So this is a bit late but I did mostly finish this in June, I just had to fiddle around with details a bit before posting. June is not only the month in which people draw Unicorns (under the Junicorn hashtag, if you have never heard of it before), it is also my birthday month. And this year it was the first month of the year that I lived without any body complications because I've had surgery in May.
So all in all it was an amazing month for me, and I thought the right way to celebrate would be to draw fanart of one of my absolute favorite movies. The Last Unicorn is a movie I grew up with. I think the fist time I saw it I must've been five, and I've seen it at least once a year since then. Usually they played it on easter and/or christmas on TV, later I had it on demand. It is an old movie but I love its style, how it emulates medieval art in how it picture trees and plants, how the outlines have an art deco feel and I adore the story itself.
There is also a personal attachment to the story of being trapped inside a body that is slowly dying around you, or a body that is just not your own or the right one. Forgetting who you really are... I don't want to sound overdramatic but I am sure a lot of people can identify with that feeling.
Working completely without outlines and only work in some textures was a struggle, it is not how I usually work but I couldn't emulate the painterly backgrounds of the original and I feel like this works well enough.
I made different versions for different seasons because the illustration lends itself well for that. For now, here is summer. I went with a darker green because the thing I love the most in the summer is fleeing to the woods, when the summer warmth does not reach the floor, when there is a cool softness to the forest floor littered with ferns and flowers. It is starting to get warm again here so I hope I will be able to go for a hike or two this year.
What is your favorite thing to do in summer?

I hope you are doing well
<3 Sarah
