Wow! I guess you will be quicker than Bob the world builder for once :o I am sad for all the fans who still play the vanilla version of "The Game".

I think this has been pretty much expected. As long as DMs and Players have access to physical media they neither want nor need microtransactions. Of course, I never adopted much of TGtE and none of MotM, and really don't even care. The good thing I see here is it opens up the market even more for actual TTRPG gamers to the Independent game designers, as WotC effectively quiting the field...so maybe this is an Independent Games Month article!

Jay

Yep! This was predictable. Look forward to PDM's insight on this one.

Sad if true. End of an era 😞

I think we all saw this coming, but much like the wife who desperately wants to believe that her abusive husband loves her, many fans kept hoping for the day that WotC wouldn’t smack them around anymore. Looks like the community might be free from them after all.

Before we knee jerk, let's take a collective breath. There is a rumor circulating based on an assumption that Wizards of the Coast (WotC) has discontinued the sale of individual physical books. However, the factual information is that WotC now sells physical books bundled with digital formats on their website. This move addresses a common complaint from the community regarding the need to purchase both physical and digital versions separately. Despite recent criticism towards WotC, it's important to note that this decision aligns with community demands. It's worth mentioning that WotC's physical books can still be purchased on Amazon. Additionally, as they release new editions for D&D books in various physical and digital formats, it is expected that there will be a wind-down and marketing shift. To the best of my knowledge, WotC has not made any announcements regarding the discontinuation of physical books. The assumption of such a move appears to be a knee-jerk reaction, fueling rumors, and speculation. The bundling of books and digital content is a response to community feedback and an effort to appease their concerns.

See, I don't want to buy from Amazon. I would, if I were ever to buy an official book new again, buy from my local game store. WotC is going out of their way to kill off the businesses of the people who made D&D so popular and accessible to so many people. I only buy game books online if they aren't available anywhere else, and then only sparingly. This is another nail in the coffin when it comes to WotC when it comes to me. There are plenty of other game companies that deserve my attention.

Tuska

Meh. WotC is dead to me. There are still plenty of great, D&D OSR games being made so to heck with WotC.

Agree - I feel the same. My point was that stating "WotC stops making physical books" is not exactly true and is a rumor based on conjecture. I value Prof DM and DungeonCraft, I wish to inform him prior to him stating something that may not be accurate. It is far too easy to jump on the bandwagon. Of course, I personally believe Prof DM is careful and articulate, yet I would feel remiss if I did not share. Side Note: I live in remote Portugal, my only access to any TTRPGs is either Amazon.de or Amazon.es or PDF. There are no local game stores or even book stores that carry any TTRPG books.
