Jason hugged his sister. They were alone on the rooftop garden of her family home.

“This is good,” she said. “Hugging those avatars of yours is like hugging cold rubber.”

“Technically, this is an avatar as well. The difference is—”

“Shut up, little brother. Save your magic nonsense for later.”

“I only just got here, and you’re already so mean,” he teased.

She let him go and placed a hand on each of his shoulders, staring him in the eye.

“I’m sorry for how we left things,” she said. “I know it was amiable, but there was a distance. A distance that shouldn’t be there with family.”

“I understand, Eri. I was damaged. You were right to see me as dangerous. It ran deeper than any of us realised. After I left, it took me a long time to come to terms with just how close I was to…”

He turned away from her.

“Jason, we didn’t grasp what you were facing. The changes that magic was bringing were just beginning for us. For the whole planet, really. You were deeper in than we were, and we didn’t understand what that meant. Not until Europe fell around us, drenched in death and blood. That was your life before it was ours, and what it was doing to you scared us.”

“It should have.”

“We should have been there for you. Instead. we pushed you away.”

“And you were right to do so. You had a family to protect.”

“You’re our family.”

“Eri, I came close to going places you don’t come back from. Not all the way, and I don’t think I did, really. My friends had to stop me from doing things I wouldn’t want you to see. To be around. Your instincts were good, big sister. I didn’t know how far gone I was, but you know me. You saw it. I wasn’t someone that I would want anywhere near Emi.”

He turned back to look at her again, giving her a smile.

“I’m in a much better place, now. And I didn’t mean to be away so long, but I have responsibilities. To be the person I want to be, I can’t turn away from them, even if it costs me. And you. But I’m back, now. The important thing is that family is the place you can come home to, even when you’ve made mistakes.”

“You know, we could have talked about this through your weird avatars.”

“It’s not the same. For you, the bodies I make don’t feel real. For me, the emotions don’t. The avatars are great for channelling power or discussing plans, but there’s a remove. A distance. It’s like remembering something you felt a long time ago. That’s why I only showed up when I needed to. Why I held back on the sappy reunions. I want the sap all over me, not the rubber guy you’re making time with.”

“Well, that didn’t take long. I’m regretting you coming back already.”

Jason laughed and collected his sister into another hug.

“They’re almost here,” he said. “They’re about to come inside.”

He let his sister go and looked over the edge of the roof.

“Or not,” he amended.

Four people floated up over the edge of the roof, each surrounded in a complex array of glowing lines and sigils. They were Emi, along with Jason’s widowed sister-in-law, Amy, and her daughters, Hana and Jace. Nine cube devices floated around Emi, producing the magic that held them aloft. The devices were akin to Rubik’s cubes, but with glowing runes instead of blank colour on the panels. They twisted and shifted, shooting off points of light that adjusted the spherical magic diagrams.

Amy stood slightly ahead of her daughters, Jason noting the protectiveness in her body language. He knew that she didn’t view Jason as a physical threat to her children but an emotional one, and he agreed with the sentiment.

Jason hadn’t seen Kaito and Amy’s daughters since they were small children. Jace was nineteen, now, and Hana twenty-three. The age Jason had been when he was pulled into Pallimustus. The uncertainty in their expressions barely touched the complexity of what Jason sensed in their emotions. Confusion, resentment, hope, regret. Jason understood completely as he experienced a similar mix of feelings.

For Jason and Amy, the fraught and complex history between them hung in the air like London fog. That history became a strange legacy for her girls to grow up with. A dead father. A mysterious uncle, absent but much spoken of, somewhere between a cult leader, a patron deity and the Wizard of Oz.

For a long time, they all stood, staring at one another. Jason noted that Hana was silver-rank, with an aura foundation that was stable beneath its current turmoil. Jace was bronze-rank, although near the peak. They both showed the results of having been trained by Rufus.

“You look like my father.” Jace said, finally breaching the silence. “From pictures, and videos. He died before I can really remember anything.”

Jason nodded. The days of him begrudging the increased resemblance to his brother with each rank up had died with Kaito.

“Except for the chin,” Hana said. “Yours is big. Like, measurable increase in your grooming products cost big. Did you grown the beard to mask the size, or were you spending too much on razors?”

“Ranking up has made it smaller,” Amy told her girls. “You should have seen him at your age. You could use it as a bottle opener.”

Jason raised his eyebrows in her direction.

“Really?” he asked.

“Don’t bother denying it, Jason. I still have photographs.”

Being jibed by Amy felt both odd and intensely familiar. She had been his best friend, going back to his oldest memories. The relationship had turned to poison, but that time was long gone. It was half a lifetime ago, and neither was person they had been. Now, they were each a person the other used to know, but hadn’t in a long time. All they shared were old memories and two girls, raised with no father and an absent uncle. Jason turned his gaze from their mother to the young women.

“I doubt you remember me,” he said. “I know you’ve heard stories. Hard to avoid them, growing up in a place built from my power. I imagine you have a lot of questions. About your dad, and other things. Let’s sit down and get your aunt to cook us something. You can ask me all the questions you like.”

“Don’t you have to get back to Australia?” Erika asked. “You have things left to do there, right?”

“Not more important than this.”

***

Solomon Dreyfus was Secretary of the Department of Prime Minister & Cabinet, within the Australian government. He didn’t like the job which, more often than not, amounted to image management for a man who, described generously would be…

Solomon let out a sigh, finding no way to finish the thought. If he had to be generous, it was best not to describe Prime Minister Truffett at all. If all you knew about the man was that he came to power through fearmongering over magical gender transitions during rank-up, it was all you really needed to know. Solomon knew a lot more, which only made it worse.

This latest debacle had left him wanting to quit, an urge that came somewhere between weekly and monthly. Once again, he resisted that urge, knowing that whoever replaced him would be worse. He could ameliorate the worst inclinations of his boss and, once in a blue moon, even do some good. Someone else in his job could easily pander to the Prime Minister, with little care for the damage they dealt.

He’d only gotten the job because Truffett needed the publicity, after several of Solomon’s predecessors had been scapegoated in sequence. Solomon’s chairmanship of the Foundation for Ethics in Public Policy was a balm for Truffett’s scandal-marked image, while Solomon had hoped to accomplish some actual good.

Clashes with the Prime Minister had been frequent. Always behind closed doors, but it was an open secret that he and his boss were at each other’s throats. Solomon was difficult to get rid of, however, as firing his very public ethical hire was not something the embattled Prime Minister could afford. He also had trouble going around Solomon, as Truffett was an expert in backroom deals and cutting favours, not actual governing.

Solomon’s secretary notified him it was time for his next meeting and he made his way to the conference room. Josh Hillier, from the Ministry of Defence, and Sue Sheehan, from the Ministry of Supernatural Affairs, were already waiting. Solomon didn’t bother with small talk as he slid into a chair.

“Sol, did you just have lunch?” Josh asked.

“A while ago. Why?”

“Do you smell butter?” Josh asked. “I could swear I smell butter.”

“Focus, Josh. What do we have?” he asked.

Josh and Sue shared a glance.

“You should have the summary of our analysis in your inbox by the time we’re done here,” Josh said. “But, in short, a guy from New South Wales and his friends may now be the most powerful military force on the planet.”

“That’s preliminary, obviously,” Sue added. “We’ve only seen a limited sample of what Asano and his allies are capable of. It could be that they worked very hard to make a show of power and are hiding critical weaknesses. Our assessment, however, is just the opposite. That he’s holding power in reserve. We’ve been in contact with our international counterparts, and that seems to be the consensus.”

“What about the people who Asano and his people fought?” Solomon asked. “Any indication of who they are or where they’re from? I’ve heard the recording and read the transcript of Asano in the command room at the artefact city site. What of the implications that they were brought in from somewhere to kill him?”

Josh and Sue shared another glance before turning back to Solomon.

“We do have answers there,” Josh said. “Much of it seems to be sourced from Asano himself, though. If it is true, things could get very messy.”

“Things are already messy. You’re saying they could be worse?”

“Sol,” Sue said. “We have to ask: did you know?”

“Know what?”

Solomon felt a headache coming on as his advisors started talking about interdimensional aliens and the Prime Minister being part of some Illuminati-style secret collective.

“It does make a twisted kind of sense,” he was forced to admit afterwards. “In a world where alternate reality pirates are an actual thing, anyway. People with power fear someone taking it away, or someone else having more. You say the Prime Minister is in on this?”

“He’s on the list.”

“And where does this list come from?”

“Lenora Coleman got it from Anna Tilden,” Sue told him. “She got it from the Americans, and claims Asano’s turncoat magic pirate captain cross-confirmed at least some of the names. Names that include my minister, and some of your senior staffers, Sol.”

Solomon nodded.

“The Prime Minister has a history with Asano. Back when he was minister of your department, Sue, he was the one who suggested seizing Asano Village and giving it over to the Network. It was no secret that his motivation was largely driven by his hatred of Jason Asano.”

“That makes dealing with Asano complicated,” Josh said. “There’s no way he leaves Asano Village alone, right?”

“I wouldn’t think so,” Solomon said. “The question is, does he approach it politically, or just come in and do what he likes?”

“Meaning what?” Josh asked. “Burning to the ground?”

“I won’t say I didn’t consider it,” Jason said.

Solomon, Sue and Josh turned to look at the other end of the conference table where Jason Asano was sitting, tucking into a plate of food.

“Sorry,” he apologised. “My sister made these fantastic Hasselback potatoes, and I couldn’t not bring them. You guys want to get in on this? I have more.”

“No, thank you,” Solomon said.

“I knew I smelled butter,” Josh said. “Have you been here all along?”

“Yeah,” Jason said, then put a forkful of potato in his mouth before letting out a little moan of pleasure. “Oh, that’s good.”

Josh eyed the plate hungrily.

“I did skip lunch,” he said. “Maybe I could—”

“Josh,” Solomon cut him off. “Asano, have you been sitting here, invisible, the whole time?

