Maui wrote the entirety of Indy and Alan's relationship as well as Indy's dialogue in this scene, so it seems a good time to remind that Indy is Maui's OC! And you can find their art on Bluesky as well as their library of work on Patreon.

By the by, thank you for bearing with me over the brief hiatus, and for the kind words left on my post last week; y'all are extremely kind and I appreciate it a ton ;~; <3

take that, Alan defenders

OddOttAllen

I WAS RIGHT!! he's the obsessive ex that still wants Indy even though he's already lost him!! cheaters suck...

bismuthalienated

What is with cheaters always being suspicious of cheating? I see stories online and 9 times out of 10 they are very pushy about thinking they are being cheated on. I guess its projection since they are doing it that means their partner must be too?

Sammy

As always good work :D

drewduer

Never met an Alan I liked

Stormi Husky

Omg I knew he had a big dirty secret, what kinda logic is making your bf think they're gonna cheat or pressure them to confess and move on to another pointless argument just to then be caught bringing a person over to cheat on said person. Hes such a slippery lil snake and he soooo deserved to be hit. Poor bby Pen's like: "Well Fuck" same here buddy ;-;

SeigeTheProot

How fast does all that sugar mix into the coffee?

TakenDreams

Yeah all of that tracks. Manipulator spidey sense was correct again

KingMyth

I KNEW IT!! There was something slimy about Alan

Equinox

Thank GOD Indy found someone better such as pen HE deserved WAYYY better than Alan, Alan is just a self centered meanie :<

Maggot

slap him a second time for me

Stardragon

Because they expect the partner to do it too and who knows why they are jealous

Zane_Keratario

I KNEW IT! The one who is always accusing is normally the one who is the cheater!

Aaron Fox

I've been in Indy's position. Me and the "other guy" became friends over it. Turned out alright in the end.

Kit Foxxy

OOOOOOHMYGOD I KNEW IT WAS SOME BS LIKE THIS! poor Indy, he didnt deserve all that emotional/verbal abuse.

That_weird_one

They prolly feel like if the other is also cheating then it's not a big deal? Obviously it is, but yk

Tanner Possberg

A thief is someone who thinks everybody steals, as the saying goes.

Adryx D. Orbay

Resentment and hypocrisy are some powerful motivators for anger and rash decisions. Knew Indy was a good guy.

Maui

not very, he adds so much I imagine there's always low-key a sediment layer on the bottom of the cup :(

Taco Muncher

i mean. let's not try to score points. I think it's a bit reductive to try and frame it as Alan defenders and Alan... attackers. I'm not fully clear as to what you mean, though. I think when engaging with any media that you should try to sympathize with the antagonist. Alan seems to be a real piece of shit, but I think there's a lot of value in trying to figure out why the character views themselves as just. And part of that, sort of, is figuring out justifications for their toxic behavior

Oltanya

I think you maybe read a little bit more into my four words than I intended to put there :p

Yazzy

I feel so bad for Indy, not that he had to go through all of those pointless fights, showing alan proof hes not cheating, but Alan had to audacity to cheat on him after allat and went back to him in chapter 3 to try to get back togheter probably because that wolf guy probably broke up with him cuz of his attitude, we genuenly can't even blame Indy for slapping him, he deserved it. 😤

Salazaar Fyrfang

Oooooooo shiiiii! I knew it! I freaking knew it!

Husky

Of course he was cheating he was so guilty he projected himself onto indu

Kyzer

Kind of a coping strategy. By accusing his partner of cheating, he tries to downplay his own cheating. Or to reason/justify it. By assuring himself that his partner was cheating, he feels in the right to cheat as well. If the partner denies he gets aggressive about it. Cuz for him its a fact and his partner denying it is basically his partner calling him a liar. Its manipulative, but more to himself than to his partner.

Vitropolis

This reminds me a lot of my ex-girlfriend. Excluding the cheating part, she also had a tendency to be manipulative and start fights for the pettiest reasons.

