PDM analyzes HOW WoTC will monetize One D&D. I know the outro has a weird pause. It's been corrected in the YouTube version. Thank you! --PDM

I've been gaming for 40 years. They should be paying ME to play.

John

Started in '79 with the Red Box, I totally agree. I think micro transactions are likely to push more folks who have straddle "official" and "homebrew" into the "homebrew" camp. RPGs for me have always been about the face to face socializing. I have less than no interest in a digital line.

Chuck Thorin

Great Video. I'm with you. More Old School. More Homebrew.

MrGunn

Bagel-Man thou art slow...everything ok?

Daniel Defazio

I'm just behind schedule. The Reviled Society slowed me down. Working a new video tomorrow. Have to leave for a Christmas party shortly.

MrGunn

So much to unpack here PDM

Lee Caddick

I think PDM is under monetised, I would totally buy a set of his campaign minis and terrain. A much better project and use of cash in my opinion. So close to 100k!

stormwulf47

Great video! I'm glad to hear you are gonna do the videos you want to do. Can't wait to see more content!

DmChef

Happy New Year PDM. Love your analysis, candor and humor. Have a great holiday with your family. -DmChef

Richie Walker

I’m coming with you in your post one d&d old school direction. Not going anywhere.great stuff. Keep up the good work.

Karl

Yes! Now that we’ve reached 100,000 adherents, blow it up! Can’t wait to see that video.

Cal Pearson

Creativity and OG Social Networking (aka table games) are gravity bound to what fantasy, pulp and sci-fi gaming are all about. One has not lived until you've played a hacked wild west game system portraying the modern "Westworld" story. GM did not reveal who was a "Host" and which players were "Guests" until mid way through the session. OSR & DIY are my an gaming groups steak and potatoes. PDM - Chive On!

Jay

BRAVO!!! Going OSR or even homebrew is better than being bled out by a subscription platform that will likely be dwarfed by Elder Scrolls 6 when it releases. WoTC can pound sand! If online is your thing I say go for it. It's just not for me or my group. Just my two cents.

Anthony Campla

I'm actually encouraged to hear you'll be leaning more to the OSR. My journey has been AD&D as a kid in the 90s -> back in with 5e as an adult -> OSR / homebrew as a full time DM. Looking forward to staying with you through the ebbs and flows of the hobby PDM.

Matthew Cacy

Good points all around. Aside from how lucrative the 'pay to play' (or 'pay to win' it sounds like), I think that WOTC is also trying to cripple the 3rd party market. It's not WOTC is going to let players upload 3rd party mods to One DnD.

Nathaniel Bennett

I've DM'd every official version of D&D since 1980. I've given up 5E and have zero interest in One D&D's walled garden micro-transaction hell. Long live the OSR and high five to PDM for carrying the torch.

Stephen Kotowych

Excited to hear you're moving more deliberately into the OSR/homebrew vein. That's the PDM content that drew me to the channel in the first place and reignited my love of RPGs

Brad F

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year PDM!

Jon Rennick

Merry Christmas, looking forward to seeing where you take the channel!

Scott Spears

I agree, we will see two D&Ds, in-person diehards and the folks who love screens. I am currently playing in a campaign that started in person but with COVID and then a player moving out of town, we're on-line. It's a reasonable copy of the experience (minus the snack sharing) but I miss the sitting across the table feel. I think micro-transactions are ok, If we buy real world minis, they cost money so why shouldn't digital minis cost something. The design work and coding doesn't come for free. That's capitalism. I will still pick real world to digital. Good insights in the video.

samurguybri

Come along for the ride? You son of a bitch, I’m in! I do like t your analysis and predictions and do like to hear where the big part of the hobby is heading, but maybe I’ll get that from other folks.

Joel A.

Just watched. 2023 is going to be an interesting year. Looking even more forward to this channel.

Joel A.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New York as well 😊

"Zero interest in One D&D's walled garden micro-transaction hell. Long live the OSR." Great turn of phrase! If you put that on a t-shirt, I'd buy it.

Lee Caddick

Congratulations! I've been checking daily for the last couple of weeks to see when you'd hit it.

baldrage

Congrats on cracking 100K! Looking forward to the channel going all-out on the OSR and horror (can we get some modern CoC and/or Delta Green?). Although, I will miss the opportunity to bash 5E in the comments section of your videos...

Daniel Defazio

Lol. I'll still talk 5e a bit. I think Seth Skorkowsky covers CoC and Delta Green better than I could. We'll see.

Matthew Crismali

I'm so happy for you reaching your goal of 100k subscribers on YouTube. I'm also happy to hear that the channel will be steering more toward the OSR. I hope you show non-OSR indie games some love as well. I didn't think I would like the analysis videos but you do such a great job you draw me in. My favorite videos of yours though, are the ones about homebrew rules. I have a better understanding of the building blocks of an RPG than I ever have in the past thanks to you. Good luck, Dan!