“It’s not invisibility,” Jason said, slightly mumbling through his food. “It’s a perception trick that uses aura manipulation to create a dissonance between mundane and supernatural perception. Your senses do recognise my presence. You see me sitting at the table, and smell the rosemary and butter sauce. But because of what I’m doing with my aura, your supernatural senses instinctively tell the part of your mind that processes perception to ignore me. It even works on regular people. Most don’t realise normal rankers can perceive auras, but they can. They’re just very bad at it. Vampires are great at using their auras on normal people. I learned this trick from a vampire, in fact, although I’ve developed it a lot since then.”

“Mr Asano, what are you doing here?” Solomon asked.

“Well, you’re right about me and Other Gordon.”

“Who?” Sue asked.

“The Prime Minister,” Solomon said.

“That’s him,” Jason said. “We don’t get along. I was, if I’m being honest, rather childish in my attitude when he and I first met. If you combine that with his personality, stupidity and more or less everything he’s ever done, then it’s clear that he and I won’t ever get along. That being said, I would like to have a productive relationship with the Australian government. Word is that you, Mr Solomon Dreyfus, are a smart, capable and, against all odds, decent man. My hope is that you and I can figure out a few things.”

“And what things are those?”

“Well, I’d like to start by apologising for my little rant in Lenora’s bunker. I still had a few grievances to blow off steam about, and she didn’t deserve me monologuing like a supervillain. I’ve apologised to Lenora in person, of course; it would be weird to have you pass the apology on. I’m hoping that we can move past most of that.”

“Most?” Sue asked. “What is it that you don’t want to move past?”

“I voiced some grievances. I can live with your government reclaiming the standing stones. It’s a giant, mysterious magic thing in the middle of nowhere. It seems only fair for there to be an interest in it. And I am willing to put aside my personal animosity for Truffett, in the name of relations with another head of state.”

“Are you formally asking Australia to recognise your territory in Europe as a sovereign state?”

“What? Oh, no. You’ll have to sort that out with my grandmother. I’m a king, now.”

“In the other world?”

“It’s a little more complex than that. I’ll show you, if you like, but I want to discuss Asano Village first. I’m willing to put aside old grievances, but that one isn’t old. My family built Asano Village. Our money, our toil, and your government handed it over to…”

He sighed.

“We know what you did, so there’s little point rehashing it. But those people are still there, right now. It’s a slap in the face. My first instinct was to go over there and kill everyone I find, but I’m trying to be better than that. My next instinct was to turn on all the old mana accumulators that aren’t necessary now that the magic level has risen. Take off the safeties and let them run; overload the magical infrastructure until things started exploding. Burn it all down, as Mr Hillier suggested. The people there would sense it in time to evacuate, even with their mediocre magical senses. No casualties, which is why I’m still quite partial to that idea.”

He plucked a drink out of the air and sipped at it before setting it down on the table.

“My local political advisor suggested a different approach” he continued. “Have you met Anna Tilden, Mr Dreyfus?”

“We’ve had dealings, during her time with the United Nations,” Solomon said.

“She suggested that I look at Asano Village as a chance for the Australian government to show some goodwill.”

“You want it back?”

“It’s tainted ground, Mr Dreyfus. Too-long inhabited by unwelcome interlopers. The infrastructure we built was designed to fend off monster waves at a time where the magic levels were different. We’d have to rebuild from scratch, and there are better places for that. What I’m looking for is a gesture. An apology for taking my uncle’s land, and an open acknowledgement of why it happened.”

“It happened because you’re rude and Truffett doesn’t like it when people imply he’s not important. Even if the Prime Minister was willing to acknowledge that, which he won’t be, do you genuinely believe it would help anything?”

Jason shook his head sadly.

“I do not. Your point is well made, Mr Dreyfus.”

He took his plate and beverage and shoved them into the air, where they vanished. He then got to his feet.

“Let’s just say an apology, then. Public. I’m not fool enough to insist it be sincere, but none of this ‘I’m sorry you feel offended’ crap. And I’m not going to push you for any promises today, Mr Dreyfus. I recognise political decisions take time and deliberation. The good decisions, at least.”

At a gesture from Asano, a white archway rose from the floor. It was filled with gold, silver and blue energy.

“So, who wants to see my kingdom?”

Thank u for the story

Emiya

Thank for the chapter LETS GOO BEGINNING OF BOOK 13!!

mhaj58

So good to see Amy and the girls. I really hope that this isn’t the last time they are in the story

Michael McMahon

Rolling straight into Book 13, just brilliant. Tftc!

Thunder0ni

“A king in the other world?” “Oh no I’m a whole universe”

Unwillingmainer

Jason is going to get to diamond and transcendent rank and people will still be commenting on his chin. "It's weird one of the fundamental forces in the cosmos has a chin you could put and eye out with." He may be apologizing for his rant and understands that nothing he gets from Other Gordon will be sincere, but he still can't help himself in being dramatic. At least he's gotten a little better at explaining stuff and listening to others when it comes to political bullshittery.

Dylan Alexander

Probably the part of the story I least care about but we will see. I just want to go back to adventuring. However that’s definitely gone now haha

m4l4ch1m4v3t

Nah... in this situation I think murdery Jason is more than fair

Sean Beasle

Thank you for the crack! Posted from my house!! I’m stupid thankful for you shirt!!

JonO

Wow, I was certain amy ran off with the other asanos.... glad I'm wrong, since she's family.... but also kind of disappointed.... for drama's sake only lol. I like that Jason is trying to be more measured about asano village, but just like with the amy situation....I was hoping for more bloodshed lol Ah well

Agent P.

"Want to see my kingdom?" Which planet? Prison planet? Lol

shawn B

Glad it seems like Amy has no animosity. “Who wants to see my kingdom?” Straight up showing his grandeur

Harbby

Ty ty

james foster

Ohhh, me, me, I want to see it!!

Mr_Top_Hat

I love how nonchalantly he threatens to just kill everyone he finds in the village it's the fact that we know if he had to he probably would

Sean

I kind of hope he stays for a while and ends up being visited by more GABs. I like the idea of all these people wondering how powerful Jason is and they get a front row seat to a fundamental force of the multiverse conversing with him.

Monty

Thank you foe the chapter and yay book 13 begins

mhaj58

I’m still hoping that Nik insults her to the point where she electroshocks him and he then yells “Father Please”. We are long overdue for a LARP scene now that we’ve got back to Earth

Razeel Nightfall

I think there should be a lot of back pay coming his way. Just depends it they give it freely or bit by bit.

Heather White

Nicely balanced chapter. In the first half he acknowledges the damage he did to the relationships he’s now trying to mend, and in the second half he shows the kind of person he’s decided to be so he can mend those relationships (but still get the Australian closure he needs).

Cryfdwr

I’m still waiting for Emi and Nik to meet. That’ll be so good!

Matt H

If you do something "wrong", apologize for it, and then do the exact same thing again: at what point does an apology stop mattering? There's a point where an apology stops having any meaning because it's clear the person is either unable or unwilling to change. So why should they even bother trying to apologize at that point if it's completely meaningless?

MyseriousMage

I'm a bit disappointed we didn't get to actually see the Emi-Jason reunion.

devildham

Politics. He's shown a bit of personal power. Now he's forcing them to recognize him as a political power. He just declared himself a king. If Earth recognizes that then they have to treat him like the foreign power that he is. If Other Gordon still tries to play F Around then he is going to Find Out what it's like to have Australian conquered under his watch.

sjmcc13

Now it probably needs to include Kaito and Amy's kids.

Michael Smalley

Remember that he wants it done in public. The person may not mean it, but the very act incites a level of humility/shame in publics eye.

Martin Tomsic

I love that the girls started in on his chin right away! Was that Amy coaching them to say that, or just them noticing it themselves?

JonO

Honestly, if the gabs decide to visit while he's giving a tour in his "kingdom" that's be a very great way to show the "important" people of earth how insignificant they really are overall since I'm certain Jason's universe can support a diamond prime vessel to visit.

ByLAWphoto

I'm glad Erica apologized. I really hated her by the time Jason left earth. For someone who claimed to love him, she sure treated him like s***. I'm glad to see that she acknowledged that she was a wench.

Timothy

...and drink.

devildham

Personally, I'd still take back the village. They could turn it into The Asano Embassy and Sandwich Emporium.

Martin Tomsic

I'm sure there is going to be a massive Asano barbecue in one of these next few chapters. Just need to square away a few things first so that there aren't any distractions.

Timothy

...and Drink.

Ligeia

Tftc! It was nice to see that he and Amy are getting along better, and it was even better to learn there's an actually ethical person riding herd on Other Gordon, who is revealed to be an even bigger slimeball than we already knew he was. I also like Jason's idea of turning on the mana accumulators, with safeties off, for Asano Village and watching the whole place explode a bit at a time. I'd watch that, with popcorn! And we finally learned what Emi's "Rubik's cube" device is for. Did she invent that, I wonder?

ShowBizGAL 1996

I liked seeing who Jason wants as the next Prime Minister. Want to bet he's gonna get involved in Australia's politics and make that happen? Other Gordon's REALLY gonna be peeved when that happens, won't he? LOL!!!

Evan Knight

Jason wants other Gordon to loose face

Aaron Lack

Awesome, now Nik needs to meet his relatives

Martin Tomsic

Did I read that right? Is Emi using 3-dimensional ritual circles like Gordon does with his Intrinsic Mandate Magic? Edit: I should have been more precise, Emi was using SPHERICAL magic diagrams, not just using circles to make 3-D spells.

Martin Tomsic

I still think it would have been a great resort for visitors from Palli.

Evan Knight

Other Gordon is going to feel so slighted that Solomon was invited to see “Asano World” and not him, despite the animosity between him and Jason.

