Following the sudden death of his father, young Prince Leota has ascended to the throne. To punish the squabbling noble families that attend his court, the newly crowned King issues to them an impossible command: They must bring him the head of a godling.

Unwilling to sacrifice their firstborn sons on this suicide mission, the noble families instead send their undesirables-- the incompetent, perverse, or crippled. And House Vrittanen and House Salo send two wayward daughters, the headstrong Rhione and cruel Kassandra, on a journey from which they may never return.
