How Scripted is Critical Role

Excited to watch Professor

The Blind Bard

Me too. I liked what he said about a need for urgency. Maybe that’s what my games are missing. I definitely have to DM more so I can get used to improv.

Terra Jones

that would be a long script to do in two takes, live, weekly.

Drago Russo

THIS is why I love your channel so much. The ideas I get from you. The 24 countdown is an amazing idea. A mechanic where every time X happens the number ticks down and if it reaches zero before the players can achieve X then bam! Great idea and yes do a video on that.

Dear PDM, Uggh, not another Critical Role click bait video. I know anything with Matt Mercer drives clicks but he is the Taylor Swift of D&D: over hyped, over exposed, and over done. I have Mercer fatigue and am so very weary.... "Critical Role's players are trained improv actors", EXACTLY, and that is the problem! Mercer and his players do this for a living. In my opinion Critical Role has been bad for GMs and players, it sets unrealistic expectations of what a D&D game should look like. Your overall point about organization is well taken, almost everything goes better and more smoothly with good planning. I would like to see a series of videos going through the chapters of XDM or So You Want To Be A Gamemaster, inter-weaving your processes and experience and how you have applied some of this knowledge. In closing, I am appreciative of your hard work and enjoy hearing your thoughts and opinions. Best, MrGunn PS: So many missed an opportunities for DB to say something more pitiless like: Now that Fresh Cut Grass is composting.... or Now that Fresh Cut Grass is in the offal pit... or Now that Fresh Cut Grass has been bailed... or Now that Fresh Cut Grass is a steaming cow paddy...

@The Blind Bard Check out some of PDM's older videos which address game pacing techniques, that may help.

Matthew Crismali

I'm glad these Critical Role videos are just clickbait for info that is actually useful to players of actual RPGs and not just more coverage of the boring D&D improv show that is Critical Role. Good video. Keep it up!

Lee Dunning

I love the idea of a fantasy version of 24. That's a perfect.

Scott

Some very good points I will try to keep in mind next time I'm GMing.

Matthew Crismali

Ditto, but if this is the worst I have to put up with for the channel to grow and to continue to get great content from PDM, I'll put up with it.

Scott Spears

I teach screenwriting and always love the idea of a hot start, then drop in back story later.

GM James

Absolutely fantastic stuff, professor! You're consistently putting out the best advice I've ever gotten for writing and running games!

The Mando Commando

My wife does not like CR as she believes it creates unrealistic expectations on DMs and players due in large part that is played by actors and actors are real good liars especially if they follow some kind of script. I did have to pull out my acting and filmmaking hat and speak from MY experience. I told her I couldn't comment one way or the other as even improv follos a "loose personal script" I do think certain character beats are discussed and planned prior and the reactions are over the top but I told her that's not inherently a bad thing; they're performers and even the best improvisers need some level of structure and foresight. Unfortunately, even that didn't convince her lol but I respect her opinion as she is very much a non-conformist and doesn't like how their fans and community at large glosses over what we know what what they show us.

Keith

I have had the opposite experience. I don't watch Critical Role (CR), except maybe when PDM uses a CR episode as an example. And I really appreciate that. I think it makes great examples, because I can go back and watch all the player and GM interactions. @PDM, I find you comments about CR's campaign 3 especially interesting because I tried watching campaign 3, but lost interested in the middle of the first episode.

Keith

Does anyone have an episode reference for where Matt says "I'm dangerously close to losing control of this narrative" ?