Brad S

Okay, what the f is this? The last chapter was clearly him hugging Emi, not Eri, and I don't appreciate the apparent soft retcon. It really waters down the emotional impact of the last line of the previous chapter/book and makes me feel conned for expecting yet another emotional payoff that didn't materialize as promised.

GentlemanG33k

I need to know essence combinations

Liesmith

Can someone refresh my memory on what chapter Jason met Other Gordon? For some reason I'm completely drawing a blank.

sjmcc13

If it is a public apology, Jason can easily slip in a line to make them wonder. That and the "hit" and who ordered it will likely come out eventually.

sjmcc13

Just let Stash have it... dragons need lairs.

sjmcc13

Rufus was not there though. Or his father. Or grandfather apparently.

Thomas Black

The last chapter ended with him seeing emi out front of a bakery. This book started with him on a roof so it is at a different time.

Daniel Wills

New drinking game; did you know that Jason is a whole universe?

sjmcc13

"The???, you know it is a multiversity right"

sjmcc13

They were "coached".

Samuel Strode

I want to see Jason’s kingdom!

Nick

She's an intrinsic magic specialist, it was mentioned in passing that her essence combination was customized and had implications of the power they'd have.

MikeHawkins

Its the first chapter of another book. The last chapter was the last chapter of that book. You're not going to get the same emotional tug from the first chapter as you are the last

Bekannt Machen

TYFTC! What a way to start off a book. It seems like Jason is sticking with his game plan. Show that anything earth does will not effect what Jason chooses to do. He also seems intent on demonstrating being open to working with people. Ultimately, unfortunately, those with power will do stupid things to keep it. Asano Noriko will probably get herself and her clan wiped out. Her arrogance is breathtaking. I would love to see Other Gordon get his comeuppance. It will interest me a great deal to see how it all shakes out.

Joanna

Time moved forward a bit. It tends to do that. Clearly after saying hi to Emi he asked her to round up Amy and her kids and bring them to Erika and Ian’s place and he’d meet them there, which he did. No retconning needed

Kevari

Noriko might nuke the village herself after hearing that she and hers are only allowed to stay by Jason's grace

Iain Grubb

When he returned home to Castleton beach and used the cloud yacht as homebase, Anna, his now dead girlfriend, Nigel and Gordon all met him there to discuss him joining the Network, Other Gordon came along to represent the then Prime Minister and was run off the boat fairly quickly.

wanderer26

Back when Jason first starting to negotiate with the network.

Joanna

Yeah, they’re all cousins, after all

Hornbach

That wont Work since any Prime vessel that enters earth would annihilate the dimensional membrane and thus destroy the Planet and kill everybody Accept Jason.

Sebastiaan B

Those people on Earth have no clue what they even are.

Joanna

I mean, 4th is pretty close

Bekannt Machen

I would like to think that Clive’s and Farrah’s instruction in ritual magic were a solid foundation. I suspect she did indeed invent them. I also suspect Gary helped make massive improvements. She’s using them to make a small group of people float. Intriguing!

Joanna

TYFTC!!! I’m so happy to see Amy and her kids are okay. When we first heard about something happening to Asano Village I was worried they might have been hurt or killed. Anyway, enjoy the weekend, and you Aussies don’t forget to change your clocks!

GentlemanG33k

No her essence combination specializes in formation interactivity.

Malcolm

I’m definitely in favor of burning the town down

Joanna

I’m guessing it’s actually a bunch of two-dimensional circles nested into a 3-D whole, and they’ll certainly be based on “normal” magic theory rather than Gordon’s weird stuff

TechB

I don’t know if I'd do it. Other Gordan set Jason up to be killed. If it were me, would I let that go with an insincere apology? I don't think so. I'd at least force him into a portal to my real self. Let him know what happens the next time he tries something.

Jordan Rogers

Yes but seriously, skipping the emi scene is pretty crazy his most important human connection is breezed by? We get a little something with his sister but with all the build up for his relationship with emi you’d expect atleast a half chapter on it after the ending of 12.

David

It’s not light novel protagonist levels of forgiveness, but it’s close. “Being the bigger person” in this scenario would make me resent everyone involved even more than I did before.

Alicia Bolick

Though even if Dawn or a GAB shows up, Earthlings will have no idea who they are or why they are impressive.

David

I’d be fine if it was. Forgiving her is ridiculous. I still think she was spying on him along with his mother and that she was kicked out of Asano Village when Noriko showed up. She’s only there because there was no other choice to keep her kids safe and I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised to find she guilted her way into whatever she wanted.

Kenneth Welever

Also that's supposed to be a book ending while this one is supposed to be the beginning of the next book. Little less jarring when you read it as a book than as a webnovel which is how we're used to reading HWFWM

Ligeia

But you can't force someone into a portal.

Kevin Dillon

It has to hurt him in his pride. The bad guy needs to be hung out to dry and kept magically alive.

Rowdy Robby

Missed an opportunity to introduce his son to his Grandpa, cousins, aunts and uncles. Can't wait for him to meet Emi. #morenik

Kevin Dillon

It has to hurt him in his pride. The bad guy needs to be hung out to dry and kept magically alive, e.g., suspended naked in a transparent energy bubble over the nation's capital, or hanging by his boxers from the flagpole.

Maudley

Yeah this is not about Jason's feelings and being dramatic or whatever, this is about power plays and forcing governments to treat him as and thus signal/acknowledge that he's a power player without blood

Rowdy Robby

Definitely book 4. They had a meeting on the cloud boat with the Network.

Rowdy Robby

But you can "persuade" them.

Ligeia

Yeah, intrinsic magic is built on a totally different scale than what Emi is doing IM is used by GABs mostly, and is so difficult even Dawn only has a tiny grasp on it. Plus it's very different from formation interactivity, which is what she's doing with the cubes -- she's causing them to work together to make a single bigger formation. She is some kind of a genius, that's for sure!

Maudley

Why do that when you can rub it in just how inconsequential a battle way out of their league was to you?

Samuel Strode

And he was talking people coming to him soon

Martin Tomsic

@Nick - Her intent was to specialize in large-scale formation interactivity. Her essences were Vast, Myriad, and Harmonic, which was supposed to give Unity, but instead gave Resonance. Nobody is an intrinsic magic specialist except for GABs and Avatars of Doom. @Joanna - You're probably right. But it took me aback because even Clive hadn't ever heard of or done 3-D ritual circles. She really is going to be a prodigy that is going to blow Clive's mind. Edit: I reread the chapter and it was not layered circles but actual spheres.

Owen Kaz

Yeh, everyone seemed to be focused on the fact that his brother died. Not on the fact that he and her both pulled an unforgivable move. No matter how much the rift began to mend, if at all

Josh

I actually think it would have been a perfect place to have a nervous Zara hanging out with Jason

Samuel Strode

And biscuits the size of wheel barrels

PrometheusDarkflame

Huh, I think that’s the first time we’ve seen that rank-ups fix gender shit too. Way to make me even more jealous of Jason getting Isekai-d here. It’s not even for me but it’d be nice to be in a world where it is just a natural process that gets fixed as you rank up and not an entire expensive, not particularly effective and politically bullshit thing. Thanks for the chapter!

TechB

@ Laura Yes but it's Other Gordan. He's a b***h. Just scare him by flexing your aura. Tell him to go through the portal or fight to the death. It wouldn't take much.

Ligeia

I doubt it -- I suspect he realizes that Jason knows he was one of the group inviting the pirates to kill him and then rape the planet so he probably thinks Jason would permanently trap him in his kingdom. Which is actually a lovely idea, come to think of it!

Ryan

Here here!

Jordan Rogers

I’m confused on the ages of Jace and Hana, 19 and 23, Jason was gone over or roughly 20 years. Both nieces were alive before he left how can one be younger than since Jason left for pallimustus again?

Ryan

Didn't give the minute and second off the meet? >:(

Ligeia

I'm sure that we'll see a long Jason-Emi conversation in a future chapter. Plus talking with Rufus about how his star pupil is doing, plus all the other Clan kids. Rufus has been effectively running a branch Remore Academy for years now, after all!

Ligeia

And Emi at least will absolutely *swoon* when Nik calls Jason "Dad"!

Robert Hardwick

You can't force him to go through the portal, but as Gary's old mentor said, you can do other things until he willingly goes through the portal. It's not torture, it's a VERY well deserved beating.

Jordan Rogers

Also he was only gone for 3 years originally and weren’t they born shortly before he originally went to pallimustus or one of them while he was gone the first time? My math might be bad but emi should be somewhere around 35-37and these nieces should be 26-30range right? And Jason should be around 45-50?

TechB

@ Maudley Because not doing anything just encourages them to plan better and try again. Sometimes the best way to deal with a bully is to punch them in the face. Even if you know you'll lose the fight. Teach them that comming after you comes at a cost. Jason's a lot stronger. There's no point fighting people like Other Gordan. So put the fear of God in them. Let them know what happens if he tries again.

Jordan Rogers

I think the apology is from the government for the theft of the village, and Jason’s holding a seperate account for OG (truffet) I’d assume he gets introduced to real Gordon and maybe Collin too

Josh

It was said in the last chapter of book 12 that Jason was born 44 years ago

Jordan Rogers

That might be wrong too? Cause he was 23 almost 24 when he originally got isekai’d right? It was roughly 6 years before the pallimustus transformation zone and somewhere around 20 years since the end of the transformation, plus however long he just travelled pallimustus with his team before coming to earth, should be 50ish right?

GentlemanG33k

20 years ago Jason first went to the other world, Hana had already been born Jace was born during his first year and a half away most likely named after him.

Jordan Rogers

I need some kind of time line after his astral king transformation, it was confusing here and there by jumping perspectives so much in the book 11 bonus chapters

Martin Tomsic

I'm guessing Other Gordon will "unexpectedly" resign and live a very quiet, but public, life. Let him live as a disgraced former politician that is never forgotten or spoken of in a kind manner. That would be a greater punishment to Other Gordon than just killing him or dropping him on Jason's prison planet.

