23andMe becomes a penny stock and we talk healthcare, direct to consumer, and the worthlessness of knowing you’re 30% Estonian.

Thanks to my parents for doing 23andMe so my genetics are easily requested by law enforcement

The gang-stalking started after I submitted mine. They’ve been helping me out so I actually don’t mind. As a black Westerner, it was cool to see where in Africa my ancestors came from. There was no way of knowing without it. Praise Jah and Haile Selassie, my oldest female ancestor was the Queen of Sheba!

Tom Clarke

We did it, for fun. The results were uninteresting and I forgot all about it until I heard about the data breach. I want to be on a class action lawsuit now please.

Jawn Feddermang

That was a crazy twist where brace finds out HE’s 100% Polish.

Michael S. Judge

I'm technically not Yakubian – my ancestors were hairless, dog-fucking cave apes created in a laboratory, but it happened in like 1950

K H

Liz having a British child accent arc makes a lot of sense to me. Funny how then and now the wheel of suffering spins about the banana. Shame keeps returning to it. A cursed fruit for a cursed time.

Karl Childers

this tailpipe banana thing is some mandela effect shit. am i crazy or is it supposed to be a potato?

emma

i took one hoping i wasn’t actually irish but unfortunately my family wasn’t lying

acid burn

i’ve been saying this about the fake flowers !!!!! hate

I do want to know my DNA stats...but I also want to keep my options open for doing crime, and also for being racist.

Claire Simon

my ex who is half arab took a 23andme test that told her she was 100% european and now she's a neo nazi, i wish i was joking or exaggerating

Peanut Horse

Omg a vision pro episode would be so funny. Loved when Truanon entered the meta verse a few years ago

ploob

Ooh, suspicious

Erik Graham

The fact that I’m basically in a commercial genetics database without my consent suck

No do

Honestly would love a Mr Beast ep of the pod, idk what would be uncovered but there’s gotta be something

When I was going to high school in Toronto, after 9th grade guys would go away for the summer sounding normal and then comeback next semester suddenly sounding like a cast member on the sopranos.

Carine

Years ago, my Palestinian dad took a test from some random company and ended up being like 30% Jewish. Turns out it was an Israeli company that made it (he was tempted to show up at Ben Gurion with the results)

Michael S. Judge

Given recent events, you guys can 100% get Dolezal, and I want to HEAR that

K H

Tbh Casey Neistat/nicehat reminds me a lot of Brace if he gave allegiance to the machines and also was a clout demon and a bit of a pussy. I don't actually know anything about Casey, I'm sure he's probably fine and not in the Blackbook or hidden flight logs. If he hit the vape he'd probably be cool. Oh my god. This is Ghost in the Shell content. Ok. So with the new headsets and enhanced pass through, a guy could watch himself getting fucked from the womans perspective and also a lil corner screen of what the dildo tip cam is seeing. In Ghost in the Shell(tv show) a serial killer was skinning women but splicing into their optical feed so their perspectives were swapped. I don't know what this had to do with the 23&Me company.

TrueAnonPod

just fyi we recorded this hours prior to Dolezal being fired for having an onlyfans...crazy...

Karl Childers

revisionism. we all know the original trope belongs to the era of black and white striped convicts fleeing a theft of whiskey tins or general sundries, thwarting a red faced whistle blowing policeman as he fails to crank-start his model T

Fuck the haters Liz, you speak in a lovely manner. 🫡

I like the idea of measuring products relative to Instapot. The instapot coefficient. ALSO everyone I have talked to that PREFERS fake grass outside to real grass was revealed to be an android after further questioning. I assume that is a perfect overlap with fake flower outdoor decour posers and people that watch the Superbowl for ads. This episode was good. Didn't feel the need to strap-on my tactical gear out of existential despair nor so happy I needed to cause a ruckus at my local grocer where I am banned. I will be sleuthing for tips.

Carine

How many of these start ups have a similar incentive structure as PE? Short term payments to yourself and who cares if it goes bust? Sell to some suck after rounds and rounds of useless financing and move on to the next scheme?