Rader Ketron

I knew Alan was the bad guy!!! DOWN WITH ALAN!!!

Cyril Jaquel

Ooooh Alan has a TYPE too. Look how similar the guy at the door looks to Indy.

Oltanya

all good! I just definitely didn’t mean it too seriously ^^

MetalExveemon

Oh man. What a mess of a situation... Interestingly, when we first got Alan's take on things, he said, "He [Indy] convinced himself that I was cheating on him." Yet Alan never actually said that he himself WASN'T cheating. In contrast, Indy provides more information, stating that he's monogamous, that it was Alan who was accusing Indy of cheating - and that it actually Alan who was the unfaithful one. Another interesting detail is "the other guy": clearly, Alan has a type, as the other guy is not only the same species as Indy, but is also on the tall side with brown hair. Even more insulting is that this other guy looks like the more "appropriate" kind of boyfriend somebody like Alan would want: well-dressed, well-groomed, obviously makes more money. And yet, Alan wanted the both of them: the rough-and-tumble Indy, and his fancier counterpart. Very greedy, inconsiderate, selfish and hurtful behavior. While this doesn't justify Indy hitting Alan, it makes it VERY understandable and more forgiveable; who WOULDN'T hit Alan if they were in Indy's place?

Taco Muncher

i love a nasty little freak. a pathetic little creature. the scorpion on the frog's back. a charming little man, trapped within himself. he cannot escape, for he loathes the thought of admitting he ever entered in the first place. I also love the thought that Indy's story is also biased. That the suitor at the door may not have been cheating with Alan. That Alan's obsessive nature made Indy paranoid. So when a guy shows up looking for Alan, and then gets spooked by the fact that he has a predator boyfriend, it becomes conclusive evidence.

SeigeTheProot

Ah like the Mexican hot chocolate things that you break pieces off and put it in hot milk

MuddiDragon

Every accusation is a conffession

ATLAS JET

In the wise words of Dr. Nefarious… ANNIIIIIHILATE HIM!!!

Amy

That evil twink will pay, That evil twink will pay, That evil twink will pay

Alex

So, my manipulator radar was right. I still wonder what exactly it is that Alan did, that he managed to break and manipulate a caring and loving person like Indy into physically retaliating. I'm sure we'll find out in the coming pages. And I also wonder how much more it's going to make me despise Alan. Uff, this wasn't easy to read. It triggered my trauma and self-doubt, and I almost burst into tears. I still have a long way to go and will need a lot more time to heal, from the things that I went through with my manipulator. But, I believe that if a writing brings out so many emotions in the reader, then that means it was masterfully written. Thank you, Maui! 🙂

Jasper

Wow...just...fuuuuuck

Emersky studios

It's projection. If one is able to lie so perfectly to ones partner, they can be begin to get paranoid the other is doing the same. It's not completely unfounded either, I've heard stories where the other partner knew and just started a new relationship and once the cat was out of the bag one way or another it'd be an immediate breakup/divorce. Sometimes it means nothing, sometimes the cheater has the gull to be upset for being inflicted with the betrayal they'd been inflicting all along.

Anubislaughed

Poor Indy. The initial lovebombing, followed by the constant criticism and control, and the gaslighting and cheating. Also, I love how the memories panels turn back from B&W to color as Indy realizes the truth.

Kael Duranus

Yeah, figured it was something like that. Unfortunately, been in that exact place, twice. Always sucks. I feel really sorry for Indy for this whole mess. Not only for being cheated on in the first place, but having to relive the whole thing every time the incident comes up.

Cosmic

So uh New guy looks cute And given that he was upset by the revelation that Alan and Indy were dating, probably not a douchebag Unlike a certain someone...

Thruster_Check

Wow, had to go back and look, but other than the hair and clothes, yeah, absolutely!

Maui

so sorry you gotta go through that but really glad you're also healing! I probably wouldnt have been able to write a lot of this a couple years ago for similar reasons. tysm!!