TBONEMAN

I can already imagine him explaining how he is the laws of physics now.

TechB

@ Jordan Maybe that's what they ment but they were talking about OG not liking it. It could've been him not liking having to make a public apology. Or him not liking his government having to make a public apology. Guess we'll see.

David

The smack down when someone refers to Nik as “what” instead of “who”

Blake N.

When he had the first official meeting with the network in his houseboat in book 4

Aldrich Veluz

I hope we get a Gordon and Other Gordon face-off. Other Gordon hiring mercs and Gordon saying - “I got this.” in his own way.

David

I don’t think I’ll ever trust her to be genuine around Jason.

David

She would have been kicked out with anyone else who didn’t belong to the obvious enemy faction of the Asanos. Same for his mother. I doubt they moved by choice.

StarkRG

The chapter doesn't say that's what happens, just that fearmongering about it happening was part of the platform Other Gordon ran on. That said, ranking up *is* supposed to bring your bodily appearance closer to your soul's ideal, so it kinda makes sense for that to happen.

PrometheusDarkflame

I mean, worst case you just get a shapeshifting power. It’s what I’d do. Still, so much better and easier than here.

Martin Tomsic

Jason went to Palli when he was 23, nearly 24. He spent 18 months there. Came back to Earth at 25. Jace was less than a year old, never specified Hana, just that she was very young and walking. At one point on Earth Farrah said that she had now spent more time there than Jason spent on Palli. That was shortly before the first transformation zone. At the end of the transformation zone, after Shako killed Jason, Jason talks with Dawn and they say it will be another 6 months before he leaves for Palli again. So that is just over 2 years, Jason is 27 when he leaves. A few weeks after Jason leaves Earth, the Purity people have the ritual that accidentally summons Taika, Travis, and everyone else from Earth. Travis says in the final chapters of last book that it has been 17 years since he left Earth. That puts the total at roughly 19 years since Jason got back to Earth the first time when Jace was less than a year old. Jason is 44, Jace is 19 going on 20, and Hana was at least 2 years older than her (apparently 4 years older making her 23).

Travis Lanier

You act like our governments wouldn't act exactly like that lol.

Martin Tomsic

I expect Shirt to have a big Asano barbecue to do all of the introductions. And I'm talking at least the size of the one that Soramir crashed. Fortunately there are no diamond rankers on Earth to do that this time.

2026-09-06 06:00 Jason is much more forgiving than I am. I like to think that I’d handle things better and be diplomatic. But I’m a know it all who stands on a moral high horse. I’m also constantly sarcastic, inappropriate, and extremely petty. Yeah no, I’d go full Dominion and pray for anyone who tried to stop me.

Martin Tomsic

Oooooo... And there are all those tunnels underground for hiding the biscuits too.

Jordan Rogers

Jason was on earth for approx 3 years when he came back. And was back on pallimustus for 18th the before the transformation zone , so a total of 6 years confirmed by shortaloon on a chapter i commented on forever ago. And I believe there has been several years since taikas comment about time.

Heather White

“fear mongering over magical gender transitions” Does anyone remember what this is a callback to? It’s a vague memory for me. (Edit: thanks for the help guys! The quote’s three comments below) Strikes me as absolutely hilarious that decades later we find out that magical gender transition fear mongering is exactly how Other Gordon came to power. Jason had no idea how well he called it.

Martin Tomsic

I wonder if Jason will turn on Nik's language filter so he can't swear, just in case.

David

Drink!

Josh

The diamond ranked who makes the cloud flasks?

StarkRG

Yeah, if there's normal, everyday adventuring to be done, Jason isn't going to be a part of it. Even Emi might almost be too advanced for normal adventuring. Then again, there isn't really normal adventuring work on Earth, it's mostly military engagements.

Ligeia

I think it was somewhere in book 8 or 9, talking to Emir, I think, about the person who made their cloud flasks, and how they like to change gender frequently. And Jason commented that magic would make it much easier. I think it was in Yaresh, before they went underground? Sorry I can't be more specific.

Heather White

My family runs an academy. On Earth.

StarkRG

Welcome to humanity. 95% of us are selfish, oblivious assholes, but at least we're somewhat short-lived.

Martin Tomsic

It would be fun to have Velius, Raythe, Carmen, or the new First Sister of the CWP show up as he is showing the Australians around his universe. Have him be like, "Hey, I think I've got guests. Let's pop up to my space station and see who it is." And then just fly them straight into space and in to the space station to meet his new house (soul?) guest.

Ligeia

I don't think Shirt has been quite as exact with the years and ages as you guys aee. He should probably hire you to set up a big chart for him with everything recorded down to the month or something!

StarkRG

I think he'd want to do family introductions in a more intimate setting. I also think it deserves it's own chapter (at least one). *Then* we can do the big Asano barbie.

Martin Tomsic

No, I thought Jason and his mother had made up by then end. She seemed glad to see him when he came back to the village to collect everyone for Dawn's gift from the Reaper. Now Jason's parents making up, that is a whole other matter. I don't think that is ever getting fixed.

Ligeia

@Jordan, Other Gordon already met Gordon when he objected to being OG back in book 4, and OG was VERY intimidated by the way Gordon advanced slowly and menacingly on him. What he did once he can do again, with sound effects this time, right?

Martin Tomsic

There are still the outer reaches of the astral spaces. Maybe Jason and Emi take a little journey just to show off for one another. Maybe even let all of the teams go off on their own in different directions to have a little safari adventure before getting out to see the rest of the Earth. Make a game of it to see who brings back the rarest ingredient for the welcome home barbecue!

Heather White

Thank you guys! Book 9, ch. 39, Emir & Jason talking about uncertainty whether the the cloud flask diamond ranker was currently he or she: “You have no idea how many people back where I come from would appreciate having magic to help them transition,” [Jason] said, then frowned. “Actually, that’s probably becoming more of an option now, which will be a giant political garbage fire. I bet they find some way to blame me.”

JustTheLad

I remember him talking about it in book 10 or 11 to Marek. About how it was probably causing an uproar or something

ABTelford

It’s…“Why I held back on the sappy reunions. I want the sap all over me, not the rubber guy you’re making time with.” ❤️❤️❤️ that whole conversation!!! ❤️❤️❤️

Daniel Storm

It's been mentioned a few times that the more you rank up, the more control you have over your physiology. Cause I mean, you're basically just a sack of magically deleciousness the closer you get to diamond. That's why they can change how they look more or less on a whim. Also I don't think it's you getting closer to your souls' ideal as much as it is just linked to the 'purification' aspect of rank ups.

Martin Tomsic

Yeah, this is all a huge power move. Jason is making his apologies in private and forcing Other Gordon to make a very big, very public apology for stealing from Jason and his clan. This puts Jason on an international stage being seen by the masses not as an independent person but as a foreign leader with equal standing to all of the super powers of the world. Though behind the scenes, in the places of power, everyone now knows that Jason is the only super power of the world.

Raves

I think there was a talk about becoming an outworlder correct any issues based on the souls identity, so removing diseases, regrowing missing limbs if it was still not viewed as a part of their identity. Also there is the fanfic set in the same world, MC even meeting Jason in that story, where they were a boy that always knew they were a girl got transported to Palli and when they came to as an outworlder they were biologically a Magical Girl

ABTelford

It’s book 10 or 11 when they talk about a gender changing diamond tanker - the one who made the cloud flask.

Chloe

"Not more important than this." Awe. I love that sentiment. Tyftc

Chloe

+1

AbyssalIceLord

Where the fuck did i say that? This is a fiction..i want fiction...not reality..if i wanted that id look outside or at you....

Martin Tomsic

There was also a conversation much earlier in the series than that about leaches being transgender. Some people on Earth think that transgender people will destroy the Earth and Colin is a transgender person that actually can destroy a planet. Maybe all the way back in book one? I can't remember.

AbyssalIceLord

And 100% of us are selfish everyone does something nice for something in return even if its only an endorphin rush

Jaq Thorne

Ditto, I recognize I'm basically book 1 Jason, but with less wit and less competence. I wouldn't have made it out of the cult mansion.

Heather White

Martin — yes, that sounds really familiar (pun seriously not intended)

Jaq Thorne

This is exactly how people act. Look at politics IRL. Look at world history. Look at all the people that deny scientific facts. People sticking their heads in the sand are the default. It's the ones that see the writing on the wall and act accordingly that are the exception.

Xiggurat

“he came to power through fearmongering over magical gender transitions during rank-up”. - I can’t believe Other Gordon somehow got even worse

Kconraw

Thx for the chapter. Hope more happens to OG other than insincere apology🤔

Chris Furry

He was gone 15 years, not 20 after the transformation zone.

JonO

@hornbach. Not if they're in Jason's "kingdom" aka his universe

JonO

Yup book 2 after getting blasted by the gods. He was talking to emir about Colin and how on earth people think transgender beings would bring about the end of the world (fear mongering) and that Colin is a transgender being that actually could

Kristoffer

Well in that case, Gordon's "I got this" would likely sound something like "ohh snacks, thanks"

JonO

The last solid time frame we received was by Travis noble a chapter or two ago at 17 years. Travis left earth shortly after Jason went back to palimustus. If you go from book 1 to now it's 20 to 22 years. The end of book 6 to beginning of book 12 is 15 years. Yumi gave us that number in the early chapters. So book 12 may have taken a total of 2 years to travel and bring everyone together.... which makes sense. So Hana and Jace were likely 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 years old by the time Jason went back to palimustus.

Kalanaere

Just imagine if he ever met the Cloud Ship maker. He'd flip

Kalanaere

He'll Jason has enough fine control he could alter his avatars to look like Emi if he wanted too. I could see him causing no end of grief though thst way

Kalanaere

Jason just casually crashing the meeting and eating lunch while the others are oblivious. It's just too good.

