DISREGARD THIS POST, Patreon has publicly apologized and taken back their proposal to impose new fees! Our voices were heard! ^o^

Hello there! ⊂((・▽・))⊃

Hope your day is going well! Today's post isn't as peppy as normal but I think it's important to discuss. As you may already know Patreon sent out an email today talking about new fees that they'll be implementing on all new pledges made starting Dec 18. The fee is $0.35 + 2% so for example if you're currently pledging $1 your next payment on January 1 would be $1.37.

I'm making this post today because I want to know how you feel about this change. Personally, I don't like it because 1) I don't want you to have to pay any extra fees and 2) Patreon boasts that creators get more when in actuality we earn less while patrons have to pay more.

If you'd like to continue supporting me on a different platform, I've recently created a ko-fi account! There are no extra fees so you don't have to worry about paying more than you choose to give. There's no pressure to contribute, I just wanted to have the option available for those who are interested. ^^

If you choose to cancel your pledge I completely understand and I greatly thank you for the support that you've shared on this platform. I really think we've achieved some amazing goals and projects together and I'm sincerely grateful for your time! <3

Now I want to get your feedback on the situation!

1) Should I keep my Patreon going or shut down my account?

2) If we decide to shut down where should we move to instead? I've considered ko-fi for the time being since it doesn't have any fees, but there's no content delivery system since its main purpose is to 'tip' creators. Someone else suggested Gumroad, which I'm currently considering and will depend on how many of you are interested in making the move.

Please let me know your thoughts in the comments below and we can decide as a community what the next best step is! ^^ Your feedback is greatly appreciated and even though this situation isn't ideal, I know we'll find a way to work through this. <3 Much love!

Vicki

Vicki, as long as you provide a way for me to support you while still getting some kind of inside access, I'll follow wherever you want to go. While I certainly don't love the idea of paying more, I will keep on supporting here should you choose to stay. Just keep us posted on what you choose to do, and thanks for everything!

Personally, I would probably go the Gumroad route. Fuck Patreon for being greedy capitalists. I am still happy to move to Ko-fi in the meantime while you make your transition (if you decide to or not). The only other delivery content would be to send newsletters using something like MailChimp (but it then might cost you money to maintain a CRM). There really isn't any other good alternative that doesn't require you to do a fair amount of manual labor. Sorry! and this sucks!

I don't really like the changes either because now people who pledge to a lot of different users now pay quite a lot more since they're charging per pledge. Which then in turn is making a lot of people stop supporting users or cutting down on the amount they're supporting because of budget reasons. I don't know anywhere else that would give us the same benefits as patreon, because I love getting to see your sketches and also the wallpapers you give us. I also look forward to getting your post card each month. But if you do find somewhere else that gives a similar experience to patreon, I will gladly follow you there. Fortunately for me, you're the only one I follow on patreon, so it would not be a hassle for me to move. Thanks for everything you do Vicki 💘

I'm more upset about them making the announcement confusing (at least to me it was) than about the charges. I don't mind the small increase but I didn't understand what impact this has on creators? None of the other artists I pledge to have talked about this yet so right now I'm pretty neutral about it. I wouldn't like to lose the content and the interaction (which is actually more important to me in the end) that patreon has, but I've never used gumroad for anything other than one-time purchases (zines, for example) so I don't have any suggestions about other platforms :/ But if you found a platform you were more comfortable with, I'd gladly follow you to it. Thank you for being open about this!! Have a nice week 💜

I know that Drip is brand new, but maybe take a look at it?

Hi Vicki! I read the email and I was a little confused at first. I follow more than 5 artists in this platform. I am not familiar with any other platform similar to this one. Like all the previous comments, whenever you go, we will follow you, i just wouldn’t like to minimize our interaction and the creative process you do and the services you give. If the new place you go if you decide to shut this one down, let you do the same that you are doing here will be great for both parties. Xoxo

Where ever you decide to go Vicki, I'll be there! Been supporting you for...gosh, a helluva long time. I love what you do! I don't know the right answer to this problem, but I know I'll still be here if you decide to stay. ❤️

Trish

Currently I'm feeling upset about these changes. I feel like it wasn't thought all the way through and seems like the fee could increase down the line. If I pledge a higher amount to a creator I get charged even more than someone who pledges on a lower tier. What a terrible incentive! And as someone mentioned if you pledge to multiple creators this starts to hurt your pocket a bit more. However, because we love and support you we want to stay wherever you are. The whole reason we're here is because of you, so we'll keep supporting you whatever you decide.

Thank you for writing this post! It eases a lot of people's confusion about the new update with fees and all! For me personally, I'll follow and keep on supporting you on whatever platform you prefer!

