One thing I like about Hell's Paradise is even from the get go in season 1, it always feels hopeless, you can never tell who's going to go next and who's going to make it through a fight, keeps you on your toes at all times

Just Another Josh

What Gabimaru is doing is described in a way that makes it a bit complicated, but the gist of it is that he drastically weakens his own tao every single time he blocks an attack. If he blocked the attack with his own tao at full strength then it would be hindered and he'd take even more damage, but weakening the tao means he only takes the pure physical damage instead of physical AND tao damage. Then he suddenly boosts his tao back up even stronger when he goes for a hit, looking for gaps in the current of his opponent. Block the attack with weak tao, then strike with boosted tao. Over and over again, not mixing those two up even once or you absolutely screw yourself over. Obviously this is ungodly difficult and exhausting. He has to match every one of his opponent's strikes, takes physical damage blocking every blow, has to perfectly read when and where his opponent will apply tao, and is constantly changing his own flow on every single move. It's likely VERY exhausting, but the tensen have no counter to it as they've never been forced to adapt so rapidly mid combat (since they're used to overwhelming with brute tao quantitiy). Then you add to that the constant threat of Yuzuriha who innately weakens the tensen they're fighting, meaning the instant he drops his guard she can strike. Obviously that wasn't nearly enough to win, but their strategy was damn near flawless and only fell apart due to the fact the base level between humans and tensen is WAY too far apart. The second he transformed they lost all possibility of just tanking the physical damage. The just don't have the durability to win against something so much physically stronger than them AND with regeneration to outlast them.

Thank you for the thoughtful explanation.
