Haunting Dagger Fast Pass updated today! Go check it out if you’re in the rogue tier, let me know what you think! Dakota lore is TOUGH on the soul, but she deserves to be looked after, poor sweet girl 😭

Now. PSA.

Geez, I feel my heart rate going up just thinking about making this post.

BEFORE WE GET STARTED: What’s important is that y’all know I’m NOT going to be doing less comic updates, I’m not going on hiatus (for the time being?) and as long as you’re a member, I’m going to make sure I commit to my 4 page a week promise. Don’t panic.

But I do need to talk to y’all about some stuff. I’ve only mentioned it slightly in passing over the last few months, but my health this last year hasn’t been great. AFAIK currently, it’s nothing life threatening. But I have been advised that if I don’t work to get my stress levels down, I might have more complications in the future.

A lot of you have known me for a long time, and I’m so grateful for you all. A lot of you might not know me from the next guy, but for context, I was previously diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder that can exasperate my other symptoms during flare ups - which seem to more often be caused by stress and lack of rest. Brain fog, anxiety, depression, muscle pain and weight fluctuations (I gained and lost 30 lbs in the last year and a half, that’s drastic, even for me) are the usual culprits when I’m dealing with flare ups. Pain just became a part of my daily routine, but that’s not normal!! Rn, I’m worried about my blood pressure. My heart. You can see why I need to get the stress down lmao

You might be thinking, “Caez, it’s comics. How stressful can it be?” And you’re right! Kinda! It’s not the work that’s stressing me out - it’s the uncertainty of Patreon every time they implement some new payment system that messes with our pledges, the (self inflicted) poor time management I was working under, and the. Well. When I started making an actual living on here - THANKS TO YOU GUYS!! - I did so many mental backflips to convince myself that I wasn’t deserving of this much support.

And if I don’t deserve this support, I have to work extra hard to make sure I’ve earned it.

But that. Uh. Turned into “if you’re not suffering for it, you won’t be able to keep it”. (I also have OCD, you can imagine how THAT spiraled-)

I’m telling you guys this because I’m trying to slow down and be kinder to myself. I LOVE my work, but I also punish myself for it (procrastinating and working odd hours of the night/morning to make up for it, missing my family, missing my kid, missing my LIFE) and I can not allow myself to do that anymore. I joke around all the time that I haven’t played any games since last summer, but that’s actually sad. The last time I had a weekend off that wasn’t a sick day or family emergency was in November, and I made pages in advance for that!

My immediate goal is to have weekends off again. I need rest, I need time with my family, and I need the time to pursue hobbies outside of comics, outside of things I need to monetize. I’m surprised I haven’t been rendered useless by burnout yet, I’m glad I’m making these changes before it’s too late. That won’t change my weekend updating schedule, as long as I can adhere to my weekday work hours, and not be afraid to ask for extra help when I need it. My spouse is already making changes to help me with after school activities and obligations when I’m busy.

I tell you all this because you’re the only reason I’m even able to do this for my job. And I want to continue to do a good job! This is my dream come true!

And I know some of you are going to say “Caez, take the month off, we’ll still be here!” And I believe all 12 of you, but I can’t ever in good conscience deprive all 1,000+ of you from a month’s worth of updates nor would I expect to be paid for nothing! Comics will continue! I just need you all to know where I’m at rn and why I might be trying new things in the near future.

Honestly, if I can do this my way and not self sabotage halfway through, you shouldn’t see any change in the update schedule from now on and for as long as we stay above the 4-page monthly goal lmao

ALSO I made a new goal on my about me that says if we hit 20k a month, I’ll be able to afford more help to bring Lucky! back immediately LMAO It’s a high goal because I know what 4 pages a week does to me, even with a flatter! If I’m gonna start on another comic weekly, I’m gonna have to outsource more of that work to them or get an inker on board 😭

But that’s putting the cart before the horse lmao I’m just grateful to do what I do now, and I’m grateful for everyone who sticks around for these stories. Thank you for your patience, love, and encouragement. Don’t overwork yourselves!!

Coming from another artist/animator, I cannot stress how much time off, rest and family/friend time are important! Especially when underlying health issues are a factor. I don’t want to speak for others, but I honestly believe that no matter what choice you make, whether that’s implementing a new schedule or taking a month off, your fans will absolutely still be here to support you!

as a total stranger and rando subscriber, please take the time to focus on your health! and if it gives you peace and you can do it in a low intensity way (or outsource it to a friend like a patreon takeover or whatever?), you can do your month's posts from a backlog of sketches, or past commissions, or Lucky stuff! people always think that desk work is "easy" and in some ways it is, like it's not brick laying or whatever. but it's still work to your body, and to your nervous system.

