When you need to traverse icy spaces, it helps if you have something that can provide traction.

These pieces of equipment provide that traction. They aren't great on all surfaces though, as they reduce traction on stone or metal (which they don't dig into) and increase it too much on wood (which they really catch on, and people with wood floors will likely get mad at you for damaging said floors).
