My theory about Niffty "always tweaking" is that she was a 1950s housewife (Japanese wife of an American WWII soldier, in my mind theater) who was always a little weird and traumatized and ended up getting addicted to prescribed amphetamines as many 1950s housewives did. Somewhere along the way she did something heinous enough to end up in hell, I guess. (TMI but I based this theory on my own great-grandmother who was a Mormon Utah housewife in the 50's who got addicted to prescribed amphetamines and it turned her into a kind of unhinged person. Uppers were given to a lot of women who were overwhelmed by the standards of housekeeping and motherhood (especially of a ton of kids) imposed by that era. By the early 60s she was doing things like beating my teenage grandma with a hairbrush and throwing her out of the house when she got too hopped up on pills. My only memories of her are of her in the nursing home batting at tiny devils she hallucinated were flying around and nipping at her skin. After about 40 years of being on that stuff heavy she was WACKED OUT but still managed to keep a tidy home. I'm not saying this to bring the vibe down - I think Niffty is a super fun character, but knowing that she is canonically Japanese and died in the 50s with her aesthetic and personality it's just what it reminded me of.)