Carine

Also oops guess my Dad is a IOF snitch now

The Children of Jack Acid

As I found out post-protest in 2019, the cops will actually take your DNA when they arrest you (at least in West Hollywood, they do). So you're damned if you do, damned if you don't! You might as well find out if you're secretly a bastard.

Violetvds

I wanted to find out what type of African I was n I found out I was 20% European n I was sick

The Children of Jack Acid

I think Israeli scientists got really excited at first when DNA stuff got big, because they thought it would prove that Palestinians all came from somewhere else at some point in the CEs, after Israel and Judah and Judaism had already been a thing. But it turns out Palestinians all have DNA from ancient Canaanites from over 3700 years ago. Like, Palestinians have been in Palestine since the Copper Age: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Origin_of_the_Palestinians Now I think the Israelis are going to spin it in a different way. Because a lot of Jews ALSO have ancient Canaanited DNA. So I think it's going to be "Look, a LOT of people in the Levant have similar DNA! So let us have Israel and you all should go to Jordan and Lebanon and stuff."

laur

i think james charles got a bbl

23andMe ruined my dad’s impression that we were more than 50% Irish which is a tragedy. It also revealed that he’s like 15% Ashkenazi Jewish which explains why my grandmother used to call him “the Rabbi”

Dr. No No No

Neistat’s brother Van has some weirdo takes and videos. Something going on with those two, aging hipster type

Houthi & the Blowfish

I had a job that required a fingerprint scanner to punch-in. You could not opt out, so they're basically forcing you under threat of job loss. And in the policy language of this "agreement", they can use your biometric data in perpetuity and there's nothing you can do about it. The future sucks.

Major Pisano

I honestly love Liz’s voice.. I started listening to TA for the voice cadence of Brace and Liz and the banter that reminded me of the Bay Area SF vibes. Stayed for the fun , Liz’s voice , Brace, and YC the colonel of synth. They makes my bad day better. Or if I’m having too good of a day , I can hear some shit that throws a dark cloud of funk , to bring me back to that American bipolar hum of emotions. Thanks team

Jonathan Flowers

Cherokee princess thing is big down in the south, my dad is from georgia and never knew his dad and the people around his family told him his dad was half native and his aryan ass believed it until mid life.

Vincent

*Liz voice*: "I used to talk in a British accent" *Liz voice not a minute later*: "I talk how I talk, I've always talked how I talk and this is how I talk" WHICH IS IT?!?!?

brodie

You guys should get Dr yakub on the show for the race faker episode

I know an adult woman that said she used to be racist because she’s a Libra Rising

Gordon Schmidt

Funnily enough my father just found out his real dad was some guy he'd never met through 23 and Me

Alex

According to a dna test Liz is 100% that bitch

Neil McKay

I know a woman who had a Indian nanny and her kids developed Indian accents 🙂

Claire Simon

I wanna know why she abandoned spokane....they need her

Brian Ward

I was taking a drink when brace described the Google glass sex event and now I have water in my nose

c

in 2019 i got my BRCA gene tested (dad has the mutation) and i remember feeling like there were an annoying number of steps required to just get the stupid test. now it makes sense

M

Y’all missed a big recent scandal where genetic data was stolen en masse from 23andMe and sold online as an ‘Ashkenazi and Chinese dataset.’ 23andMe lied about the scope of the breach and then changed their terms of service to make it harder to sue them

Zzz

Lmao that’s actually kinda funny

Zzz

I have a very specific accent that includes all accents

amber

Same! Every woman in my family has now tested positive for brca1 (my mother was 30 when she was diagnosed stage 3) including myself. Even still, it took months of required “genetic counseling”, etc for my insurance to cover it.

Alexandros

Came here to say this. There are also multiple class action lawsuits against 23andme. This is the main reason their stock has hone downhill so fast during the last few months.

Wes Rich

It doesn’t really surprise me that at home WebMD diagnosis are becoming more common when the leading cause of debt in the US is medical bills. I’m not insured and I’m terrified of getting sick.

ResilientBastard

Paris proper is an almost wholly bourgeois city, so one can assume the flower and scooter politics, however much I agree with them, are good for property holders

Alexandros

And they blatantly lied both about the way the data was stolen and about the scope (at least initially). Their API had loopholes that could be exploited and people knew about it long before the leaked data became public in the hacker forums.