Shirtaloon

Jace was born after Jason went to the other world. She was an infant when he came back the first time.

Alex Schellenberg

That's exactly what I was thinking, the body coming more in line with the soul and transitioning being a natural aspect of it for some people.

Landsraad

Taking two evil spades to the face? Naw, just kill me. Lol

Chris Furry

Gods also use intrinsic mandate magic. It’s a transcendent thing.

CritHappens

Jason could just release the pirates back into the world with restrictions on who they can pillage. Basically anyone who isn’t on board.

Charlie Kennedy

It’ll anger her to her core!!! Good for her!

Addie

> magical gender transitions Sigh. Why can't magic be real?

James Rosado

He's gonna be the patron diety of theater kids and drama students in every universe

Addie

Even expected.

Kelly

So their third is off somewhere else then. *whew* I thought I was going crazy. 😂

StarkRG

@Collin No, a small portion of us do things because they're the right things to do and avoid doing things that are the wrong thing to do. It is a mistake to judge others based on your own motivations.

Taylor Hill

A satisfying conclusion to book 12 and a great start to 13. Thanks!

Andromeda Adams

What a great chapter, thank you! How many will go see Jason’s kingdom? When will Jason introduce Nik. So many things I’m excited to see!

EmmericH.

There was a fanfic with it happening to the MC but it was rewritten as it's own story now from what I have seen, sorry I couldn't find it for you but it's on royal road you might luck it out, I personally stopped because some of the main cast characters were a bit to much in the open romantic relationship thing with some sm fetish making me pretty uneasy every time it was mentioned as I'm more of a vanilla relationship myself, not judging, but it was not for me, the plot in itself was nice though

EmmericH.

And he probably didn't care enough to mask the smell 🤣

Brian Small

Judge Dredd Asano: I AM THE LAW OF PHYSICS!

JoeyRed

Gordon could ask Cullen, he only eats bad people so it seems legit.

Joanna

I’m sure that won’t come from any of the family though. A rabbit dude is just another blip on the radar when you’ve been living around elves, lion dudes and rock dudes for more than a decade. Out in the world though? Yeah that won’t go over well

AbyssalIceLord

Lol dude just please shut the fuck up with that. Im so sick of hearing that from people and seeing the opposite constantly. Just please...save it.

Frank Morgana

Can't wait for the family to meet Nik!

TechB

@Kalanaere I don't know. If Other Gordon met someone as strong as the CIoud Ship Maker, I get the feeling he'd kiss their a$$. I may be wrong but I think Other Gordon loves power. He doesn't care or believe in anything. So he says and does anything. ( Backroom deals, sell out his planet, etc) As long as it gets him a little more power, he's fine with it. So trying to befriend someone powerful... seems like he'll go for it. Then behind everyone's back, he'll leverage the connection for more power.

StarkRG

Amy and Kaito only ever had two kids.

Alex Schellenberg

Do we think Colin could take on forms other than Jason at Gold? I imagine a meeting with Colin and Other Gordon would be pretty good

Alex Schellenberg

Who's? I think Jason is using Dark, Blood, Sin and Doom. Sounds ominous but I'm thinking no one will point that out.

Alex Schellenberg

They have access to the same fundamental forces that Jason does. The only difference is he is unrestricted in how he can express them in his private universe. Plus most of them know how powerful Jason is, they spent 15 years fighting I his soul.

ByLAWphoto

I honestly keep flashing back to when he killed those "superheroes" with clockwork cores. she never even paused to ask, "hey, Jason--please tell me what happened. I know you're a good person, so there must be a reason that happened." NOPE. she just launched into how dare he scare her kid. I swear *I* got PTSD from reading that scene.

Caity O'Connell

Finally!! Get the village back!! Who cares if you destroy it and rebuild. The new one can be an embassy if he wants but those Japanese Asano’s need to learn their place!

Jordan Rogers

Things got wonky with those book 11 chapters and some mentions from the last few chapters. Of book 12

Greg

In the I like the glowey things toooo voice 🤣

Vonelmo

Gold rank gives him the ability to mergee with shades vehicle forms . So yeah Shade Gordon and Collin can become Voltron.

Attackins

WHAT. DID. I. FUCKING. SAY. ABOUT. AMY. "Wah wah we hope Amy is dead or evil because we're emotionally immature and also don't actually understand good narrative." Well she's not, and Jason is being extremely amicable with her. Is there a possible romance? I don't know, but if you don't think that jibed paragraph isn't hinting at a chance then I can't help y'all with your own reading comprehension.

Bryan Jackson

I suspect Jason's revenge on Other Gordon will be more along the lines of public humiliation and making him a social pariah. There has to be public redress for inviting the pirates in. That has much wider implications than just the laughable threat on Jason's life. I'm thinking some ironclad evidence of the conspiracy will find its way into the public conscious soon.

Kaelan Spears

Yeah, no. Jason is completely over her. She just somebody he used to know. He's only there for the nieces, really. Maybe if he spent a few years with them and wasn't with Zara, it could happen. But probably not

Joanna

Thanks for the lol, Alex

Eric Herrington

I'm not sure that's accurate about Clive never doing 3-D ritual circles (not quite a circle). What I'm thinking of is when Clive and Farah worked together to make big cages using ritual magic to hold the elemental messengers. It had to be enclosed around and above to keep them from flying off. I assume this is something along those lines and Emi controls the cubes creating the effect to lift them.

Hayden Leech

I totally want to see Zara dismiss Amy as a threat though. Would be funny to see. A once over, smirk. Walk away.

Heather White

How about turning it into a living museum? The Asanos could get the jump on that whole “the winners write history” thing. The existing buildings would become galleries devoted to different topics. They could tell the story of hidden magic before essence magic, the arrival of essence magic, and its development over the years on a magic-starved planet. They could have examples of the kinds of arrays the Network had to resort to when the magic was so low, and they could tell the story of how and why Asano Village was built. They could tell the history of the magic arms race as world superpowers hoarded magic for themselves and inhibited the development of strong magic elsewhere, and how France hid a stable astral space. There could be a whole building devoted to the history and relationship of the paired planets and another on the years when magic revealed itself and the world experienced the first monster waves and then the Vampire War. Spiritual domains and their formation out of transformation zones might even be included, explaining why they were a necessary side effect of Jason saving Earth from destruction. There could be a building explaining GABs and the astral throne (as told by the world-famous Clive Standish). One building could teach about the greater cosmos, its power structures, and Interstice. And, of course, there’d be a building devoted to The Great Betrayal, when a small group of power-hungry men and women put the entire world at risk in an attempt to cling to power (featuring exclusive crystal recordings of the pirates’ leader explaining what they had planned to do after killing Jason). And a building on 1980’s tv culture, explaining Tom Sellecks’s mustache, the best Voltron, and how Team Knight Rider nearly destroyed the world. All of the secrets the powerful would love to hide, out in the open. The whole story of Earth’s magic told from the Asanos’ perspective, endorsed by Jason. Maybe there could even be workshops or activities, like one that would teach people how to do a very simple ritual. Maybe the one from the Boko crisis that cooled people off in the desert. Of course, there’d be a restaurant featuring some of Erika’s most famous dishes (with reruns of Beachside Kitchen playing on one of the walls), and a gift shop selling tons of dragon and turtle plushies and t-shirts that said, “I went to a magical alternate universe and all I got were great cosmic powers.” And Dash of Stash, an exclusive boutique brand of dragon biscuits. It would be a world-renowned tourist stop for those making the pilgrimage to the the famous beachside town where the god-king Jason Asano was born.

Philipp Battenberg

Already? Yay! Chapters at midnight instead of 1 AM. And end of Octobre it's 11PM! That will make my sleep cycle far healthier.

Maudley

@TechB Jason set it up so that was the best they could possibly plan: golds way better than anything Earth has (and won't really have access to anymore especially if outsiders look into what happened to the last guys), wildly outnumbering him, with far better gear than even Jason had, and Jason took it solo, then invited his team in which broke them immediately, with an unknown force in reserve. The results? Jason stronger than ever since he's looted the pirates, fully aware of who acted against him, threatening, but willing to forgive. If he was the kind of person who held a grudge over that, and wiped them out, he'd not only be a tyrant but actively encourage remaining factions to band together and try to deal with him together, as it'd only be a matter of time before they did something he saw as a slight. This way, the smarter of his enemies recognize that they dodged a bullet, and will feed him the stupider of his enemies on a platter if they threaten to bring more trouble. There's that, but mainly there IS no better they can do.

Tim

You dont think he's being amicable because they used to be best friends and shes the mother of his DEAD BROTHERS CHILDREN?! Nah, clearly he's back to hit that. He'll NEVER get back with Amy. But that doesnt mean they cant work at rebuilding a PART of their friendship, for Kai's, and his nieces' sake.

Tim

Lol i think you MIGHT have gone crazy. What number 3 are you talking about?

Tim

@Kenneth lmao, same..ida probably ended up in the larder.

ONEsie

The Asano Village resolution is a huge letdown.

Ligeia

I love your idea, @Heather! You've thought out every detail -- that would be a brilliant tourist stop after Earth teaches Pallimustus (and, later, other universes in the cosmos) about tourism!

Razeel Nightfall

So is there going to be zero comeuppance for the factions of earth? Gov took his land, bushes it off. Gov gave town to the nonlaws, oh well I can build better. ... WTactualF.

Razeel Nightfall

Emotional Damage = Jason/Amy. I don't, in any way or from, wish to see a romantic relationship between these two. My goodness if you want 63 chapters of side story, go reread the last book.

Razeel Nightfall

It could become a yearly pilgrimage for his cult. I would love to read a story of cult members showing up some 100-200 years down the road. It would be even more of a hoot if they had actual brands of team biscuit on their skin. Talk about misunderstanding branding licenses.

Myzifer

I do wish the real world politics weren't included, it breaks the immersion of reading fantasy.

