I just found out Fiend Folio illustrator Russ. Nicholson passed away today. Much respect to this iconic artist. No extended material, but you get it early. This video airs tomorrow on YouTube.

Nicely done. Fiend Folio is the only old school D&D book from my youth that I simply had to repurchase and it was largely due to Russ's incredible artwork which set this book apart from all the others.

This is such sadness. At a young age in the early 80’s, the Fighting Fantasy books were inexplicably available at my school book faire and I eagerly purchased them. His art depicted the world inside these creepy, hostile places. It shape my vision of what fantasy was, as well. I also remember, like other British art and fantasy of the 80’s that there were often peeks of humor or emotion in the drawings: a goblin picking it’s nose, mischievous pixies cavorting, some person being made fool of by tiny things. Good stuff. RIP Russ.

Very sad to hear this. The Fighting Fantasy books were my first exposure to RPG’s back in the 80’s and his wonderful illustrations had a colossal impact on me.

I still have my original Fiend Folio, in great shape. I use it to drop creatures my party has never seen. His art still creeps me out.
