To make a parallel with the guitar playing world: you don't need a vintage Stratocaster, a Marshall JCM amp with a 4x12 cabinet or any of that fancy stuff to become a great guitarrist: all you need is to develop your skills and taste with whatever you got. And sometimes, "bad gear" can be your best ally: Lee Ranaldo and Thurston Moore took advantage of the availability of cheap guitars to experiment with alternative tunings and extended techniques; that made Sonic Youth one of the most unique rock bands of all time.
