Speaking of Isayama (not discussing or comparing quality of the two shows) I love comparing SU and AOT when it comes to twists and story beats. When I revisited SU after I been finished AOT, I thought damn This episode legit feels like Grisha's memories or The Basement. Honestly, the similar mindblowing full scope reveals of what we thought was true is so insane yet uniquely done in both. Also there were indeed subtle hints as far back as S1 about Rose, Pink Diamond, and Pearl. The most apparent ones being when Pearl and Steven were trying to get to space and her suit literally having a Pink Diamond insignia. When Rose talked to Greg he asked her did she miss home and she said never, even though she was supposed to be from earth, not home world. Same thing happened when Pearl was replaying a memory of Rose, and Rose said if we do this we can never go home. Theres many more too.

The reveal split the community in multiple ways. Some people thought it was too obvious and telegraphed from the start. These were the kind of people that had seen every ep 100 times and had compliled all the clues and calculated every movement or whatever. There were so many red herrings thrown in over the years. There were so many theories about Rose and Pink and a lot of people were mad that their theory wasn't the true one.

Others were mad because this really makes Rose seem like a villain that caused a lot of pointless suffering, and fans were simply mad at that. Like Rose stans felt bamboozled or something idk. They took the show way too seriously hahahaha

You know, I never really thought about comparing AOT to SU but you’re right, that really did have the same feel

You can see why Pearl was freaking out when she found out Lion was linked to Rose, because Rose really did tell her everything
