Dragon Con Schedule (Patreon)

TL;DR:

No chapters last week of August and first week of September

Dragon Con appearance schedule below

I'll be taking some time off to attend Dragon Con at the end of August into the start of September. That's a lot of travel time, to and from Australia, especially my part of it, which is an island south of the mainland. I'll be taking two weeks, which will include a little time to recharge the batteries.

For those who will be attending Dragon Con and want to see what I'm up to, here is my event schedule (subject to change by con organisers):

Wednesday (Pre-con event): In conversation with Matt Dinniman, author of Dungeon Crawler Carl. Friday 2pm: Book signing session at the Aethon booth (booth 3502).

Saturday 10am and 2:30pm: Panels, both at the Embassy CD Hyatt Sunday 7pm: litRPG event at the International North-South Hyatt

Sunday 7pm: litRPG event, International North-South Hyatt

Monday 1pm: Panel, Embassy CD Hyatt

Ya know, imma be "that guy" for a second and ask, why can you not pre-write some chapters? For 10 bucks at 12 chapters a month, I feel like it should be a little more possible to stick to schedule.

i'm pretty sure you're welcome to cancel or downgrade your subscription if you're unsatisfied with the benefits vs the cost.

There's actually a bit of history on the why of this. Shirt thought the same thing. Burnout made it harder to write, and guilt from having a hard time writing made him feel obligated to sacrifice his personal time. Chapter quality dropped significantly in that period and people stopped reading. Once Shirt re-established a better work/life balance and gave himself the leeway to do things like this, the quality went back up. In other words, he's doing it this way because he's tried both and the results speak for themselves.

Please dont take offense. Ive been a fan for a while but only recently got the patreon. if you cant handle the way he works id suggest just waiting for the book to release. in my opinion any patreon like this should really be for their fans that’ll support no matter what. adding pressure to what im sure is a sensitive process is only gonna ruin things.

I would very much like to have buffer chapters for situations like this. The problem is that I've learned the hard way that overtaxing myself doesn't work. The writing gets worse as I burn out, my mental health deteriorates and I end up taking a break anyway to recover. What it would take would be me taking some time off where I wasn't doing anything else. No family trips, no burnout recovery, no trips to have meetings or attend conventions in the US. Especially the US trips, that travel is a killer. The last time I ended up arriving 18 hours late with what was already meant to be a 24 hour trip.

you say this a business yet to me this a artistic endeavor and writing especially can take years and somehow he does it on a consistent basis for only 10 dollars a month. When you support any artist the words “consistent” and “communication” are rarely used or expected within reason of course.

Dragon Con huh, need to check out info about it. Will there be free biscuits? If yes, I would be worried that Stash would con you out of them - it is the convention for the dragons after all, isn't it?? (just being silly, enjoy your visit and time off!! Also keeping my subscription as is - no matter the time off. Because nothing else can cure my addiction for freshly baked ... chapters)

I totally understand, and I'm not trying to make a huge deal out of it. Ultimately, like NA1 said, I canceled my subscription before posting my comment because I knew it wouldn't be a popular opinion. That being said, IN MY OPINION, when you take time off for conventions or optional events, I feel it would be on the author to make up for the extra time. Ultimately, I pay 10 bucks a month for 12 chapters, and when 6 chapters don't get delivered, I'm suddenly paying double price for each chapter. In cases such as before, where your mom got sick, I can totally understand not prioritizing writing, as family comes first, but in this case, I don't feel like it's a huge ask to pre write 6 chapters. All in all, I love the book and hope you keep writing it, but maybe the month to month subscription isn't for me.

@Baked Muffins. I kind of get where you are coming from. My subscription has just expired and I am not going to be renewing it for a while. For me it isn't so much the money, instead it is the one chapter at a time nature that I don't care for. I far prefer to binge read a bunch at a time. So I will come back in a few months and catch up. This isn't just for Shirt either, there is one other author that I was reading on patreon that I doing the same thing with.

I will add that Shirt has been pretty good about early notice for most of his breaks. This one cut it kind of close, but does not represent a pattern.

Totally understand Baked Muffins. I myself only get the more expensive subscription when i'm doing a reread and can't help myself. I normally just save up the pdfs and do a binge when a book is complete or nearly complete. Part of why i made my comment was because i had literally just downgraded my subscription again because i don't find the $10 tier of sufficient benefit vs cost.

I am quite disappointed that there was less than a month notice on having a two week break, my subscription already refreshed beforehand so I'm paying for nothing and had absolutely no say in the matter. This is a really poor move on your part. I don't care that you take time off, but you should either pause your subscriptions if it's a notable amount of time, or give enough notice so that people can adjust their subscriptions.

you are new here, arent you? Shirt regularly takes 1-2 month per year off and week or two breaks also when needed. This Dragon con break was 1st announced in last year October and again this spring. There will be whole Dec off, in case you missed the announcements.

Anyone know if the lower tiers will get chapters until we hit the time Shirt was releasing or if we get paused until September? No issues either way, just curious.

So "blame the victim" then, got it. It isn't reasonable to say the schedule was posted in the spring when it's not even pinned, I wasn't a subscriber then or last October and I don't read a backlog of a year of posts whenever I subscribe to someone. What an insane thing to suggest. There is a basic level of courtesy that wasn't met here and yes I do feel a little ripped-off. The month-long breaks typically have billing paused, and are not a concern. My issue is not the break, it's the poor warning so I couldn't pause my subscription around it. It's not just one chapter off, its half a subscription's worth.

my understanding is it's a "con" issue not just dragon con with people not taking the time to go back to their rooms and bath and use deodorant, it's pretty bad when people are walking around with signs saying use deodorant.

you are correct Ray. I used to play MtG, Warhammer, and Warmachine competitively and no matter what con it was it seems that this specific problem always seemed to pop up.

There is no victim to blame. You didn't know where to look for the information and no one knew to point you to it. That's a situation, not an attack, and your post and the above reply will point others in the right direction, so that's good. Look at the past posts and filter out the ones tagged "chapter" and the remaining posts will be mostly status updates and advance notices for breaks.

No, but you can change your membership for those months for yourself if you wish to. Shirt used to pause all memberships during his breaks, but there were too many technical problems that caused members to miss out on posts they should have been able to see. He polled his subscribers and we voted strongly in favor of him NOT pausing memberships anymore.
