Bagel-Man

Excited to see your take on this PDM

Elizabeth Rowe

I could see a three minute game break at the start of each game day, and then hand in your spell list of the day. You can find one good idea in anything, even this list.

Scott Spears

I think you nailed the situation. Kids learning to be adults.

Anthony Johnston

I think more can & should be expected from "kids" 17+ yrs old. You're lettin them off the hook too easy IMO. Yes, they are still learning to be adults, but I know plenty of kids much younger than those players that know & behave better. Just like we all know adults 40+ who never matured past age 14 in one or more aspects of their life ($, love, responsibility, discipline, whatever). They all need a heavy dose of Deathbringer reality. Great vid PDM!

Ben McInnis

Running game groups at that age is tough; especially nowadays. There are far more distractions than we had when we were that age and while one person may be gung-ho to game, the others may be more cavalier about the notion. There is also the fact that that cognitive development is not yet complete; particularly in males of this apparent age group, so the level of dedication the DM is asking for is hit or miss. The video was great, PDM! Hopefully, this crew sees it. I think they could get a great deal put of it.

Scott

I would agree, sounds like a younger group. The GM has a lot of good points, just the way he's presenting it is (imo) overly aggressive.

Adam

Been playing with graph paper and grids since 1983. Sorry not something I am willing to give up. I like them, I have found the confusion of zones, theater of the mind just slows things down for me. Honest there are only about 3-4 actual 'rules' I disagree with (if you read this without the tone ... the players in this group must really suck) ... its the consequences and tone I don't like with this list. Instant death traps are unfun.

Adam

My first group was rough, it was in the group home in the 80s and there were actual fist fights over loot, character death and other stuff... the game almost got band. We were rough kids I guess. But they were not as bad as this DM's group I think.

Matthew Crismali

Great video as always. One note: you may want to consistently censor the 44 rules text before posting on YouTube. I noticed that sometimes the text was censored and sometimes the f-bombs were in full view. Up to you, but I thought I'd mention it.

Walter

"To my players, taking drugs is taking Aleve." Good one. This whole list reminds me of a book Monte Cook put out a few years ago called Your Best Game Ever. The only difference is that the guy who wrote that post needs a break. This guy comes off as an "adversarial GM" which are just downright awful.

David Stewart

You mentioned 3 nat 20s this actually happened to me. I ran a one shot for my in law and wife’s siblings. I roll 3 d20s and take lowest to speed up and make the pc seem powerful. They cast a spell and I rolled 3 d20s at once to save and ran out the room as soon as I saw them. The in laws thought that meant they succeeded lol I’m still teaching them. lol

Prof you said the magic words that immediately made me think: "What we have here is a failure to communicate. Some men, you just can't reach. So you get what we had here last week -- which is the way he wants it. Well, he gets it. And I don't like it anymore than you men." This angry DM could have just used these quotes from Cool Hand Luke.

samurguybri

I can tell that you are both a parent and an educator. You have a ton of understanding and compassion for these young people. “The internet” just wants to judge and slam folk, but you brought in some nuance and insight into the situation. A young friend of mine started playing with us and was cheating on his rolls. I took him aside and talked about it and told him that failure move the game foreward, too. I also gave him 100 xp for every failed roll (secretly). He changed, matured and now runs games himself!!! Great guy. Kid need help and guidance, not just shame and judgment.

Lee Dunning

My friends and I must have been weird teenagers. We never acted like that during our game sessions.

Jay

PDM, you draw some interesting conclusions in you analysis of these 44 Rules. I suspect you are likely more correct than not in your suspicions of who wrote this and their level of maturity. I too can empathize with the GM and his frustration yet clearly see a more diplomatic path in dealing with the players. Question - When you mentioned your son joining the army, are you speaking of your son Michael? War veterans such as myself really feel a sense of pride when young capable men sign up to serve. Young guys like Michael are precisely they type of bright, tough young men the service actually need right now more than ever. God bless him and thank him for his service. You have a wonderful family and I'm sure I'm not the only one on here who feels this way. Thanks again for all you do and hope your health is steadily improving.

Frederic Schmitt

I don’t use X, neither do I have a Redit account. I think this GM should find another group.

Jeff Jones

"The GM can ban anything" should also be in the Player's Handbook.

MrGunn

Dear Professor Dungeon Master: I liked your take on the Engraged DM's 44 Invectives. I think your analysis of the issues and the author was spot on. Other than the language and the immature 'punishments' for players actions, I did not have an issue with many of the author's points and do not understand the blow back he got. The authors is correct to point out that players should show up on time, sober, ready to play with dice, character sheet and pencil in hand; players should be courteous to each other and the GM; players should be paying attention so when their turn comes around they are ready; wizard players should hand in their prepared spells; players and GM should roll dice in the open and at the appropriate times; players should not cheat. I really appreciated your mature responses, your experience as a public school teacher who has years of experience dealing with teenagers was evident in your assessment of the GM and his players, and your advice was thoughtful and kind. In closing, as I commented on Bob World Builders YouTube on this same topic: "sure they are harshly written by an abused and angry DM, but he ain't wrong." I will continue to pray for your recovery and wish you all the best this Father's Day. Best, MrGunn

@Fredic Schmitt Ich stimme zu, Social Media ist der Teufel!

And most of the time it’s also a waste of time. Time I rather spend at the table, playing TTRPGs or planing to run the next game 😅

Scott Mckay

I have to admit some of my earlier games had players that made me feel very similar to this game master I had to cut out a lot of players as time went on. To me this has been the "last straw" snap hopefully players grow and GM chills.

Scott Mckay

Also, I forgot to say on the charisma point to me it's like an auto-solve for everything even stronger than magic... in the right/wrong player's hands. If used sparingly it can have amazing moments but spam it... becomes the one-man boring show. I think people forget how OP charisma is It is the best stat for real life.

Tuska

The dude has some points. Not all but some of those rules are legit.

Terra Jones

I saw this and while some bullets were valid points, others made me say "are these people even friends?" He comes across as rather dramatic and imperious. Some of these cheating issues should not be dealt with with in game consequences but should instead be a conversation. Forget failures of exhaustion levels. His players need to be less rude but he could also find new players where he doesn't have to do any of this.

Jim Havoc

After about rule 15 I realized he should just start a new group. If the problems persist he should probably check his shoes.

Jeff Krus

If Only I can get my high school students to become more mature... hahaha 😆

Jeff Krus

I really enjoyed this a lot!! Commutation, communication, communication is the key... but i do like a lot of these point they just could have been worded better imo. Also get well soon ok... P.S. My daughter also served in the Marines. Thank your son for his service....