Cyril Jaquel

It's like clean cut yuppie Indy! 8(

MetalExveemon

That's so sad that you went through something as awful like that. :( So sorry you were also triggered, but don't let it beat you. Allow yourself to heal, and remember to be kind to yourself.

Thruster_Check

Just noting Alan's hands-on in the third panel; he seems to have a bad habit of that; I've mentioned it before. Might have had something to do with his getting blasted in the chops in the first place. Also in the third panel, Indy owning up to his own less-than-saintly behavior and failing to take the exit in time. Very saddening. And I still think we need to hear Alan's telling of the entire tale.

Cyril Jaquel

Maybe he has a yote/pred fetish

MetalExveemon

I'm not so sure Indy's story is also biased. For one thing, he willingly admits to being at fault during the relationship too; being dismissive, picking fights, being resentful, having an attitude and intentionally embarrassing Alan. Indy even says, "Maybe I should have tried harder." This is a strong contrast to Alan, who tried painting Indy as something of an unreasonable monster, while casting himself as the saintly, longsuffering boyfriend.

Tristan Hankins

Lol, the guy in the last panel. I thought that was Indy's reflection in a mirror, of the way Alan wanted him to dress / cut his hair XD.

Ruffian

The other guy looks like Sebastian from The Evil Within

Micah Morell

Oh damn, this guy is surely an idiot and a pot-stirring duche

Thingymabob

Yeah this doesn't surprise me. Sounds like Alan was hurt in the past somehow and it resulted in insecurities he needs to work on. Doesn't excuse the behavior one bit though.

Maple

The tea. The TEA!!! ☕️ 🫖

Tom Noyb

People expect the kind of behavior in others, that they engage in themselves.

Tom Noyb

Isn't everyone in this quadrangle a pred, except Pen?

Tom Noyb

Isn't it Alan's telling what led to what's happening right now?

G255D

As always - amazing story telling and art by an exceptionally talented artist :) -Also getting a kick out of all the 'Comment Hidden' posts - you know you are telling an amazing story when people get this excited :)

Beans

My rage is kindled... Alan count your days 3:<

Amberthyst

The dialogue is really good here. Concise, organic, and idk. Just flows really well

sunkawakan

I think we've all had one of those relationships...

JollyLilFucker

Cool a new panel, time to over analyze every detail

wolvesday7

Oh, I see Alan’s one of those people who’s cool with yelling at and grabbing folks. My bet’s that he gets backhanded later for being mean to the good boy

2026-09-18 16:00 I see no winners here, only losers, especially knowing where this all ends up. I also strongly believe there is much more going on between these two than we have been shown and so far we have heard only one side of it. Time will tell I guess. With that said, this marks my exit. I’ve had my say, and I feel no need to keep repeating myself, leaving myself exposed or feeling like a fool for spending hours researching and writing posts into a void in a place where I’m not liked or welcome because I’ve taken a moral stance and questioned things instead of following the dominant opinion. My moral compass has not broken and my conviction about Alan remains unwavering. I love Alan while recognizing that his story is complex and cannot be reduced to a caricature or a catalogue of faults. He is a whole person and his circumstances deserve to be acknowledged honestly, understood fully, judged fairly and met with compassion rather than hate. I will not apologize for caring about him, his welfare, wanting him and his plight to be treated with dignity or speaking plainly about the hostility he has faced from others. Even if I’m no longer around everything I have said about him remains sincere. Everyone makes mistakes, but they should be given the opportunity to atone, learn and improve themselves. Very few individuals are completely beyond redemption. They deserve the chance to grow beyond the worst thing they have done and show who they can become.

just wanted to say this comment made my day, esp 'a man trapped within himself who cannot escape bc he loathes admitting he entered at all ' 👌👌👌

