesbian” comments were weird though. evangeline is gay, but she’s fucking a guy. (it’s alaska?) there’s are other gay characters. could you just not watch because you hated it so much on sight? i haven’t found it to be *that* bad.

Samwell Ganges

It's very odd to do so and rarely yields positives anyways.

Samwell Ganges

Playing Xbox with British people and I baffle them being able to switch into what they describe as "head injury mode" at a whim. Which I find very funny coming from those God damned Protestant islanders

Samwell Ganges

Okay I didn't know the OG writers didn't have a hand in this. I knew that Season 1 was a joint effort between Cary Joji Fukunaga directing and Nic Pizzolatto writing. The funk in S2/3 is because Nic can write but didn't have that other half imo. This season sounds terrible, I won't be watching, and seems like an excuse to nix more programming off the platform.

Samwell Ganges

Go steal Disco Elysium and play as Dick Mullen

Samwell Ganges

I can't help but wonder if this isn't just them trying to botch the series having any proper followup after they had the audacity to mention the Franklin Scandal in season 3

Samwell Ganges

Westworld season 2 being lumped in with the horrific 3 and 4 makes me sad because it really had some of that magic for like 60% of its runtime. Idk that show made so many people mad but I just put anything after 2 out of my head.

Norbur

This is wack. True detective season 4 is good, flat out. It's weird and embarrassing to try to make it not.

Ryan Johnson

Season 2 is really good, although I am biased since I'm from L.A., and a ton of great noir has taken place there.

Ian :3

It’s a killer Semetary sample

Ian :3

I too would love to hear the meth movie pitch

Ian :3

I saw someone say “girl you and your freud” once and I think of it often

Ian :3

Sleeper hit with this one

Ian :3

The infamous Necromicon…

Ian :3

I’m disappointed by how weak it feels so far

Paul O'Neill

Just want to check in on this after that disaster of a finale

Norbur

Haha, right i made a public comment lol. My personal take is the finale was forgettable and chaotic, but that doesn't negate the novelty of the concept or truly beautiful execution. The creeping detectives in a world of literally endless night is fucking cool and good. Jodie foster's head on a lithe lingerie body and Navarro with her pierced dimples and ugly charisma? These scenes are so flipping weird and unnerving. In past seasons, Rust with his cynical wit, quarterback face and scoliliatic slump (don't think it's scoliosis but McConaughey has a spine thingy) was a character similarly ugly and appealling. Iunno this season has it's weakness, it's not a freak fest like _Amarcord_ or even as eerie as corner life in Sandtown-Winchester a la_the wire_, but it's not a world I knew before, and it's really interesting and worth investigating.

Jennifer Hammerhead

"I was raised to stare blankly at walls" caused me to spit my God damn coffee out all over my work van. Thanks Brace face.

bruce

I feel like ive been wearing a diaper my whole life. Now that the diaper's off, im just shitting in my pants

Christian Bendillo

“I was just a regular type dude… with a big ass dick” - Lyndon Baines Johnson

Mitch Laird

What episode does Brace talk about his pizzagate theory?

Brynt Carson

Dang, I loved season 4. I must be simple af.

ploob

ShowTime vibes

Cheddar Goblin

that def works too. perhaps better. good call

Lettuce Jones

I guess I'll have to give season 2 another chance because I remember it being terrible and incredibly boring. I rank the seasons 1, 3, 4, 2.

Wizard of Choice

2 holds up and has one of the best shootout scenes ever made. I am alone in this opinion. I stopped watching season 4 after the garbae CGI elk in the opening scene. What a disaster.

Frankie

The shootout single shot scene in season one is so bitchin

christian

responding to this old ass comment to say that night country is possibly one of the worst things i've ever seen.
