A little story time: Four days before I left for DragonCon, I realized the wig I was planning on using for Gwen wouldn’t work. I had spent so long on the coat, and had already had to scrap making the skirt, and I was feeling really defeated. I went to a nearby professional makeup store and found the perfect wig, only it was $400. I scoured the internet for other options, and found a similar wig from the same brand for half the price. Still SO expensive, but after everything I had gone through, and the shoot we had already scheduled and paid for, it felt like the best option I was gonna get. I paid extra for overnight shipping, and it arrived less than 24 hours before my flight departed. I added bangs, and plugged in my curling iron. I thought to myself “I should do a test strand somewhere in the back to make sure this synthetic wig can withstand heat.” And then I thought “Meenz, you paid $200 for this wig. There’s no way it isn’t at least low-level heat resistant.” Famous last words. I took a section from the front, and wrapped it around my curling wand, and it immediately melted. I unwrapped it as fast as I could, and luckily the curling wand was fine, but the small strand I had started to curl was completely destroyed. I managed to cut most of the bad bits away, and it looks fine, but ultimately the wig is the one thing I’m not happy with. It’s too thin and I wish it were curlier. But I still love these photos, and I’m SO proud of how this coat came out. I can’t wait to properly finish this costume, and I can’t wait to be able to use my own hair with it in the Spring!
