I do think my favorite thing about Umamusume is that the entire franchise is based on real life races, so the outcome is already determined. They have to write around race results they can't change. So this means that you have instances like this where a character builds up a rivalry but leaves them behind to go to nationals anyways. It's kinda a spoiler but it's never actually brought up directly, March is just never making it to nationals. Oguri's first rival never left regionals and the two never raced against each other again. In fact, Fujimasa March isn't even the real name of the horse she's based on because she remained a regional racer and Umamusume only picks up the IP for national race horses. It's the rare sports anime that can just completely skip most tropes because the outcome is predetermined. In a normal sports anime your MC getting injured over and over again would feel repetitive, but when it happens to a different character in the original show it feels SO much more genuine because it's exactly what happened. It makes the struggle infinitely more real. So Oguri going to the nationals means anything can happen now. In a normal sports anime she might lose the first few races to show the power of a national level racer, go through a training montage, and then dramatically claw her way to the top. That's not guaranteed here. She could just as easily win or lose every single race here, so long as you don't know the actual racing record of the horse.

ONWARD TO THE NATIONALS! As we leave kasamatsu, here are some more non spoiler facts: 1. As mentioned by rudolf, oguri cap is a beast. His IRL nickname is: "The Ashen Beast of Kasamatsu". Having and ashen like coat and extremely overwhelming power when he raced. 2. Oguri had a total of 12 races winning 10 of them in Kasamatsu. March Tosho (who Fujimasa March is based off) gave Oguri his 2 losses. 3. Belno's transfer with Oguri is a homage to Oguri's ferrier (the one who manages the cleates and shoes) also joining the move from regionals to nationals alongside him.