Maui

We definitely didn't want anyone to feel unwelome or unliked, I'm sorry. I really wanted this arc to cause more discussion and theorizing so I was glad to see people talking about the nuance, it worried me when people were so quick to dismiss Alan's claims entirely that I had maybe written him poorly. But I think people may have just assumed he was a minor plot point to cause a little strife that would be resolved quickly. Indy having hit him was a heavy enough twist that I was a little afraid to write it, tbh, so I understand people assuming it wasn't a possibility. He's the main love interest and I knew that might make him irredeemable to some people. Folks definitely have a lot of strong feelings about the current arc, esp people who've experienced cheating/controlling spouses or domestic abuse, and I think people being heavily invested makes sense. I just wanna assure that I care a lot about all the characters I write, Alan included. If I didn't I don't think I could write them! I really appreciate anytime ppl connect with any of them for any reason! A good handful of folks thirst after Alan in the discord server despite knowing he's not flawless and make memes about him and I find that super funny and validating. I was just joking with people about how Indy being a smoker causes some folks to react with total dismay bc I've mentioned he probably smells like smoke sometimes. People caring is the biggest thing for me! I feel really validated when people love to hate them or love them frustratedly bc of them being deeply flawed. People hating a character I wrote because he reminds them of an ex is a huge win to me, because at least to that specific person, I made him feel real! I really sorry you had a bad time and I fully understand taking a step back from such a heavy topic, especially when there was so much anger and vitriol towards a character you care about. I hope it doesn't seem like I took the issue too lightly or implied it wasn't serious and unacceptable. I really appreciate that you care about Alan, and I hope that even if he doesn't always make good choices you can still tell I try to put a lot of care into him feeling like a person!

2026-09-18 16:00 Maui, thank you for taking the time to write to me so openly. I appreciate your honesty about how difficult it was to write the revelation that Indy had hit Alan, and about your hope that this arc would lead to thoughtful discussion. What you said about worrying that readers might dismiss Alan’s claims too quickly means a lot to me. I have always taken this story seriously and Alan’s words and his pain have mattered to me since the beginning, it also means a great deal to hear you speak about the care you put into making him feel like a person rather than a plot device. I have never expected Alan to be perfect. No one is perfect and we all make mistakes. However, I don’t see Alan as a caricature of evil deeds either. I see someone with hopes and ambitions like the rest of us, someone with the capacity to love, the desire for affection and the ability to show generosity and kindness. Even Indy’s own memories show that side of him. He recalls the warmth between them, Alan warmly smiling while standing very close to Indy, Alan happily sharing something he enjoys with Indy, Alan joking while tenderly pulling leaves from Indy’s fur and Alan inviting Indy into his home, all before their relationship began to sour. I can recognize Alan’s flaws and still care deeply about him, because I know his flaws are not the whole of who he is. It also made me feel better to hear that others in the Discord are drawn to Alan and make memes about him, even knowing his flaws. I have felt quite alone in loving him and hearing that others see something in him helps me feel less like some sort of weirdo for connecting with him so deeply. I appreciate that you have given him a voice and a life beyond any one painful scene and I appreciate your reassurance that you take the violence he experienced seriously. I know many readers bring painful experiences to this arc, as do I. I have experienced both emotional abuse and physical violence myself off and on thought my life, especially when I was a child. I noticed that you read the post where I spoke about some of those experiences before I deleted it to protect my privacy and security. That history is part of why I feel such a desperate need to protect him. I can recognize his bad behavior which I do not condone and still want his pain, his dignity and his capacity to grow to remain visible. My care for him comes from seeing the good in him alongside his mistakes rather than allowing any one part of his story to define him as a person. Living through those experiences has also left me wishing there were just more love in the world, not less. To me love is not a way of looking past pain. It is how we keep pain from being the only thing we pass on to each other. Though I’m far from perfect and I make mistakes which I always come to regret, I like to think we can all speak honestly about difficult things while still making room for compassion, both for the characters and for the people discussing them. Please know that you have never wronged me in any way. My decision to step away from Patreon altogether is something I have decided for myself, because I no longer feel that being part of this space is right for me. I do not want you to feel responsible for that choice or to feel that you need to do anything about it. I simply need some distance from the discussions here and I feel it is best for me to leave. I will continue following the story all be it from a distance but I might also return after a break but remain silent in the shadows from here on out. Thank you again for listening and for taking my feelings seriously. Once the story has concluded, I may reach out again if it feels appropriate. When that time comes I would enjoy having the opportunity to speak with you more candidly if you’re available and willing. For now, I just wanted to leave things on a note of gratitude and let you know that I appreciate the time and care you’ve shown me in our exchanges. It has always meant a lot to me.

