“First, your return to shore was not part of our negotiations nor our agreement so I must do nothing. And secondly, you must be a pirate for the pirate's code to apply and you're not. And thirdly, the code is more what you'd call "guidelines" than actual rules.” Captain Barbossa would have made a great DM.

Fantastic Rantifesto! I agree with pretty much every point. It's a game not a religion, it's an iPhone not a holy relic. Rules simply define the parameters for making decisions that require chance to decide between two variables. Any rule that does not contribute to the fun quotient is a candidate for elimination.

The best games I ever played in and the best ones I've run were the ones where the players really didn't know the rules at all. They just imagined what they wanted to do, said it and we ran with it.

I've been running a game for my friends for 18 months now - none of them had played D&D before and we started with Lost Mines which was excellent. For the new campaign I wanted to streamline the rules after watching PDM's awesome videos and.... my players hated it. I don't know why but they love the number crunching and the more dice they have to roll, the happier they are. It was hard to let go of my dream of fast combat but they're a great group so we do it their way.

This! This is why I started watching your channel and became a patron. Don't use it if it doesn't work for you and your table. Fantastic!!

On the boring role playing games... Rifts. I loved reading those books, and always thought it would be so fun to play, so bonkers. Then you sit down to make a character and play, and it turned into a multi hour slog just to play a single round of combat. Maybe some people have the rules down so much that it is fast for them, but for us it was just painful.

I have run into the exact same scenario with my group. They are a little younger than I am and watch alot of what I would call rules heavy D&D YouTube. Always bothering me with the new unearthed arcana rules, the latest $60 splat book, Dungeon Dudes, Critical Role, etc. Don't get me wrong I like all those things but I don't try to incorporate everything from them and these guys treat it like its gospel. Anyway, I'm just glad to be playing anything.

Wondering if most of the comments that spurred this video came from the YouTube audience. Hmm...Never made or have seen comments like that made from the Patreon audience and I've been watching since your first video back several years ago. Still, good idea making the video to answer the same redundant questions or arguments. That must get annoying. Also, I'm pretty sure most people homebrew in one way or another.

I want my players to act in the fiction (rather than the tangency of the rule) I added my own bit there is my new moto for playing at my table. That needs to be in print!

My favorite version of D&D is Troll Lord's Castles and Crusades.

Good video! Chuckled at the 'think critically' comment from educators. Be independent! Just raise your hand and be excused to use the restroom... oh and no drinks in the classroom. By the way, you need to wake up completely in opposition to your body-clock and at odds with your need for sleep. On and on. Factory fun!

My favorite system of all time is the Hero System 4th Ed. That does not stop me playing others. As that is a generic system, in my youth I spent too much time trying to convert other systems to it. Today, wiser and older and with less time, I use the system that fits what we are doing.

Also, I think I'd love to talk with you about education!

I enjoyed the enhancements you made to this video. The original version has long been one of my favorites.

I have always thought it odd that a game that is imagination and group story telling has so many rules lawyers. I have been a dungeon master for decades and the first thing I learned was take what you want from all the books (all systems) and pass on what does not work for your group. House rules exist in every game genre for a reason. Just saying.
