PDM turns a critical eye to the new Basic Set.

If this video does not work, try a different OS or device. That will probably fix it.

This one is working fine!

DB, Matt Colville, really, that guy is a hack! PDM is way better than that guy; now if you had said Sly Flourish....

Good Review. Sounds like they did a decent job with it. I do love that there is a dragon early on. Somehow they don't come up enough. I also fully agree on bullet points, but maybe that is my MBA talking.

I like the review! I do have a comment on monsters but nothing bad (I swear!) Running into Kobolds with a Lawful Good alignment I think in a roundabout way will help players from consulting combat abilities every time they come across an encounter. It seems so strange but it is almost like the players got a 12 on a 2d6 reaction roll and get to experience what it is like when it isn't always attack everything on sight - which in turn trains the players to be creative and considerate with the approach. It is almost a perfect way to teach a new GM how to incorporate something like a reaction roll, and to consider what monsters are in the middle of doing to vary encounters.

I prefer the imperial approach. Monsters are barbarians and therefore evil, PCs don't need to consider the monsters 'feelings'. What is this a namby pamby hippy commune or D&D; just kill them and take their stuff! :D

Don’t get mad because of some lawful good kobolds. They can be fun for sure. And WotC just don’t want the be responsible for telling a new or young audience „this race is all evil“. I can understand that. But as a GM or as a group all together we can decide to play in whatever world we want. We can play in a world were all humans are evil. It’s our game.

Great content but it felt like two videos smushed into one. I’d rather see the detailed how to play content pulled out and put in its own video with the briefest of reviews and then there wouldn’t be a couple minutes of that in the midst of this good review.

I do have one bone to pick with you, sir! The title was misleading. I thought they were coming out with an updated BASIC set edition based on the title and got excited. D&D Starter Set Review is the more correct title.

Thank you so much for calling out how important layout is. Even old school modules included stat blocks and of course the removable map covers which doubled as a screen. I have long wanted a book that just collects the many great tables in the PH and DMG that are hard to find buried in so much text.

Not into that style of play, but I respect it. The conceit of the dungeon is a mythic underworld and the things in it want to kill you is a hallowed trope. I however, love the potential weirdness of having sentient monsters be able to have varied reactions to the party. In my ideal: ditch alignment except for strongly aligned spiritual beings, describe monster motivations, fears and inter group conflicts and then let the reaction dice tell a story that could surprise the players and the DM.

Im’ so glad they gave good DMing advice and was super stoked to see the “rhythm of play” section. This has been too long missing in the DnD books. What are the game loops of the “pillars” of the the system? Explain them! help a DM do them at the table!

Graham Kane

Anyway, monsters' alignment becomes a irrelevant if they are simply diametrically opposed to the PC's. If they want what the party wants or need to eat the PC's to survive then they will fight no matter what!
