TL;DR:

I just appeared on a litRPG podcast.

Assistaloon is back.

Book 10 chapters (699-790) coming down next month.

Break schedule for 2023/24.

December 2023: break (rest and Christmas).

March 2024: possible short break (work event).

April 2024: break (family vacation).

August/September 2024: TBD-length break (Dragon Con).

December 2024: break (rest and Christmas).

I just made an appearance on the CritRPG podcast, which has also featured other litRPG luminaries like Zogarth of Primal Hunter fame. The camera angle for me is a bit odd because it's hard to position a webcam when you're using a huge TV as a monitor. I also look sleepy because I was. My assistant has returned from Canada. I make no promises regarding an improvement in proof reading other than I will now be blaming him for all mistakes. I sent him the latest chapter and the slacker was asleep, just because it was 2am. Weak.

The book ten chapters (699-790) will be coming down around the 14th of November, in readiness for publication. Book 10 releases on November 28th and there might be a promotional event or two around the launch.

Break schedule for 2023/24:

Not everything is finalised yet, but here is the basic breakdown:

December 2023: break (rest and Christmas). Nothing special here, just visiting family at Christmas and trying to get some writing done while I'm not under the gun with deadlines, recovering from burnout or roaming around the USA. Having advanced chapters makes for more relaxed Shirt, which makes for better writing. It also means that I can maybe - maybe - have chapters coming out when I have to take short breaks for work events or when I visit my mum. No promises.

March 2024: possible short break (work event). I may or may not be on a panel at SXSW in Austin, Texas, in early-to-mid March. I may or may not have enough chapters to cover my absence.

April 2024: break (family vacation). I will be taking a rest, restocking the (hopefully still existing) chapter buffer and then taking a family vacation. I'm bringing my nieces and nephew to Disney World. Their parents as well; I'm not kidnapping the kids. I do not have time in my life to deal with all that.

August/September 2024: TBD-length break (Dragon Con). After a brief appearance this year, I'll be at Dragon Con for full duration next year. Coming from Australia means two days of travel on either side of that from Australia, so I'm not sure how much time I'll be taking off for that one. It's possible I queue up chapters through August, take all of September off and restock the chapter buffer again. I'll decide closer to the date.

December 2024: break (rest and Christmas). I'll probably always be taking December off from now on.

You know, back when you first made the poll saying you were planning on taking 3 months off each year, back when you were posting 5 days/week, I made the argument that posting 3 days/week would be the same volume as posting 5 days/week and taking off 3 months of the year. Implicit in that argument was that posting 3 days/week would allow you to *not* take off 3 months per year. Yet here you’re now stating you’re still going to be doing that. So, I really have to admit, I’m definitely feeling like you’ve subjected us to a massive bait and switch. I’m glad you’re not burning out as much anymore, but I feel like you’re still falling into the same patterns where you end up with much less buffer chapters than you need to sustain things.

Booo to be honest I don’t mind it feels like the story is reaching the end of the build up and then all we have left is the finale and even if it takes long I don’t want the story to end and part of the reason shirt said he was doing three days is that he’s planning a new series so let the man cook

You should enlist Mum and the kids! They can help you buffer. Besides, a story of Jason in Disneyland and getting into.a knife fight with The Beast sounds entertaining. As for Assistaloon; remember he traveled into that Mystical Transcendent Paradise called Canada. Being forced back to mortal realm is hard.

While your decisions are understandable from a human perspective, as a reader/customer I'm personally feeling increasingly frustrated with the addition of more month-long breaks coupled with the decreased posting schedule. Especially since September and December are so close to each other and for many people, me included, this period being the heaviest part of the year and subsequently the one benefiting the most from escapism. Might I suggest perhaps longer breaks during the summer to build a backlog for an uninterrupted Autumn/Winter release schedule?

Quick math says that book 10 is 91 chapters. In 52 weeks we would get 156 chapters. Your current break schedule takes 3ish months off, leaving 104 chapters. Which means, you can take more time off and still give a book a year. We will survive if you need more time. We’ll definitely bitch about it but just ignore that :D

I actually took 5 months off last year, which was one of many reasons something had to change. If you're unhappy supporting the story on Patreon, all the chapters come out on Royal Road for free. There will be many people who read this entire series without ever paying a cent.

Book 10 is longer than most. It's the third longest, in fact, after books 9 and 1.

I'm so happy your editor is back. I found a major error in the chapter that was posted on Friday. The world's "vehical voltron was the best" were written for the first time in recorded history so that must have been a error.

It was good hearing about your early endeavors on the podcast. Been thinking about trying to start a story myself and was always unsure about criticism and the like from the masses, I'm sure it's difficult to ignore but something that can be conquered eventually.

Learning to take criticism is just something you learn to do once it starts rolling in. It doesn't feel great, even when it's constructive, but it can be valuable. Eventually you grow those duck feathers and it just rolls off you.