I'm personally okay with it. Fees like this are just part of owning a service like this. Granted, I'm a software engineer so I know all too well the costs of running a big site like this, it gets very expensive the more popular it gets (server, uptime and designer/developer costs go up). To me personally, the fees aren't that incremental. But I don't know what percent Patreon is already taking out of your pledges to begin with. If they're taking some out and now adding fees, then I would agree that's a bit too much. But if you're getting 100% of it, then I'm much more okay with it and I'd be okay continue supporting both you and Patreon. It's hard to find a site like this where independent artists can get support doing what they love. Otherwise you're looking at more work for yourself to continue to both get support but also deliver thank you "rewards" to your supporters and that's both time consuming and expensive. But not matter what, thank you for starting the conversation! I have a lot of respect for you as an artist and more so as a person for being so open and wanting to talk about this. I know it means more to some than others. Wherever you go, just let me know and I'll follow <3

monalisa

I'm ready to follow you whichever platform you choose to be on! If Patreon is telling us half truths like how the fees will benefit the creators and taking them for themselves, I think it's time to kiss them goodbye.

As mentioned, im willing to go wherever you go from here, but if patreon does not change it's policies ill have to change or stop my pledges. Not just to you, but several others since i do have higher pledges for several creators. I understand why the change and business, etc. but at the same time this is probably one of THE worst announcements ive seen in a while and i really dont appreciate how Patreon HQ has handled it. I do appreciate you though!!

Jess

Personally, you're the only person I pledge to on Patreon and I wouldn't mind paying an extra dollar or two, but it also makes it easy for me to move. What works for me with Patreon is that I love the wallpapers, processes, and sketches that we get every month. If it wasn't for those amazing perks/how cute my desktop looks, I probably wouldn't have pledged in the first place. However, since you don't get to receive the extra money that Patreon charges, it might be better for everyone to move to another platform with similar file delivery servcies! Best of luck Vicki xx

Catallena

I'll keep supporting wherever you decide to go, and I don't mind paying an extra fee for the platform, as long as you still get what I pledge you!

Henrike

I’m a recent patron, but I intend to keep supporting you, either here or wherever you decide to go. I already have to pay 19% VAT on every pledge I give, a small increase of 2-3% doesn’t make much difference to me (although VAT + fees probably will stop me from supporting many other creators). Love your work ❤️

Patrick Gearhiser

Thank you for asking for feedback! I hope moving and such won't happen because I really hope Patreon comes to their senses. I've recently curbed pledges, so I won't be withdrawing or anything currently, especially once I see what the final fee impact is. I'm very grumpy at Patreon, but I can't in good conscience take it out on any creators, all of which seem as blown away by this as anyone.

Vanessa

I wouldn't mind paying a little extra if you as the creator are benefiting from it, but if not I'll definitely keep supporting you and your art wherever you choose to go! I think it was very bad taste for Patreon to not inform their patrons of this new change before rolling it out, but maybe there is a better option somewhere else

Dimitrios Barrera

Whether you choose to stay with Patreon or move to another platform, my support will always be there for you. With each content update both you and your art breathe such life into my day that I'll happily follow you anywhere. No matter what, I'll be a fan of yours to the very end. :)

Alexina

I'll continue to support you wherever you go but I really don't like that Patreon is saying how it's better for creators when so many creators have spoken out against the changes.

denise

Hey Vicki, as a new patron, I don't like that Patreon is having us pay more but artists will receive less. I want to continue supporting you wherever you go though, so whatever you decide, I will follow!

Niki D

I’ll follow you wherever, Vicki! <3

Su Veney

I think I can fairly say everyone commenting here is more than willing to follow you, Vicki, should you decide to move to another platform. I'm wondering though, if anyone has any positive feedback about Gumroad since it's been brought up by several persons (other artists and their patrons) as an alternative, but I personally found it a little difficult to navigate? But maybe I'm just not up on it as I should be.

The Lunar Priestexx

I really don't like it. I wish they would at least give each creator the personal CHOICE whether to incur fees themselves or charge their patrons, because there are many small-time creators that get many $1 pledges. I don't plan to cancel my pledge, since the fees will be less than $1 extra and imo it's worth it for the content you provide. However if you decide to move elsewhere I will absolutely follow~

Ari

Whichever platform you decide to go with, I'll be happy to continue supporting you if I can :)

fabsno

It was such a bad move from Patreon, when I read that email I was so disappointed cause I realized immediately it was more for their income than the creators'. I already pay a VAT fee (i don't know if it's the same for everyone or just from my country) and it's not clear if i will still have to pay that +20% on top of the new fee. I'm really bad at math eheh but I'm sad if you'll be getting less than half of what I'm paying, mostly because I'm one of the smaller patrons. If you want to change platform is totally okay with me, I'll try my best to support you and your work which i love so much!

Stash (-3-)

while i'm still mostly comfortable staying with patreon i'm still upset they claim the changes are for y'all when in reality it's mostly for them so i'm down to stay or change whichever is best for you and the majority!

Julie

I’m okay paying the fee if you want to stay here. I will go where ever you go <3