Martin Tomsic

@TechB - I think you are 100% correct about Other Gordon and his thirst for power and attention. But imagine Cloudweaver revealing themself to Other Gordon AFTER a fearmongering rally speech.

Dustyn Sawall

No, I said it before and I'll say it again. Other Gordon's going to have to deal with the storm kingdoms diplomats. Probably even Zara. He's toast.

Martin Tomsic

@Eric - Clive and Farrah used magic to make a cage out of 2-D circles. Emi was actually using spherical magic diagrams.

Alex Schellenberg

I don't think Jason would have let his familiar become vehicle voltron.

BloodStorm

I disagree. You have a delegation from the storm kingdom coming to meet the world powers of earth. You have ice cube as the vice president of the USA. Jason just upset several political powers by denying the system over slavery. You don’t have any current real life politicians in the story. Literally 70% of this story has been Jason getting tangled up with local political powers in one way or the other.

BloodStorm

The whole moral of the series is Jason trying to not become the literal or metaphorical “monster” he hates. I see him burning it to the ground. Other than trying to get other Gordon out of office. What would you want him to do? Kill everyone in the Australian government?

Myzifer

Not politicians, politics in general. It brings you out of immersing yourself in a fantasy world to read political topics, especially since the default conclusion is they're added to signal 1 alignment or virtue, at the expense of the other with the possibility of the story suffering to meet the needs of whatever point/issue.

Kevin Anderson

I can't believe that he didn't bring nik with him this chapter

Kevin Anderson

Was Amy's rank left out on purpose? Did she go the cores or monsters route?

Heather White

While I understand your desire to be transported away from our grueling reality, since books 4-6 this story has consistently, explicitly been rooted in the politics of modern Earth. Remember Jason’s crack in book 4 about how clearly the Americans’ president hadn’t been informed about magic because he hadn’t tweeted about it (hello, Trump)? The idea that HWFwM’s humanity would behave differently from the real 21st century is unrealistic. This isn’t a Tolkien-esque story of elves and dwarves. For at least 9 books now (4-12), Jason’s Earth has been set in thinly veiled 21st century human politics.

Aaron Van Wormer

I really wish that last battle was longer…..

ByLAWphoto

@BloodStorm--I agree: Jason is trying SO hard to be better. He has been attacked for decades. He deserves peace. That said, since you asked, YES, I want him to kill all the stupid bastards that are choking the world. It would bring ME a sense of peace.

ByLAWphoto

I have to own to being impatient now that we're on Earth. Bring out the tourists! Let's get this going! Let Farrah and Travis take over the social media message. Slice 'n' dice some corrupt governments ! Shred some vampires! Bring on the magic ship exploration !

Eric

Other Gordon is dumb enough he might force Jason into it, even though he’s trying to be better there’s only so far he’ll accept being pushed. Some others are going to get spanked though. Like all of vampire infested Europe. And whichever lackey China or the US throws at him. And whatever threat Boris/dawn/mr north are expecting.

Martin Tomsic

Way to gloat over something a lot of people were predicting would happen. And no, there is no chance of them getting back together and there was no hinting at a chance of it in that paragraph you point to. The paragraph basically says they are total strangers now that have a bittersweet history that will never be returned to. There is a lot that ties them together, but some of those ties are barbed wire.

Martin Tomsic

I would've never made it to the larder, the snake would have eaten me. I'd be too freaked over accidentally killing Landemeer and never made it out of the room.

sjmcc13

Jason can wait and see how they react, but I am half hoping he cuts off access to the system in those nations, with the message stating the names from the list as responsible. Let the people remove their problems.

sjmcc13

They get to add features like weapons not robot modes. Well maybe single vehicle robot modes akin to Transformers.

Jarrett Glass

I agree — we only ever heard about his relationship with Emi, I literally forgot he had two whole other nieces

Martin Tomsic

@StarkRG - You're probably right. I'm trying to think who would be invited for that. Would it be just Emi, Erica, and Ian so that Nik doesn't get overwhelmed? Or do they just bring in the whole immediate family that was introduced to magic before Jason went on his solo wanderings?

Jake

I hope we get more slice of life stuff, feeling like the story is rushing through a lot of that recently

Martin Tomsic

Thinking on it more, I'm really glad that we didn't get any in depth view of Emi and Jason. The tackle-hug was the only thing needed. How much talking would they have really done in that first meeting. I actually imagine if anything it was along the lines of, "There is so much I want to show you and tell you and I promise I'll give you a whole week of uninterrupted annoying uncle time, but first there are a lot of things that need to get done and I'm going to need your help. But I wanted to make sure that you were the first person I saw as soon as I got the chance."

Martin Tomsic

@David - No, Amy most likely didn't spy on him and his mother definitely didn't. It was even said in the Earth arc that people tried approaching Amy and Kaito, among several other people staying at Asano Village, about spying for them, they agreed, and then immediately told the family about it. And who would Amy have spied for? The people that murdered her husband??? Her problem was with Jason personally and his having all that power, she wouldn't have betrayed the rest of her family though. And Jason's mother had already made up with Jason and was on good turns with him even before the first transformation zone. She was happy to see him when they went back to the village for the wake for Asya, Kaito, and Greg. Half the reason he went to his mother's place was because they had made up and he trusted her.

NethanielShade

Guys by him complaining about “not politicians, politics in general” it’s code for “I’m offended that the bad evil Prime Minister was hinted at being conservative”

Diviknight

I wonder if Jason’s plan is to show Sol his “kingdom” so he can help the leaders of earth realize Jason isn’t there to conquer the world because he doesn’t need their countries or their planet. Jason has said before that Earth isn’t really home anymore.

Myzifer

There are plenty of ways to write about political topics in a stereotypical manner that wouldn't involve real life political topics, for example religion or capitalism, both of which Travis has done in the books too. Unlike moonlitshades opinion that it's only about conservative issues. I recently caught up with the story by reading book 11 and now 12, where I noticed an increase in inserted politics, even outside of earth based discussions. We're surrounded by enough politics in real life, with 1 group or another telling us what's right or wrong, all the while being hypocrites themselves while pretending to be the virtuous. It's why I choose not to vote, since none of the politicians stick to their professed morals or stance. Hence my desire for Travis to avoid bringing real life politics into his story. It's not needed and distracts from the core story.

Greg Lewis

I'm doing yet another reread. 150 ish outworlders just showed up. On the scale of important events that trumps anything. Yet the rimaros family didn't care. They chose to be selfish and abuse Jason for their own advancement. In their own words they stated that they knew it would cause him trouble but they desperately wanted the chance to ride his coattails. They are barely less evil than the network yet give them a pass. Why? We had a book or two of them putting Jason through the ringer to the point of him having a mental breakdown. Why are people okay with this family? This includes liara and yes, Zara. Seriously, how does the fan base dislike the network but are okay with the rimaros family?

Joanna

She was definitely cores, no time or interest in monster fighting when she had two little ones to raise

Myzifer

Actually, it's not code for anything other than what I said it was. In this case I have a friend who detransitioned and then received an incredible amount of hate from their community and some of their friends. So it reminds me of my friend when I hear about similar topics, which in recent years have been used and abused by all political sides. Hence my desire for real life politics not to be included in a fantasy or fictional setting.

Johnny Echeverria

OH MY GOD is it possible that the astral space back in greenstone could’ve been the builders astral kingdom? Cause odds are they chose an astral king to become a great astral being and what would happen to said kingdom???

Hornbach

No because there is no way to Break into an Astral Kingdom, also it was way to small, also the reaper would not put his Secret Order in the stral Kingdom of the builder, also the whole builder Invasion was the builders attempt to become something resembling an Astral king.

Johnny Echeverria

Except it doesn’t make sense for a random diamond rank messenger to be chosen since he would be serving some astral king I still think the builder should have been an astral king since from Jason’s experience we know there’s an actual cross over between the responsibilities of an astral king and that of the builder

Johnny Echeverria

Plus wouldn’t it make sense narratively if the builder missed having his own planet his own kingdoms and simply wished to have that once again. The astral city may not be his but it may be something once tied to it

Liy

A common theme in this series is people in power abusing it to benefit themselves. Even Jason does this, and tries to learn from it. I think the Rimaros family are decent people despite what they put Jason through, and ultimately they were looking for the best solution for all of their people, not just the royal family. Jason just wasn't one of their people. And they threw Zara under the bus, too. But Liara and Soromir have both done things for Jason to make up for what they put him through. And I actually don't think Zara did anything wrong, there. She inconvenienced some people, but her intentions were noble and not selfish. I also believe she genuinely liked Jason and did grieve his death, and likely got the engagement idea from Jason, since he did sorta propose according to some cultures. She made a political mistake, not a moral one. She had no way of knowing Jason was still alive.

Ataiatek

Longer fights make op characters weak look at one piece manga vs anime. Heck and long running anime vs it's manga. The point is Jason is so powerful he could likely have ended that first fight much succinctly either with the power of friendship or his personal assets. He chose the slow route which in turn was short.

Ataiatek

@myzifer You invested in the wrong story mate

Myzifer

How so? Since 99.99% of it has been fine and all I wish is for needless politics not be included.

Erik Loukota

It wasn't random, the builders messenger name (I forget the spelling) was brought up by Boras as one of the greats that had potential to change the cosmos. The Great Astral Beings chose him and he broke under their pressure becoming The Builder.

Bryan Jackson

No. I had this thought briefly a while back, but it's impossible for several reasons, the most important being that astral kingdoms are the reforged souls of the astral kings they belong to, and are thus inseparable from them.

Kaelan Spears

Shade can turn into creature forms as well, so he could do original voltron

StarkRG

I'd start with them, his dad too, probably Yumi, *maybe* his mum. Once Nik's comfortable with them, bring in Hiro, Amy and her kids. Then do the big reveal.

