Bagel-Man

Excited to watch this once I get home PDM!

So sad Trader (Traitor?) Joe did not make the cut!

Jay

Great stories of unplanned NPCs! Suppose impromptu sometimes works in ways you don't expect.

Rob Edgar

Ahhh - memories! Timmy was Da (diminutive) Man!

Chuck Thorin

Great vid. Yep, I've lots of improved NPC's that became party favorites like Bob the Hireling who became Bob the Fighter. My current problem is the players keep taking a liking to the big bad villian?

Thanks for this. It sort of gives me permission NOT to preset NPC personalities. I always think I need to or I’m some kind of bad DM.

i run an 'evil' 5E game and have for about 3 years. Their favourite NPC's are all dead, and havr all been what spurs the story, mostly vengeance. It's a damn blast. BUT it is never the npc's i think it will be. Part of the fun for sure.

Dr. Shakes is my crews favorite NPC. Thick German accent(very Col. Clink) that doesn’t believe in magic.

PDM: I completely agree, throw away NPCs can take on a life of their own, and it is up to a good GM to recognize and exploit such great role-playing opportunities. For an example of what not to do; I played in a Call of Cthulhu: Masks of Nyarlhotep campaign with a rookie GM, During the course of the action the party came across two NPC toughs whom they rescued, Frankie and Chips. The PCs, we loved Frankie and Chips, and invited them along as henchmen. Sadly, instead of the GM embracing Frankie and Chips and making them interesting henchmen NPCs for the players to interact with, the GM ignominiously killed them off at the first opportunity, what a waste. The campaign broke up shortly after that due to some romantic drama between two of the PCs; I was not sorry to stop playing in that game. I tried very hard to help this GM, but he was not taking any hints or suggestions. Great video, I eagerly await your advice video on Hirelings and Henchmen. Regards, MrGunn

MrGunn

@Chuck Thorin Yes, villains can be very charming, just have them charmingly betray the PCs or kill someone or take something they love.

MrGunn

@Brian Oldfield A 'good' GM does not have to plan everything, start with a solid outline and improv the rest. The trick with impromptu beloved or loathed NPCs is to not force it, but to seize the opportunity when it presents itself.

MrGunn

PDM: Side question, are you now fully monetizing your Youtube channel with advertising, did I miss an announcement, I thought you were eschewing the lure of interwebs gold and bad intentions? Curious Regards, MrGunn

Chuck Thorin

They sort of learned in the current Deathbringer campaign. They didn't ally but did stay friendly so I brought in my back up villain who I like better. Professor Drageaux. Part Professor Moriarty, part Cardinal Richelieu, and part Victor Frankenstein.

Frederic Schmitt

The thumbnail is so oldschool. Also this video is fantastic. We need more stuff like this. xD

MrGunn

@Chuck Thorin Ooo, Dr Drageaux sounds a right vile villain.

I love this episode, my group has started our 11th session (we play monthly) and they just hired their first Henchman. A dwarf fighter they picked out of a full bar at the City Heroes Guild tavern. His name is Godfham Fulflare (got from an online name generator). We will we the fate, I my incorporate Grum's charge into battle at all vost gimmick. We will see how they do with him, lol.

MrGunn

@DungeonCraft Agreed, I tried to help him, I really did. He was not taking any feedback.

PDM continues to deliver top-notch content. A ton of insights in this one.
