hello and happy October! ✴︎

as mentioned in recent posts, I've been experimenting a lot more with traditional tools and thought October's autumnal postcard would be the perfect opportunity to maximize texture. I like to start off by putting together a reference board and gathering images that have been speaking to me lately. from there, I'll observe the images as a collective and pick out repeating themes I notice to give myself a better idea of what to focus on and what I'm trying to achieve with the piece I'm making.

I then open my sketchbook and start braindumping whatever ideas are coming to mind to get a clearer idea of the image in my head. I also like to take this time to design the character and think about what sorts of clothing and accessories would suit their personality and lifestyle.

in a recent sketchbook post, I sang my praises for the blackwing matte 3B pencil that has made drawing a lot more fun and tactile and used it to draw the postcard's lineart. I'm absolutely obsessed with all the delicious texture that comes through, definitely one of my favorite things about using traditional tools.

I've historically worked digitally, so it's unusual for me to incorporate so much traditional into my process. I'm having so much fun with it and I learn so much about both traditional and digital each time I try something new. I love that all the knowledge and experience builds on one another and that the unknown is filled with both uncertainty and exciting surprise.

as usual, the wallpapers are attached to the bottom of this post. download the files and enjoy decorating your phone and desktop screens! ^.^
