PDM analyzes leaked statements from WoTC and analyzes how the VTT crashed and burned. I am not feeling well and this is my 2nd video in 3 days. I need some rest and may be slow to respond. Thank you for understanding.

SIGIL In Trouble

Thanks for covering the leak. I wasn't sure of Rascal's credentials, so it's good to hear they are reputable. Very disappointing about Sigil, but I have TaleSpire, so I think I'll manage. I assume the Sigil mobile support is dead in the water at this point, which will be a big problem for a lot of people. I hope you feel better soon. Get some rest!

Andrea (Maurizio)

Thanks for the update. Please take care of yourself and get the needed rest.

As someone who works for one of those Fortune 500 corporations, yep, the bureaucracy is horrible. Oh and then there's all those VP's up the chain who will massage the data to make themselves look better to the higher ups. Of course, this happens until the house of cards collapses.

John

Take care. I hope you feel better soon.

Dave Ciappio

It’s unfortunate. The VTT had some potential but it just turned out to be trash

This is what happens when companies try to shape their audience/customers instead of trying to retain them. Ask Hollywood and Disney how that’s working for them. Very few CEOs are capable of shaping their base (ie Steve Jobs) and let’s face it, Hasbro/WotC does not have a generational visionary like Jobs. It’s a shame. D&D was such a big part of my teenage years and watching it crash and burn like this is saddening.

Capitialism, left to its own devices, will kill anything it touches. You have to love the product you make and love to people who buy it, no matter what it is. If you look only to the bottom line, you will utimately fail.

Bagel-Man

Nice video as always PDM

I was concerned when Sigil was released on DDB but wasn't available for Mac. This is not unusual; many games do not initially come out on Mac, but they usually list an expected release date for Mac. As always, thanks for everything you do, and please get some rest.

"It's not working out." - Hilarious!

I've felt for a long time that wotc as a company, was lost. Well said, PDM, in that it doesn't know its products and it thinks its market is an entirely different market than what it actually is. For a company that is based on individual and collective creativity, it continues to fire its creators and abuse the creative community that supports it products. Having lived/played through the TSR to wotc transition, at this point I'd say about wotc "good riddance".

Walter

"Deworseification" I laughed out loud at that one. I don't do stocks but a company that's gotten my attention recently with what's going on in Europe: Rheinmetall

Scott

I consider it really telling just how inefficient (and seemingly incompetent) they are that they have been working on a VTT since they were working on 4th Edition as it was supposed to release with a VTT as part of it, and that was back in 2008, so they've been working on one for almost 20 years (possibly that or longer depending on how long they were working on 4e before release) and they still haven't been able to put a decent one together while several much smaller companies all have.

Dave Ciappio

I really do wish it was better, but the way it is now it’s SO slow and constantly crashes. I do plan on trying out talespire. My son recently left for the military and it would be fun to keep a game going with him

baldrage

I can hear THACO the Clown laughing.

They are at a serious impasse here. WOTC / Hasbro both have completely lost the ability to understand what the selling points of their products are. The thing is, they themselves alienated most of the people they would need to buy in on d&d stuff even if they made a solid course correction. But hey, Who else is excited for the Western Reaches?!

Scott Miller

Hope you feel better soon. This does seem like an example of too many cooks in the kitchen each with their own recipe.

Dear PDM, But, but, they promised corporations are so much more responsible and efficient than… For profit corporations are amoral creatures whose only motive is growth and profits. They are managed by human beings and subject to all the same foibles and shortcomings of being so. Remember, “Don’t be evil”, no, neither does Google. Moreover most large organizations become staid and lose their ability to innovate because bureaucratic stability and entrenched self-interest become more important than the organization’s mission. Mavericks and those who dare to question the status quo or suggest changes are oftentimes ignored, sidelined, or silenced. The result is ‘grey man syndrome’ where the organization is lead by bland unimaginative leaders who are incapable of generating new ideas or of innovating. Grey leaders can only absorb other innovators and then often stifle the very creativity they acquired them for. Only a crisis or recognition of a need for change due to outside disruption can impel necessary organizational change. Sears Roebuck is a case study in grey man syndrome. For 99 years Sears led in the fulfillment of shipping goods to customers via mail order. Yet at the dawn of the digital age they failed to innovate, and so ten years after the founding of Amazon Sears was effectively dead having declared bankruptcy in 2005. Oh it lingered on in its death throes but Sears would never recover. A company who had everything necessary to be a power house in the buy on line world died due to the hobgoblin of little grey minds. So here we sit with Hasbro and Wizards who own one of the most recognized brands in the industry missing nearly every opportunity to succeed due to small minded grey leaders. I applaud Hasbro for trying to innovate, and for avoiding the sunk cost fallacy. However their utter bungling failure of execution from ideation thru cancellation is a symptom of the issues at the top. Until the grey men are replaced, I see no positive changes in the future. Thanks for providing your analysis of this on-going story. Feel better soon. Best regards, MrGunn

MrGunn

@Walter Ahh, good old Rheinmetall AG, making weapons to kill people since 1889. Political leaders often don’t survive wars, but corporations sure do.

As long as we have committed Players and DMs the hobby survives!

After 30 years in corporate, I am confident that the successful ones are so DESPITE themselves. Success is rarely due to providing a superior product or service. More often, it results from share-holder perception based on the resulting massaged numbers due to stock buy-backs, layoffs, monopolistic acquisitions, etc.

Nerdronomicon

As an early supporter of Rascal, I have been very disappointed in their journalism. In particular, Chase Carter calling Ben Milton a nazi sympathizer for not responding "correctly" to a problematic advertiser without even allowing Milton to respond was concerning.

Jay

PDM, thanks for the well covered news update and your thoughts. I had some of my own yet is seems I would only be echoing many of the posts made on this thread. I may not use VTT yet I still find it interesting to see how WoTC keeps stepping on the same rake over and over again.

MrGunn

@Jay 🤣🤣🤣 same rake, good stuff. As a man who has accidentally stepped on a rake, that bit never gets old, comedy gold.