JennP

I wasn't OK with most of the Rimaros family, but I hate them less than the Network because they didn't actively try to kill Jason over and over, and over, like the Network did. The Rimaros are pricks, the Network are cockroachs. Evil little bastards that should be squashed for the betterment of Earth. The Rimaros need to be beat up a little. And Jason should ignore Soramir, deny him any benefit.

JennP

Dude, when shirt did slice of life people complained and called it "filler"

Benjamin Grant

I just thought about this now but Jason is kind of acting like The Emperor of Mankind he is an all powerful being who defies the common sense of the universe who is willing to do whatever it takes while everyone around him keeps telling him he is a hero and such but internally he thinks that nobody should look up to him and I believe he said it to the leader of the council of kings that he would burn his civilization to the ground to which Farrah remarks Jason did you just causally declare a holy war. Which is something the Emperor of Mankind did

Bettafish

So.... which dunce is gonna completely ignore the warning signs and try somthing stupid anyway? The Chinese network has been quiet recently, Japanese Asanos still haven't recovered the brain cells they lost from those car bombs way back when... America's also always down to shoot things.

Martin Tomsic

-- The astral space for the Reaper trials was one of the Builder's dimensional city ships that he created, like the one's that attack Palli in book 7. -- You can't steal an astral kingdom or remove it from an Astral King because that is literally their soul. -- The Builder was trying to be something more (in his mind) than a god, Astral King, or GAB. He wanted to be the singular supreme being with total control over all aspects of a universe (that was not contained within his soul) and be worshipped by every sapient being of every planet therein. -- Diamond rank Messengers are strong enough to throw off the branding from an AK and are not dependent on them for anything. They just frequently work with/for them in order to hopefully learn new secrets and become AKs themselves. (or that's the way I've interpreted it) -- In the epilogues of book 3, the WP and Reaper mentioned that the Builder was chosen for his role, but the Builder retorted that he TOOK the power himself and that it wasn't just given to him. -- The job didn't "break" the Builder, the other GABs made him eat some very bad terms to hold the position since he wasn't a part of the pact that the original Builder was after the Sundering. -- The current Builder's original name as a Messenger was Zithis Caro Vayel, or something close to that

Scott Martinis

he's being mature and trying to avoid killing everyone

Martin Tomsic

Yeah, I don't think 150 outworlders on another continent trumps protecting millions of citizens (at the least) in their kingdom and surrounding areas from the largest monster surge in history and an alien invasion on top of it. Fine, hate Soramir and the royal family for trying to take advantage of a situation that they were stuck in. But they were FAR from the worst individuals, organization, or nation that tried to get something out of Jason. I'm not sure they make top 5 in any of those categories.

Martin Tomsic

You do realize that early in the very first book Jason points out that he was going to be a poli-sci major? And also that he was very forthcoming about his political stances throughout the ENTIRE series? Also that he is exactly what you just ranted about the problems in politics being? It's kind of ridiculous to complain at the start of the 13th book about things that have been going on in the previous 12 books. Dealing in politics is one of Jason's core "things". If you think "real world politics" breaks your immersion, then how have you been around this long?

Martin Tomsic

If Shade has enough bodies Jason could probably have him turn into Godzilla and use Gordon's beams as his breath attack. The original movies were in black and white, so he can go with that color instead of complaining about him being green.

Gavin Wayne Pitcher

For sure Gordon, teamed up with a hard headed japanese asano clan. Pretty sure Jason is going to permenantly atomize their gold rank armor that will likely be their 'ace in the hole'.

BloodStorm

What ever happened to Jason’s fan boy Itsuki Tiwari?

StarkRG

The Tiwari clan exiles moved to Asano village and then to the European spirit domains, so I assume he's still there. At this point, he's probably pushing close to Gold (probably hasn't made it there yet, though, it's only been something like 17 years since we saw him and he was still Bronze then).

Myzifer

As I already mentioned, most things have been fine as they've just been generic political stances, issues against greed or power. The sort of stuff that would exist anywhere and everywhere. Hence being able to still enjoy 12 full books. But it seems like you can't fathom that a reader could have desires for the story to change in subtle ways, if in this case to remain true to its origin, a fantasy story. Is it really a stretch for me to want it to remain a fantasy? Do I truly expect a change, no. But I can still share my desire in a wish, especially after noticing an increase in the use of real life political topics, hence only mentioning it now. I read books 1-10 with barely a mention found, then caught up with 11 and 12 recently to see it being more prevalent. So shared my desire, just have others have discussed various other topics on here and discord. It's not even like I've not seen it done before, I've read plenty of sci-fi fantasy books over the years and seen copious examples of politics without it touching on the real world. Heck even alternative history, where things are close but always at a remove. End of the day, we're all free to express our opinions and this in mine.

Martin Tomsic

I guess you managed to skip the fact that people fearmongering over transgender people was discussed at least twice before in the book. There were direct references to other real world politics and politicians spread about. Heck, one of the recurring jokes in the series is about Trump. And I guess the part in book 5 where the real world concentration camps in China didn't bother you either. Maybe the comment about some organization coming down on people like the US military on oil rich nations. I could go on for a while, but I think you get my point. To whine about this last one (which wasn't the first time the topic was discussed) and ignore the rest of it all is just ridiculous.

Myzifer

It doesn't seem like you're reading or understanding what I've said. I indicated I have previously noticed certain topics popping up, but that recently there has been an uptick. So instead of seeing maybe a single occurrence every few books or even per book, it's becoming multiple per book. Hence sharing my desire now. I hope this clears things up. Plus it's not even like I'm asking for the story to be changed, it's in fact the opposite.

Darren Williams

Okay, I *need* to know what Emi's rubix cubes actually do. Are they an essence ability? I kind of got the sense that they are a magic item she crafted.

Charlie Kennedy

I do believe she crafted them. Remember she was tinkering with just one a while back. She seems to have mastered them.

Greg

It's not over till the papers are signed. I like the idea that old Asano village is all they get and they're refused all the new shiney stuff Jason's bringing to earth.

Greg

Good political decisions take time. So does good, thorough, devastating, comeuppance.

StarkRG

From the description, I'm guessing they're interacting formations, the field of magical research she said she wanted to specialise in. As for what they do, I'm certainly looking forward to finding out and seeing them in proper action.

Philip Pleiss

I am really curious what his arrival looked like from the perspective of all the long range media drones that were monitoring his arrival. Heck, Terrance even roped some influencers into it.

Joanna

For me, the reason I feel mostly okay with them (along with good points others already made) is that once it was made clear to them how much distress Jason was really in, they changed their behavior. Yeah they did some kinda shitty stuff at first (using him as bait without his knowledge or consent is first and worst, even though they were there to ‘protect’ him) but when their understanding of the situation changed, so did their behavior. For me that moves them from villains to imperfect people trying more or less to do their best

Joanna

Someone’s always going to complain. Personally I also really enjoy the slice of life stuff. I think Shirt does it very well

GentlemanG33k

My guess would be that each cube face can spin and can make differnt rituals by substituting different parts or the ritual diagram

GentlemanG33k

I would have liked to see Jota's perspective when the cloudship showed up I want to know if it was as his opinion of the ship itself not Jason's connection to it

Martin Tomsic

I love the slice of life stuff because that is where Shirt really shows the depth of his characters. If it was all action and adventure, then we'd only see a narrow picture of what everyone is like.

Frederick

That would probably be more widely accepted than the destructive and incomplete operations available today.

Addie

Hey. Trans healthcare is not destructive. Trans people are not "destroyed". Take that kind of talk back to 4chan.

Joanna

I’ve wondered about where that armor ended up. Shiro’s younger daughter, Mei, put it in her dimensional storage space, and she ended up going over to Jason pretty soon after, so I have a feeling Noriko never actually got her hands on it

Martin Tomsic

I hope that Mei managed to hold onto the armor and bring it with her when they left to join Jason. Unfortunately it was probably put into some sort of family vault at their compound right after they received it from Jason. But I'm really hoping that Asano Shiro or Akari are using it now that they are gold. (Akari hasn't been confirmed, but I'm assuming she is)

Frederick

Woah, careful! You're getting angry about something I didn't say. Read more carefully. Not "trans healthcare," the related surgeries. With current medicine, gender transitions 1) leave scar tissue 2) are impossible to completely reverse 3) sterilize the patient. This may be what is best for the patient, but it is still destructive.

Addie

Thanks for explaining how I failed to understand the very clear message you wrote. For someone who "didn't say that" you've gone on to do exactly what I said you did again. Transphobia isn't really welcome on Patreon, and I doubt Shirt enjoys it being wielded like a cudgel on his posts either. Keep liking your own comments though.

Frederick

*Sigh* Are you trolling me? Did you read my post? You didn't respond to the facts I listed. It is not transphobic to understand the limits of modern medicine.

Frederick

Please keep in mind that gender transition surgery will not become more complete unless someone is willing to recognize where it fails today so they can improve on it. It actively harms the trans community to shout down those of us who recognize this.

Addie

You're literally repeating gender critical talking points. You're a transphobe.

Frederick

Now I'm convinced you're trolling me, but I'll play along because I'm curious... and slightly amused. You initially posted --- ‣ magical gender transitions Sigh. Why can't magic be real? --- Why would magical gender transitions be better than what modern medicine can do?

Addie

Damnit i keep accidentally deleting my replies when I go to make them even better. I think the gist of it though is you need to shut the fuck up cis man. And stop liking your own posts. Zero is the correct number of likes for you.

