When you think that it was 7 years and 2 months between the episode where Crockus told that Laboon is waiting since 50 years and the episode with reveal that Brook stays alive to fulfill that promise. Long time for the storytelling seed to bloom. Since that Episode all I have seen including me have started wondering how the reunion of Brook and Laboon will be.

Oda's patience as a storyteller is unmatched. It took eight years to get from Reverse Mountain to Thriller Bark in the manga and we were blown away when he made the connection between Laboon and Brook. The best part is that he actually already revealed it without anyone noticing unless they had a ridiculously photographic memory, since Brook's ship has the same design on the sails as the one shown very briefly in Laboon's flashback. One Piece has the rep of being the story to make you cry over a ship, but it deserves equal props for getting you to cry over the same whale more than once.

Last arc I cried when a boat died. This arc I cried over the unbreakable bond between a skeleton and a whale.

Franky is right. Brook is a real man. 50 years of isolation as a skeleton lost adrift within the fog of a deadly sea surrounded by the corpses of your crew. 50 years left alone to the memories of what once was and haunted by the now. 50 years with only one goal to see you through. Returning to your friend. It takes a lot of guts to live through pain even in our world, but Brook one ups everyone. Although he doesn't have guts. I wouldn't blame him for ending it, but he exemplifies the essence of humanity to me. One reason to live. That's all we want at the very least.

You say it feels so long ago. So think about this in real time Laboon was introduced in the anime in 2001 and thriller bark debuted in 2008. So you’re talking about a real 7 years difference. It’s so long ago that the tv’s aspect even changed to wide screen that’s why the border is made for flashbacks before a certain time.

Brooks VA (Chō) puts so much emotion into brooks lines. you can hear the desperation, anger, and desire to see laboon again. its interesting too because brooks face doesnt really move much in the scene so its all on the VA to convey the emotions and he knocked it out of the park. Brook is one of my favorite characters and his VA is a big part of why that is.

Finding out about Brook and Laboon is a top 1 moment in One Piece IMO. I literally stopped the episode when I watched it and yelled out, "Its the ****ing whale" so loud I woke my housemates up. Since then Brook has been my undisputed favorite OP character.

People always discuss about this being already planned or not when Laboon was introduced. We do know some the lore behind it, but ultimately it doesn't even matter 'when'... you gotta admire how Oda made those pieces fit so well, and mostly for the sake of emotional scenes. The reveal was a perfect moment, among a few others

Some non-Brook commentary. Luffy, the Captain who was not able to tell Sogeking apart from Usopp, was able to easily identify that Jigoro had Zoro's shadow. After not recognizing Alvida after her "diet", mistaking Kaku for Usopp, and not recognizing Koby after his glow-up, it appears that Luffy identifies others in his own way now as he noted that the "only" difference between Zoro and Jigoro were the sandals vs. Zoro's shoes.

As someone who does some writing, I find the 'planned or not' debate pretty meaningless. Stories surprise you all the time while you're writing, and things start fitting together in ways you never originally thought of. Oda's gift is keeping everything consistent, especially over such a long run. Planned or not, it's good storytelling when a small detail from hundreds of chapters earlier fits seamlessly into the current story.

This is the point where One Piece becomes less about finding the One Piece and more about reuniting with Laboon. The framed flashback episodes are a bit of a struggle for me. I have to skip while watching, and then remind myself this was aired in a time when you couldn't just rewatch whatever episode you wanted whenever you wanted. And as for Absalom, it's best to not think too hard about anything that happens within his plotline.

I'll just say that they really had to change some things about Laboon for technical reasons, but they made the changes work!

Luffy, Brook and Franky have such top level voice acting. Obviously the voice acting is high level in general, like you could argue chopper is also in that category, and some characters yet to be revealed too. Some of my favorite line deliveries come from when brook gets serious. There's real weight, conviction and emotion in those words, no language barrier could stop that.

One of the reasons why Brook protects his afro so fiercely is not only because it reminds him of Laboon, but also because he is afraid that Laboon might not recognize him if he were just a simple skeleton without the afro Laboon was familiar with.

This is why I always recommend people to watch sub instead of dub! English dub sounds so scripted and emotionless, they lack the emotion that the Japanese voice actors captures. I get that some people prefer to be able to watch the show without reading subtitles but man the trade-off is not worth it. My rule of thumb is to ALWAYS watch the original, no matter the language!

Gosh I wish this kind of love reaches everyone. I sob at the thought of how much brook and laboon must love each other, and how luffy being luffy enables them to come together again. PS: one piece’s pacing issue has started to become more apparent now, like adding such long flashbacks