Oliver Crane

Regarding when bitch fell off, there’s actually some info on the back of my shirt

cori

fully here for the casey niestat slander

triplevalaska

I never thought the Elizabeth Warren native thing was a big deal. I'm a white guy who is small bit indain, get the free Healthcare, but a third of white people claiming to say they're indain, and their always Cherokee. We gonna throw them in jail too it would be quite the list. Being indain is more of vibe thing anyway. Unless there is casino then its a money thing

SoldierBlue

My brother got tested because he wanted to prove our Jewish heritage. He thought it would make people think he was smart, but it came up negative.

J T

people misusing the word “aesthetic” is also a huge pet peeve of mine - but from a pretentious art school angle

BeanCurd

If you do an episode about race-fakers and only have Adam Friedland as a guest I am canceling my subscription lol

Petrorenminbi

Wonka has been 100% British the whole time no way roald dahl is writing a book that takes place outside England

D

I don't know who is worse, the person at the cocktail party who brings up their 23andme ancestry report or the person who mentions every fourth podcast that they lived in England as a child.

notme

I'm going to be real, this episode had some really bad takes. Which is rare for True Anon. 23andMe can be useful, and you don't even need to pay for their premium services. If you simply want your snippet raw data you can take it upload it to an open source database and get real studies and actionable information about your raw data. Of course, genetics are not the end all be all. There are a ton of cellular physicis at play we don't understand. However, there are markers available via these tests that might help or encourage someone to change their lifestyle. For instance, I changed the way I eat because my genetic propensity to get diabetes, sure I could look at my grandparents and know this, but for some people seeing it on paper is motivating. And yes, your snippet data CAN give you accurate insight into your risk of diabetes, it isn't just bullshit. I'm not saying use 23andme either. There are better European companies actually protect your data. These companies are not just pop science they can be useful if the user is adequately educated and 23andMe does make you go through disclosures so that you know ApoB markers and BRCA markers aren't the end all be all. Anyways, it is a for profit company at the end of the day, but unfortunately we're stuck with that model for now. I guess I'm a snitch 🫠

notme

Real haters in the comments here

Alexander Johnson

Still listening to the episode, but I want to bring up that I appreciated 23andme as a sperm bank baby. My sister & I basically had no real idea about half of our genetics due to being from a sperm bank. Interestingly, my mom believed the sperm was from a "Norwegian-American" (because my dad was Norwegian) based on the bank, but we ended up being mostly Danish on my father's side, which felt like a betrayal. What's interesting is that I have >30 half-siblings on 23andme alone due to being a sperm bank baby, so presumably my half-siblings are probably in the 100s, which was pretty wild to realize. Some of my half-siblings even reached out and planned to have a meet-up with all of the children of this unknown Danish sperm donor, but that was in early 2020 so the plans fell through due to Covid. Anyway, it was nice to hear from some of my half-siblings through 23andme so I'll appreciate it for that. Shout out to my sperm bank half-sibs.

dan

i love paying these companies to steal the genetic data of all of my relatives because thanks to science i can write down “no more Twix!” on a piece of paper instead of having to repeat it endlessly inside of my mind

snapplepeachtea

all these comments talking about how they found 23andme useful, but like... cant you just get a dna test at a hospital?

Gabby S

As a white woman I spent $100+ on the dog version of 23 and me (Embark) and that shit was absolutely worth it

Jimmy Bronchitis

Just did 23 and me and it turns out Timothée “Dark Wonka” Chowmein is a distant relative of mine. Will follow up on the TA tip line soon.

