"It got worse, but I think it's bout to get worser"

Kenn

The letters Greg sent his parents were all unopened. He tried to have a relationship but they were stuck up and wanted to stay out of his life because of their ego. Anyone who doesn’t get Greg’s pov has no idea what toxic strict parents are like. Yes maybe Greg gave Steven way too much freedom but I’d rather Steven grow up with a loving family and a little danger here and there than some asshole grandparents who didn’t even bother getting to know him.

I’m not sure where your watch suggestions go but would you ever consider watching Hunter X Hunter? Or have you seen it already?

That's not entirely wrong, but it's how Greg compared it to Steven's life. Basically exactly what E.D. was saying. Greg's child-hood was fucked up. Steven had a loving family but his child-hood was /really/ fucked up.

All parents fall short, some more than others. Rose and Greg have shared trauma around their parents both not accepting who they are/want to be, but Greg WAY overcorrected by unschooling Steven, never taking him to a doctor, not giving his life structure, and not even living with him (if I were Greg there is no "my son is an alien" enough to keep me from 24 hr access to keep tabs on them. In the first episode Greg looks SUPRISED to see Steven show up and didn't even know what time it was. In the grandparents house episode Greg is telling Steven (while he is zoning out at the end) that Steven can have cake and icecream for every meal. This is a kind of neglectful parenting that absolutely has a negative effect on kids. But, to be fair to Greg, he is trying!
