Regarding the Zoro/Chopper relationship, it has something like a big brother, little brother feeling. I got this feeling the first time in the bathing scene in Alabasta, when Zoro did soap/wash choppers head and pelt while the others where fooling around.

The jokes (and animation) are canon quality. 'Nuff said! On the animation side, it's not just that the quality is getting better overall around that point, but they truly did use great animators and directors, (especially one famous award winning one) which is rare for filler in general. That specific filler arc is famously well-regarded for its high production value.

Now that we are over 200 episodes, I would love to hear your opinion on your comments when you started on episode 1 of this journey on why you hadn't started yet. I wrote it down while laughing and thinking, Flexie, much like me, becomes entirely too obsessed with well done characters so she will be hooked. But for reference, here is your quote "I've never been interested in the whole pirate concept... As far as pirates go, not my thing really. The character design, the animation style, I know, but I'm gonna say it right now and get it out of the what, is not my favorite either. But it is incredibly unique... but is never something that really attracted me"

That is overstating it a little, but OP5 isn't safe for some time. However OPs 7, 8, 12, and 14 should all be safe the entire time. And several others from now until OP17 are fine after 1 thing or just become safe very quickly.

So, while G8 might be filler, the conversation about what to do with the gold, and to get a shipwright, is a canon conversation to the manga. Toei just plops it down in the middle of this filler arc.

I'd never watched the G-8 arc before, but I’m really glad I’m discovering it with you. It’s actually really cool and I totally get the hype now! Even though it’s filler, it’s nice just seeing the characters hang out, share moments, and watch the story slowly build up. I’m realizing OP fillers are actually very well integrated into the main storyline. It doesn’t even feel like filler at all! It’s kinda funny at 46:39 how Usopp responds to Zoro by pointing at the sky (heaven), probably thinking he’s dying 😂