Jimmy Bronchitis

Never thought I’d see Liz Warren comment on the TA Patreon. C'est la vie man

sandragl

I empathize for my dad, who doesn’t know where our family came from out of the Russian Jewish diaspora, in his desire to do 23andme. Too common of a last name to use Ellis island & not enough extant family documents to trace back that far. I would never do it for the reasons you all describe, and I specifically think it is preying on ppl like my dad’s dream to trace the diaspora…but I get that dream! That dream (and its unachievability) is itself part of my culture…

Sneb

Hey if you’re looking for an amateur race scientist I’m sure will stancill is available

Robert Ditty

In middle school we had a “culture fair” where we had to research our family history and heritage, make a family tree, etc. I can just imagine if Liz would have seen this, she would have lost her shit. Yelling at children “this is all fake. You’re stupid, you’re boring!” It’s nuts she got so triggered over someone being curious about their heritage. I love these episodes when she starts to lose her shit and Brace tries to be the stable voice of reason. Never stop getting offended at arbitrary shit, Liz.

hugomac

It took waayy longer than I thought for you to say eugenics in this episode.

hamburglar

Missed a chance for a True Detective/racefaker crossover. The lady who plays the cop with the cheek piercings is accused of being a “pretendian”

ResilientBastard

My white parents did the ancestry.com one - learned nothing new about where their family was from - they immigrated in the early 20th c - but we did learn that my great grandpa sired a child with a housewife when he was living in a boarding house nextdoor! Told my grandpa on his death bed and he said “whattaya know”

mckinley faas

On the subject of the accent thing from the beginning of the episode, there is a "local irish punk band "here in Texas and the lead singer has the worst fake accent ever the guys whole family is from like the middle of Texas and he worked construction and we used to play this game where if u got him coked out enough he would slip n drop the accent

Tyler Pittman

I took a 23 and Me just to prove to my dad that he's not Cherokee. He's a racist as fuck Texan who unironically posts quotes from indigenous leaders, and when I told him I'm as British and inbred as a person can get, a couple days later he told me "he was lost and didn't know who he was as a person". I don't care if they make Sephiroths out of my blood, it was worth it.

.

Soooo many men with BBLs in the world

Jbear

Everyone is just doing the best they can. Love your racist dad

Axel H.

The only appeal of something like 23andme for me would be the ancestral/ethnic information, just because I’m curious. I really don’t want to know the health stuff. Knowing I have the Alzheimer’s gene or whatever is just going to make me more depressed and fatalistic, which doesn’t seem like a good outcome. My dad took one of these tests and found out he’s a significant part Sardinian, that’s like the extent of what I want to know lol

Axel H.

The health/medical-themed episodes really get people going.

SoldierBlue

Some interesting trivia, Charlie was originally intended to be black, until the publishers stepped in.

NicksYourMate

Liz we need a skincare ep; tips, tricks, product recs

Clark Stoehl

The problem is it's all probability based and only gives answers by extracting money from you and your family. You'd be much better off exploring actual genealogy sites and records. Random percentages don't tell a story, records do

Clark Stoehl

Your heritage is the stories and people who have actually affected your life. Plugging your DNA into a databank isn't gonna give you any answers, but talking to those who are alive and researching those who aren't can.

dan

i don’t need 23&me because a girl with a septum piercing who made me call my mom at 2 AM to ask the exact time of my birth has already told me everything about my fate

Jake Torrey

I especially liked the part where Yung Chomsky left in Brace's pause.

Frogger High Scorer

This one was particularly fun to listen to as a biologist, because they basically hit all the same reasons why many of us (or most, I would hope) also think that company sucks ass. Particularly good point about how the market sucks for getting tested for rare congenital diseases even when they have strong predictive markers (applies to treatment too but that’s another rabbit hole)

Dixie normus

So funny how that Kamala coconut quote is actually the most coherent thing she’s said of all time but her affect still makes her sound insane lol

Guys, love the pod but fwiw here’s my family’s experience of the BRCA-1 mutation. Oncologists at UCSF, one of the world’s foremost cancer centers, directly linked my wife’s mom’s ovarian cancer to her possessing this gene. She had few or no other risk indicators of cancer. She ultimately died of that cancer, and her daughters were advised by doctors to get tested for the BRCA-1 gene. As it turns out my wife’s sister does have it. She is also a health nut, yoga, no smoking etc, yet as feared she developed breast cancer in her twenties. She got a double mastectomy at that point and with chemo went into remission, but declined the hysterectomy which would have reduced future risk. Last year she learned, now in her mid thirties, that she has stage 4 ovarian cancer. From all of our research and the input of doctors this is very directly attributable to her BRCA-1 mutation. I am not an epic post person, in fact I almost never do and am not on any social media etc. But I thought it worth writing this here given the way you seemed to dismiss the dangers posed by the BRCA-1 mutation. If my sister in law had done the “Jolie effect” she almost definitely wouldn’t have terminal cancer today.