P K

"I'm not asking the story to change, just the opposite" You're lying to yourself if you honestly believe this.. Delulu Not surprising considering how you're only talking about this now, event though the entire books series has been political since book one, including feminism in the red table but because "muh, my stupid af political alignment was SLIGHTLY portrayed correctly in a bad light, I'm gonna go cry about it now!!, Why can't writers just keep it super simple like bed time stories so I don't have to see my own belief system challenged even slightly or protested negatively" Bro, this entire current segment of the story arc is all about Jason improving his diplomacy and not just using force to get what he wants, its not just physically fights and as you already know from the The entire Series, he's always been fighting politicians, political schemes You cry now at the slightest, a sliver, a crumble of "my immersion is broken because I correclated this evil fiction character with an evil nonfiction character and that made my brain hurt myself and didn't like it" You're straight up asking him to change the entire plot of the story. Politics have been here from book one, sorry the villain bad guy made you think of your irl alignment" hope you grow from the experience of these different opinions you seem to say you can share, but demanded the author of a series you weren't forced to pick up, should change their writting to make you more comfortable and not have to deal with your self

P K

Like you read 12 entire books involving politics, then you read about one of many fictional bad guy politicians but because he's hinted at being conservative makes you go "wait political ideology could never be bad guy ever, even in a fantasy world as a minor side character, my side could never be in the wrong ever!!, I'm gonna go ask him to remove all 12 books of politics, stop doing anymore written of politics and then blatantly ignore that current story arc is specifically about politics on Earth and how Asano handles them. Then you make the claim you're not asking the author to change anything is just such a blur in mental gymnastics to avoid any irl reflection that doesn't support your ideals even in a fantasy novel hurts your brain and takes you out the story, sounds like a real personal problem Why you other Gordon supporters always gotta be so weird

Myzifer

Believe what you want if it makes you feel better and allows you to justify insults and being rude. As I've already explained, I noticed an uptike so casually mentioned my desire. Which no, does not change the whole plot of the story, since A the story is not non-fiction and B isn't even set in the same time period, not to mention C I've seen and read plenty of other books/content which has been set in modern times, plus a real world situation and avoided present day world politics. Taking it out would mean what, we have politics fighting over power and wealth, oh wait that's the story right now, snap no change at all. It's like obscure references, some people understand them and others don't, so are left wondering what's going on. I've got plenty of pop culture references, while missing others and being left thinking if I should look it up or just continue reading. It's a balancing act with authors and readers, the more real world references throw in the more chances that people won't understand, or could get distracted. Or if you understand every reference and nothing is a distraction, good on you. It's not me and I know it's the same for others, based off any culture or political reference film/series/book that has come out. I'll just leave this, with notice how I phrased my original comment, short, simple, non-offensive? Then notice majority of replies and the negative behaviour they included. The only exception being from bloodstorm, who while misunderstanding my point, decided to voice a disagreement with their pov on the matter in a calm manner.

P K

Another comment said it's not anime levels of forgiveness but I have to say, it really is... If Jason doesn't kill most if not all of them or equal reprimand to hmm, taking his families lands, torturing Farah, killing innocents, stoping him from saving innocents, multiple backstabing, killing his brother/lover/friend, more attempts of killing him or his family, and now inviting an alien mercenary group to kill him the moment he comes back home, who will then pillage the planet???!?!? There is a place for forgiveness, this isn't it. If they truly get off this easy, and Jason of all people does it this willingly, keeping the people that killed his family and sold the planet to kill them again alive?? Highest point of fantasy writing has been meet, character development went so far a name change should be implemented. Amazing 12 books, loved the story 🎉 Congratulations!!! ,🎉 Tftc!

Valmorian

a great chapter! so much emotional so much character growth. he's gotten pretty strong not to fill the hole town with bodies.

Aristeidis Tsialos

They sound like modular ritual formations. Different permutations of the cubes correspond to different rituals giving her versatility.

Diego Rossi

You are mixing things that the Otehr Gordon and the Japan Asano Clan did with what other groups and subgroups did. For some of those things he already got revenge. 1) taking his families lands - the issue which they are discussing, so, not a forgotten issue; 2) torturing Farah - French Network. Most people are dead, including all the heads of that branch of the Network; 3) killing innocents, stoping him from saving innocents - He should murder 1/3 of the planet's population? Because one way or another, at least so many are in some way involved in murdering innocents or stopping him from saving innocents. Or are you thinking of some specific "innocent"? 4) multiple backstabing - He has dealt with some of the people that did the worse of that. If he want to deal with all the people involved, he would have to kill hundreds of thousands if not millions of people, included a large percentage of the people that are needed to keep the monsters down. 5) killing his brother/lover/friend - From what I recall, the perpetrators are dead. Probably there are still accomplices around but reaching them probably will require killing a lot of innocent people. 6) more attempts of killing him or his family - as 4). 7) Inviting an alien mercenary group to kill him the moment he comes back home, who will then pillage the planet - He is dealing with that now, so neither forgot nor forgiven.

Diego Rossi

Considering real-life China and the longevity of essence users, there are good chances that they will say: "Let's accept a of loss of face and throw some guy under Jason's bus, even some important guy. Then wait a century and see how it goes. The important thing is not losing too much, there is always time to win." China has a tendency to go for long-term goals, not short-term advantages. Look at how they worked for decades in gaining control of most of the rare earths production.

P K

While you have made good points, my main emotion / logic behind this is simple Jason isn't dumb enough and nothing so far to show he is naive enough to let these types of people off. Yes he is powerful enough not to be harmed himself, but others aren't. He is not or should say was not, the type of person that would let these people go, knowing full well they'd hurt others again. He's not batman, and I believe it'd be character suicide to turn him into him. Like I said, not all of them deserve death, but some deff do, and if he wants to not kill, sure fine. But he needs to do something where it's 100% as long as he's around (that being 4eva now) they won't be able to hurt again. Other Gordon deff is close, willing to risk his country with a bomb that could kill many. The government leaders that sent the gold ranker that caused him to lose his brother, friend, & lover are probably the same people that were behind/ in charge of hiring the aliens. Those perps are definitely not all taken care of

Diego Rossi

Jason needs to deal with the problem people. Going on a killing spree is a way to do that, but that will do more harm than good. Making them inconsequential will require work, but will work better. Other Gordon lives on rising fears and exploiting the limits of "We are a democracy, so who is elected command." OG needs the more moderate and less morally bankrupt people to show an acceptable face for his government, but those people will not keep floating his sinking ship after his idiocy and malice become common knowledge. The power dynamics of Jason's world are changing and most "old style" demagogues will discover that their methods are not up to date.

Tierza Hitch

Why is the first chapter of book 13 here in the book 12 collection?

Adamantinus

FYI, this chapter is NOT part of the Book 13 collection: 9 June 2025 Just finished bk 12 on audible...the 1st chapter of the next book probaly needs to be in there ;) Take care of yourself first though :)

Kristy Riedel

We are told in the books somewhere that the new builder was a sixteen year old diamond ranker whom the GABs raised to the role. He was not an astral king. This is supported by the fact that he is trying to manually build an astral kingdom, which he would not need to do had he already been an astral king when selected.

Kristy Riedel

Also, he let the pirates show their strength to the world. The world recognized that all of their gold rankers would have died immediately against the pirates. That Jason didn't die was a show of his power, it's called subtlety.

Kristy Riedel

I think if you want fantasy with no real world politics, then a story about a modern human from earth should be one you leave on the shelf. Shirt is obviously a deep thinker on many issues, which is reflected in his writing, and which makes his fans love his stories. I don't have to agree with his every opinion to be completely engrossed with his writing. When I don't want to think about real world issues, I read books that aren't about a real world. HWFWM is all about the real world coming into contact with a magical one, which I find a fascinating way of reframing issues. It's fun to imagine our real world with magic and ponder how that would change our culture. I would be disappointed if that was missing or removed from these books, since that is basically the premise of the series.

Kristy Riedel

@Frederick. I understand what you meant. All you advocated for were advancements in care that would allow for full functionality (including fertility), and no scars to tell the tale. You are advocating for the transition to be complete and undetectable so they can live as they wish without having to explain to every partner what the scars are from and why they can't have children without medical intervention. You were agreeing with your troll that magical transition is better, while recognizing that magic isn't real. You are not losing your mind, you are an ally, not the enemy.

Myzifer

You should read my last reply, it addresses your response already. But in summary I disagree.

Kristy Riedel

@TechB. The more you describe other Gordon, the more I recognize him. smh

Elidyr

ok...Now I'm confused. Book 12 ended (as far as I can remember) with Jason appearing on a sidewalk outside a business as Emi walks out of the door and he says "Hi...whatever her nickname was". How did we get from there to the rooftop at the family home??? Also...is there a way to see previous chapters? I just signed up a few minutes ago.

Kristy Riedel

Chapters come down when they go for publishing, so all you can read here are the works in progress ( book 13). The end of the last book was him getting to France and greeting his favorite family member. This chapter is the next scene where said family member has gone to fetch others for a reunion. Normal step forward in action because we don't read every single minute of Jason's life. I would've liked more of his reunion with Emmy, but the violent hug was enough to be going on with.

Brandon Walker

Rereading this chapter after the break, really reinforces my hatred of this one dynamic, I don't mind characters doing bad things or making bad calls, but the pretending his being so messed up wasn't largely because of having no support, and a lot of the things he did they hated boiled down to "people are going to kill them, and he stops them" or "using his mind to kill people rather than his horrible slow death torture powers" really bothers me, sure he was messed up and got PTSD, largely because he had no support, his family had to choose between trusting their family member, or the people sending hitmen after them, and the picked the hitmen, and the reunion stuff REALLY reads as victim blaming, and saying it's acceptable to cut someone off because they are going through a hard time, and that you shouldn't NEED to trust the closest people to you in your life, and I hate that

Kristy Riedel

Would "Secretary of the Department of Prime Minister & Cabinet" be like the White House Chief of Staff?

Kristy Riedel

Yes, but...the one victim blaming is Jason himself, not his sister who is acknowledging that she should have supported him better.

Kristy Riedel

There is a huge difference between Jason's mom being present and treating Jason poorly, and Jason being unavoidably absent while leaving Nik in good hands. Even if Jason hadn't agreed to repair the sundered throne, he had to complete his transition to astral king which would also have taken years.
