Excited to watch Professor!

Jeff Jones

Excited to learn more about the Taylor Swift D&D scandal. :)

Adam

I would watch any video you produce. There are a few channels that I literally check and browse on purpose every day, yours is one.

Lee Dunning

I really do love all your videos, professor. Thank you for breaking things down and explaining how to help my favorite YouTubers out. I'm off to do my part.

Adam

Question. I can turn off the sound via the browser tab, does that kill the algorithm? Sometimes I am working, and I usually listening to music as I code. but sometimes I click a video I want to watch, and add to the watch later list. Since you pointed out that not watching the video the first time hurts the you tuber, can I just let it play in a tab but turn the tab's sound off? I wouldn't even know how to test that.

Daniel Defazio

Yeah. That's a problem. Turning off the sound on YouTube definitely hurts performance. Even turning off the sound on the tab.

Rufus Lynks

I realized I was not watching your YT when I was watching these here. So I decided to turn on YT notifications for many channels. If I don't want to watch that channel or video it goes into a s scheduled watch list fo later that day. I'll put YT in a side window whlie working and let that watch list run. I'll go back and rewind here and there. It has been a better "radio" in the background. And I can get focused on a video as needed during breaks. In all honesty, your pacing, volumen, and emphasis makes your videos useful to me beyond the content. I'd throw it on in the background if you read the phonebook and commented on folks names. Maybe it's New Yorker thing. My folks were born and bread in NYC during the depression and have always enjoyed listening to New Yorkers for news and radio shows. Probably a dissertation topic on demography and prefered learning methods. Who knows. As always. Thank you.

Todd Sharp

Are re-plays of videos not counted? in this video, you seem to imply that. And is it per-device? Or per account? Sometimes I’ve run on my phone as well as my pc trying to help you out. Now I’m wondering if there’s no point.

Steven Sweet

Good to know about the YouTube volume, I've always wondered about that. I try to always run your videos on YouTube as soon as I see them, even though I've seen them here. Same thing about using the word "algorithm" in the comments.

David Spray

I love ALL Dungeoncraft videos!!

Chuck Thorin

DungeonCraft always has good videos. Thanks PDM. Let's put the blame where it lies. Youtube. It's not worth their time and effort to put any distinction between RPG content like other subjects. If I watch a GWAR video, it's not followed up with "Here's the latest from Taylor Swift". RPG's are all the same to Youtube.

SpeakingBeast

Excellent video, Professor - I'll save my additional comments for the algorithm. :P

It was through Matt Colville that I found both PDM and Seth Skorkowski and through PDM I found Ginny Di. I enjoy the videos from all of you!

Matthew Crismali

Interesting...so I'm a Patron and see these videos in their entirety plus bonus content before they hit YouTube. Admittedly, it is not common for me to rewatch the video once it hits YouTube because I've already seen the video content (plus bonus). I hesitate to suggest this but perhaps you should stop posting the entire video plus bonus content on Patreon, but instead simultaneously load the video on YouTube and the bonus content on Patreon that way Patrons can watch the videos on YouTube to help the algorithm and still get to enjoy the bonus content here on Patreon.

Google, YouTube, Hasbro and WoTC are all abject evil. That's why I Pay for content on this platform. "It Just Got Worse" when they started monkeying with the algorithm to hurt smaller creators and help out those who tow the corporate line. " YouTube hates Matt Mercer for moving from D&D over to Daggerheart" because "D&D" isn't in the title of his videos with a bunch of drama filled click bait. Seems everyone is using CLICK BAITY language these days. I tried to use as much as I could in this post just because it's ridiculous but it's late and need sleep. Happy gaming everyone.

Frederic Schmitt

☺ OMG! I CLICK HATEBAIT (this is sarcasm) ^^ I am looking forward to the upcoming videos. All of them sound very interesting. I love your content although I only played DnD once 30 years ago ♥

Daniel Defazio

Thank you for your support. I don't think these companies are evil, but full disclosure--I own stock in Google/Youtube.

I play your videos on mute at home and at work multiple time to help and I have ever since you first said long ago that such actions were helpful. I genuinely watch your older mechanical and crafting videos a ridiculous amount. Then I play them on mute because that's the kind of content I want to see. In other news, of course YouTube, a "captured" corporation only promotes D&D another "captured" corporation. I used to say it on your FB group long ago and would promptly be brigaded so I just left. I like the freedom to say what's on my mind, so now I pay and don't deal with those pushing *the narrative* because they never seem to have any money to put where their mouth is. So I'm here, through thick and thin, because you and Hank helped me to see my way past all of the problems I had with RPG's in the 80's and 90's and why I abandoned them for CRPG's. I agree with you, TTRPG's are communion and time spent with people is what it's all about. So thank you and looking forward to the future.

steven bray

Completely off topic but there's something I'm curious about and maybe there's a video idea. Why do you use modules? Or maybe a video about how to create your own "module". I'd love to hear more about the create process you use.

Frederic Schmitt

Still enough system agnostic quality content in my opinion. Maybe I'll even play a D20 system if the full fledged deathbringer comes out one day :D

Matthew Cacy

I enjoy your content and extended videos. I always looked at the "clickbait" videos as a necessary evil to keep the channel successful. Frankly, I don't mind being informed on the state of corporate D&D and it continues to validate my decision to abandon D&D and support independent games. The crafting, campaign design, campaign diaries are what I live for on this channel, and if I have to watch news about the hobby every once in a while, so be it. Keep up the great work!

@PirateSoftware aka Thor on YouTube says you should uncheck "Notify subscribers" because a lot of your subscribers have dead accounts. So the algorithm is putting your video in front of nobody and when nobody clicks the algorithm buries it. But if you don't check that box, he says, it is put in front of only actual live people. True engaged followers will find it, he says. IDK. Might be worth a shot.

James C

Taylor Swift scandal clickbait??? Deathbringer truly is evil. I for one don’t get upset at clickbait. Sometimes as content providers, you have to play the system. Like all sales, “getting people to walk through the doors” is often the greatest challenge. Once they are in, they will either like your content and stick around or move on. How they got there really won’t matter in the end.

Ben Waters

It might be worth changing the way you pre-release your videos on Patreon. There have been times that I've already seen a video on Patreon with the extended content so when it pops up on youtube it isn't 'new to me' and so there's less incentive to click it asap. Obviously I like having it earlier on patreon but if the algorithm is such a killer, pre-releasing might do you more damage than good.

Brian Carthey

I discovered your channel because the algorithm pointed me to a clickbait of yours last year! Thank you for giving me a little more insight how it works and what I can do to help you and others I really enjoy!

Brian Carthey

Sure do and my partner listens to you too! We really appreciate that you do a whole range of content but especially the crafting tips. She’s taken a deep plunge into the crafting end of the hobby! Thanks again for everything! We rolled a 20 finding you!

David R. Howard

This was an illuminating video, and it certainly prompted my wife and I to ensure that we watch videos within the first 24 hours of release...and comment "I love ALL _____ videos."