Yes, but not the way Alan had intended. Alan tried to blow smoke and Pen knew it and went after Indy's side of the story, contrary to Alan's expectations that Pen would just give up and go away. So Alan's plan to get Pen out of the picture backfired instantly.

If you turn it into syrup it won't accidentally spill out of the cup as easily.

“A certain someone”? I don’t recall can you remind me whom this is?

Equinox

Poor Indy.. deserved so much better than Alan..

Equinox

Too many times..

Cosmic

Alan. I'm calling Alan a douchebag for leading both Indy and guy-in-last-panel on X3

I want to say first that I miss the longer posts here from the person who was saying it was not fair/right to rush to judgement - there is wisdom in that and I do hope they return but I also understand setting boundaries. especially if the interactions were hurting them (intentional or not). I just awoke from a dream that has left in a bit of a sorrowful state. In the dream I traveled to a small old farm house - the kind of clapboard and screen door. I go into the farmhouse and inside there are several old women sitting in dated chairs an a sofa - the kind with the cushions being thin and dense- not really comfortable but they did not seem to mind - they were happy to see me and as soon as I saw them I realized they were caretakers- not of the farm but of something- someone that I had to leave behind in my life. It was then that a dog came in and I realized that they were there to look after him. I knew the dog right away as a companion of mine from over 30 years ago - his muzzle was greyed out but he was in good health and happy- I worried for a moment that he may not recognize me and that made me so sad in the dream but he came to me and started kissing me and in those kisses I was somehow restored - made whole again. I loved him deeply in life and anyone who has ever loved a dog theirs is a love so complete and whole it is unlike anything I have ever experienced. I knew he was well cared for and that he was there for me when I could come and eventually stay there with him. I have had similar dreams to this with other canine companions I have had in my life and every time when I awaken from them I am filled with joy and a deep sorrow - a longing in my heart for what is yet to come. I share all of this because it put me in a state of mind to come here and comment something that maybe someone needs to hear in the hope that it gives them hope and uplifts them, possibly in recognition. When I reflect on the dynamic of this story I have evolved somewhat in the effect it has on me. I realize now that characters and people tend to recreate the things that have hurt them - often times not knowing why - caught in a loop trying to integrate that hurt in some way that makes sense to them, that lets them move forward. As the prior lengthy poster in previous threads as indicated, Alan (and what he represents) , just like all of us is not a simple thing - but a reflection of the people and situations that have hurt us (and him). It makes sense that we would want to lash out at him but it also makes sense that Alan did not become who he currently is in a vacuum and is also working through those things in his own way- I believe this is why we tend to hurt ourselves and others, by not being able to see or understand what is within and behind us. This is not to forgive hurting others but rather to give context and grace because judgement is a restriction that does not allow room for redemption.

I would like to thank you for sharing your perspectives - I found them enlightening and I also find myself missing them. I know you have set boundaries here but if you ever would like to chat feel free to hit me up - just not literally ;) I can say that your insights have helped me understand some things in my life much better and I want you to know that you made a difference for me and I am certain others thank you again for taking the time to share with everyone :)

I really appreciate you saying this. Thank you, it truly means a lot to me. ❤️

I am optimistic. However, hitting someone because they cheated on you isn't okay either. I hope there was some other reason. I am sure there was.

Good for them then - its important to be able to filter out stuff if it bothers you. I just thought that maybe the comments were racy or something - good to know :)