Well, Brace... apparently Israel takes these services seriously. Reportedly they are outlawed there.

My father was raised Jewish received some information in the 80s that he was mostly English and he was so relieved to quit being a Jew that he got super Catholic and then like thirty years later did one of these DNA things and discovered he was like all half Ashkenazi/half Russian and all Jew and he just totally fucking lost it and became a Jew again but a Jew who had been in Opus Dei for thirty years, so like if Hitler was a Zionist. I don’t talk to him so I saw this all go down through his wife’s Facebook

SaberTail

Worked there for a number of years. They paid us in stock options, and then didn't let any employees sell until after the price tanked. I'm sure the investors made out well, though. Don't really have much to add, except that I've subsequently heard Ann described as a "lifestyle CEO". As in, she does it because she'd fond of being a CEO and the attention and lifestyle that comes with it, not because she's particularly good at it. She owns a controlling stake in the company, though, so it's not going to change until it's sold or folds. (And it's pronounced whoa-JIT-ski.) If you believe people inside the company, the tests have always been a loss leader to amass a large database that can then be used for research and drug development. But genomes alone aren't worth anything without knowing the medical information of those people, and most people are (rightfully) reluctant to share it. Plus most of 23andMe's customers are young, so they haven't aged into diseases yet.

Nico

I don't know why people take their genetics so seriously. They don't determine your culture and never have. Ancestry DNA tests are for entertainment, they should not change your behaviour or your life at all.

Nico

Yes.

I thought Greece and Italy were the same country for years as a kid. My mom would say we were Italian and grandma said we were Greek. Mom did DNA thing some years ago… truth comes out and her bio father was actually some Greek guy that only grandma knew.

Scrotus

Just wanna add the context of concierge care becoming a larger thing in primary care specialties due to the decrease in pay for primary care in general, in which its already ass. Also you aren’t forced to have 15-20 minute maxes for appointments since the rate is controlled differently. It’s nasty what primary care has become, especially in comparison to other countries.

Scrotus

Additionally, my girlfriend in nursing school is told to refer to patients as clients, even for pediatrics/babies. It’s another example of the commodification of medicine

bruce

Instead of doing a blended last name bullshit thing if you can't decide what to call a kid you should have to give it a bastard name

Thankful Christian

A lot more that yall could’ve researched especially the connection between LDS and these companies and the LDS intelligence spheres relationship with these companies. This ep was below mid based on what yall are capable of.

The nationality thing is all based on reference to a self-reporting population. If my DNA matches a bunch of people who claim they're Belgian, that makes me part Belgian. So total bullshit. You might be interested in looking at into the links between the Church of LDS, big data and the ancestry / family history industry. I like when trueanon podcast responds to things. Makes me feel a lil more gay and dead inside ❤️

Jed Levin

What happened recently that put 23 & Me in the news? I listened to another podcast about it from last week. Also, why no mention of Ancestry.com? How are they doing?

Jessica S

That’s interesting, I thought I’d heard people say there’s little hard science to back up the veracity of their results. That would make sense if it’s working off of self-reported data.

江戸 ねビル

Please make an Apple vision video, like how you guys did with that VR chat game. When ever I’m down I think about Liz having conversations with zoomers in Naruto Avatars while Chomsky laughs uncontrollably with his mic muted)

Great episode, as someone who worked in the genetic testing industry, the d2c stuff is definitely snake oil. An ep on uBiome saga would be fun! It's got federal sweeps, fraud and the founders fleeing to Germany to avoid prosecution

Zoe Murphy

this has nothing to do with this episode but Liz how do you feel about Il Makiage?

Z & I

Doctor here! One quick amendment to the episode: family history is actually mostly genetics. but there are a lot of environmental and behavioral factors that put one at risk for various diseases. Sometimes environmental factors can interact with our genes too.

Samuel Matthew Hilton

People should just have access to MRI's. Insurance won't cover until you've gone through months of gate keeping and hoops when you probably should have got an MRI in the 1st place.