As a long time supporter, I can honestly say that you’ve worked your BUTT off to be where you are now! Obviously you have a schedule, but I think maybe taking weekends off would be great for you and your family! Sure we’ll miss your weekend posts, but I think there’s a balance you’re missing from working so hard! I know I’ll still be here!!! You post the most out of all the creators I follow, and you have other socials you manage! Take a break!

ChaosQueenAshley

You deserve the rest. Your body can only handle so much at a time, and if you need rest- THEN REST! EAT FOOD! DRINK DA WATER! SEE YA FAMILY (as long as they don't add to the stress) AND GET THE SLEEP! Also, as much as I love seeing you update so much, if it is not sustainable, then back down the pages. I personally would rather have less pages and an artist not burnout versus someone working themselves to the bone. I will be here.

No beautiful artwork is worth your health, because without your love and soul you can’t put yourself on the page. You’re a human being that gets to live out their passion and make it their job, which is most artists dream. But sometimes that job can take from the joy you should be getting from art. Once it starts feeling like an obligation or stressful it’s not good for you anymore :( If you need time off, please do take it. Perhaps go down to 2 pages a week for the time being. I can’t imagine the stress you’re under and how it’s affecting your life. We support you Caez! No matter what

Isabel

As someone who deals with chronic pain, I completely understand that tug between wanting to do more and needing to prioritize health and rest. You spoil us!! I wouldn't even mind 2 or 3 pages a week, if you end up needing more time to put them out! You do AMAZING work and I'm sticking around no matter what! Honestly, I respect you for saying this and setting some boundaries! ❤️‍🩹

ALuckyArtist

I’ll still make weekend posts, they’ll just be scheduled in advance! I just need to utilize my weekdays better so I have time to rest later! 💖

Beans

Okay so, as someone who works themselves to sickness all the time, please focus on you! Comics, streaming, and parenting are all stressers bc you are putting all of yourself into it! I appreciate your hard work but having that time to spend by yourself, with your kid etc. is better than working yourself sick every chance you get. Thanks for letting us know and you know I’ll always be here watching and cheering you on even when I lurk sometimes ✨ thanks for being amazing and please enjoy your weekends , enjoy your hobbies and enjoy social time with friends and family🫶🏾

You deserve the rest! As a artist/animator myself, I can totally understand that underlying feeling of feeling like you arent doing enough if you aren't suffering... Being happy and healthy is always the most important because that's what's keeps us inspired and happy to do what we do for a living: creating art! I'm sure a lot of us will support you still no matter what you choose to do to keep yourself healthy and happy with your family!

Kiki

We always have your back. That's why we became patrons. Take it easy Caez.

Micaela Lepore

Get better, we love you and all your work. Praying for your health🫶🏼💛

Reenie

Please take care of yourself! You deserve rest, time with those you love and time for yourself. Thank you for your beautiful work. It makes me smile as often as it makes me stare in awe. Thank you for sharing something so personal. That takes courage. All the best

Eir

Please take care of yourself! You are loved. This is an incredibly taxing job and your health should always be a priority

Olivia

Please make sure you take care of your health, I think your game plan sounds great and you will greatly benefit from finding other outlets that bring you joy especially the family time, art is great for all kinds of things but if its going to cause health problems we all would understand the need to set some boundaries and will respect them. Please remember that boundaries are healthy and no one will fault you for them unless they are jerks and then you should ignore them anyways. We love you and support your decisions!

BegoniaRex

The amount of web comic and digital artists I've seen burn out into a crisp the last couple years has been unreal. I think you're very wise to take stock and make changes NOW before you crash. As an artist myself and someone who has chronic health issues too, it's hard to feel any kind of creative inspiration when your body is in freefall. I hope you can make changes so your art still feels fun and enjoyable to create AND you are also prioritizing your health over output ❤️

Shea

If it’s any consolation, I’ve been dumbfounded by the amount of work you pump out in a week. So if you need to cut back or rearrange how you do stuff, that’s completely understandable! Take care of yourself so you can be present for your family and have a life!

Stephanie McTague

Take your time and don’t worry, we will be here!!! Your physical and mental health is most important!!

lauren johnson

Physical, emotional, spiritual, and mental health before everything get your rest, be with family, be with yourself and meditate then get back when you feel ready. Greatness only blooms and grows when you give it what it needs

Jen

Taking care of you and your health is always a no1 priority! Rest, boundaries and understanding what your limits are is such an important step in being able to go on doing what we love 💖

maxx

health is always a number one priority, especially for artists. protecting your mind from burn out and overwork is important !! especially when you’re doing something you love as a job, it shouldn’t be forced. it should stay with the same love as when you started !! take your time and take care of yourself first ! i’m still gonna fangirl over every oc yall put out

Sarai

I admire your dedication to your art and your fans, but it's crucial to dedicate time to yourself as well! We'll be here when you get back, so take you're time to recuperate. We're rooting for you!
