Just Another Josh

I remember being really shocked by how good this movie was. It just felt like it came out of nowhere, yet it's this surprisingly high quality blend of a traditional Japanese folk story and futuristic tech. Then also somehow a time travel story, a musical, AND with good fight animation? What an insane concept, but I am kinda a sucker for things like this willing to take crazy risks. Also, the fact that the music is almost entirely covers of classic vocaloid songs is another odd choice. This movie brought in 6 iconic vocaloid producers for the music, because the director realizes part way through production that Yachiyo felt an awful lot like Miku and decided using actual vocaloid songs (sung by the VAs) would be the perfect fit. This whole thing has this layer of modern internet culture over it, with VR games, vocaloid music, live streaming, etc. It does a really good job of making it feel like it's not THAT distant of a future, despite the technology shown. Which fits with this being a timeline that was accelerated slightly by Kaguya's interventions. We saw that it was only 2030, so it's culture being so similar to ours feels right while also making the technology difference make sense.
