Just Another Josh

I do find it interesting how basically every reaction to this show I’ve seen first defaults to the idea that Coco has a hidden power. I feel like everyone is SO used to anime that start with a powerless main character who secretly has the strongest ability, that it’s a bit hard to believe WHA when it confidently states that magic is exclusively found in the ink and the drawing techniques. I know that a ridiculous number of series break their own rules and reveal a secret ability, but WHA is insanely consistent. Magic in this world is exclusively found in ink. No humans innately possess greater magical abilities than the others. The only difference between a mage of 50 years and one who just started is their drawing technique and knowledge of casting seals. Silverwash eyes are an interesting addition because it is 100% not a disability that should stop someone from being a witch. Yes it means they can’t used colored ink and that is a bit of a liability, but they can still use normal ink perfectly fine. The fact that Silverwash is so discriminated against is pure ableism. The witches simply look down on those with imperfect eyesight. They absolutely could accommodate them and it wouldn’t even be that hard, yet they don’t. Finally, I just want to point out yet another example of Qiffrey hypocrisy. These past two episodes have repeated again and again how awful losing memories is. Qiffrey talked about how it would destroy Coco’s love for magic last week and this episode he tells all the girls how it robs someone of a portion of their existence. He keeps telling those around him how horrific that spell is, yet he doesn’t hesitate to use it to keep the ink a secret. We keep seeing that there is something he so desperately wants that he is willing to break taboos for it.
