Derivative is kind of a catchall criticism for "bad" if film circles. There is not all that much originality in Hollywood films. They have their own tropes so you know who the first person to die in horror movie, when the cop is going to get shot by the terrorist, when the complication to the heist is coming, and such. Hollywood does not like original because that is a gamble, this is why they remake ip's so often... look at how many Batman movies there are to Lobo movies. A Batman film is garenteed profit, even if it is terrible. Issue is if you can do it well or not, and Hollywood is not known for a love or knowledge of d&d.

Personally, if they weren't doing this as a comedy, I'd like to see something a bit more toned down in power and effects and more in line with Game of Thrones. CGI and overwhelming viewers with too much from the game will only ruin things. They will need to market to those who know nothing of the game just as much as those who love the game in order to achieve their bottom line....Money and an audience who will pay to see a sequel.