Graham Kane

Wonderful news on the 100K subscribers! I'm also delighted to hear you're going in a more OSR direction and to be honest I could'nt imagine you going any other way! Like you I've little to no interest in 1D&D. No doubt it WILL be a big success and D&D will remain top of the pile but I think it's inevitable that many players will jump in a more OSR direction which is great news. Happy Christmas and looking forward to 2023's content.

Ajax

Video not available on You Tube right now, and none of the videos here are playing. Never had a problem before.

Bagel-Man

Just life stuff, all my friends are home from college, I’ve been hanging out with them a lot :P

Bagel-Man

Congrats on the 100k, whatever you do with the channel, I’m gonna stay and watch. This shit is awesome!

Brent Norton

Been here since the Caves and will be here after. Congratulations.

Based support of capitalism.

Adam Maag

I also think it’s important to mention that it’s not a binary bit a spectrum. I,like many I assume, fall somewhere in the middle. Hopefully Hasbro will allow for a more ala carte experience. Hopefully they will make it easy enough to cancel or stop subscription. Either way I’ll be along for the ride PDM you’ve made my game better.

Craig McKenzie

Congratulations on reaching 100,000 subscribers, well deserved!

Jared Davis

I’m curious to see how this will all play out over time. My preferred RPGs use OSR or Powered by the Apocalypse 2d6 (i.e. DungeonWorld) core mechanics. However, the others in my main gaming group prefer 5e and will likely want to adopt One D&D. It’s like you’ve said previously, “It’s all D&D to me.” (Thanks for the great line Billy Joel.)

MrGunn

Not all that glitters is gold, not all those who wander are lost.

MrGunn

Bagel-Man, good to hear you are ok, be well Happy Holidays!

MrGunn

Well said Jay! Now PDM needs to go all Gamma World post-apoc on his channel!

The Byronic Ted

The problem is that you never really own the digital mini. You only rent access to it. That can be taken away or made more expensive anytime WotC wants. Big difference to physical minis or books. Even now they won´t sell you website independent pdfs of the books.

The Byronic Ted

Bravo to the 100,000 subscriptions Professor! Well deserved!

Jonny Himes

Yes, more OSR! And please do more "module" design in your notebook with marginalia of taverns, etc.

Staffaramus

Fear Monger? Nah you've been right at every turn. More DMs have will to leave / go full Homebrew as shard previously the DM has to spend the most money

MrGunn

Never mind... I thought you might be Kane of Kane's Kiln.

Jose Perez (Bromos Sunstar)

Yeah I don't understand all the backlash against One D&D. Why is it a big deal to the OSR gamers. is it really that big of a deal that WOTC is creating a successful D&D franchise finally, something that Gary Gygax tried and failed to do back in the '70s and '80s. Besides growing your brand is the American way, the ultimate goal of any brand / business its simple capitalism. It's amusing how the old and new "Ben" generation of Grognards get riled when anything new comes from WOTC.

MrGunn

The official video just posted just a bit ago, I watched to the bitter end, liked, and commented. Congratulations on reaching the 100K YouTubes subscribers and Platinum downloads for DeathBringer on DTRPG milestones. My YouTubes comment below: "Indeed Hasbroceana and their WotC flunkies have made a HUGE investment in digital, the 350 programmers they hired are an approximately USD 70M annual OpEx spend on top of the one time charge of USD 146M for D&DBeyond*. You are dang right they want to get their money back and they want some of that sweet sweet recurring moolah from those 13M subscribers. I am with der volk on this one, more in person, more Grim more Dark, less digital!" * Can someone tell me, is the D&DBeyond acquisition CapEx, I think it is?

Scott P

@Jose I think the worry is that it wil evolve into a sort of MMORPG with pay-to-play (a given), AND pay for power-ups (which turns a game into a spending ontest that ultimately kills it). The quote PDM refrenced doesn't guarentee the later, but it doesn't help. The other criticism, is that if some or all of the rules get moved to the platform to manage, it vastly limits the scope for house rules, or the ability of a DM to decide which rules do not fit in the game they're running. On the positive side, it does look like it could be a much more immersive experience. I have never been big on theatre of the mind. I like the tactical nature of playing with minis on a defined space. But that is also more Warhammer than D&D, and that is the mode of play I prefer.

James M Spahn

"I'm gonna be moving in a more OSR direction" I AM 100% HERE FOR THIS.

Christopher Gauci

I in the OSR already... Waiting for all the d&d oners to catch up😂

The Old DM

Not to worry, PDM. Us grognards will stick around. :) As I'm a 3.5e DM, I never played that super-hero fantasy game called 5e, so glad you and a few others have said they will stick with the older concepts of D&D.

Kevin Beck

I'll dump D&D entirely if they actually monetize the game to this extent. Ok not entirely, I just won't do 1 D&D.
