WoTC just dropped Penguin Random House, Judge Academy, and its stock price cratering. Is this the end of D&D?

Excited to watch PDM!

Timothy S Wattigny

Not the clickbait we wanted, the clickbait we needed!

MrGunn

Greetings PDM, I hope you and your family are well. Thank you for producing another insightful video. Interesting points, I think you are generally correct. Wizbruhs CEO has a plan and if their board stays the course, we will see if it pays off. The CEO did make profit promises, so I expect he has another 18 months to pay off. There is also an activist shareholder in the wings, would like to hear what he is up to. A point of feedback, I was not happy you monetized your site, but I understand. However, I hated the commercial at the beginning of the video, I felt sleezed after watching it. I know YouTube DungeonCraft is your retirement plan, but yeech, can we keep it classy and not creepy? Just one guys smelly opinion... :D Thanks have a great week. Regards, MrGunn

Venmo what's says I'm not authorized to watch these videos. Any idea what's going on?

John

As far as recession goes, I'd say we are in one regardless of the official numbers. Between runaway inflation, particularly for durable goods like housing) and the games being played with the unemployment numbers (the government has been cooking the books sense Obama was in office by not counting people who are so disheartened they quit looking) the effective economy IS shrinking. There is less and less discretionary income and increasing household debt, insuring the discretionary says low as interest climbs (trying to slow the inflation itself) claiming any possible gains. So I'd have to say this is VERY similar to the last cycle you mention.

Masterhit

Nice video. I do like your gaming content best - but this is a nice bit of info I'd not have noted. One thing: your note above says Judge Guilds (Judges Guild??) instead of Judge Academy

I just feel like “old man shaking fist at clouds” in my life. I love books, I love the tabletop community. Like you, happy that VT exists, but will never use it unless I’m separated from my fellow gamers. I dislike the siloing of DnD. Brand identification baloney. Before I shook my fist at clouds,we loved other systems and finding out what things had been dice-ified! Cthulhu? Elfquest? Star Wars? Star Trek? Elric? WOW! We loved trying to learn new systems and trying them out. Taking ecology classes really helped me understand the importance of diversity in the survivability of a species and life. I think it will be the same for games. I don’t think any of us coelacanths and marsupials of games are dying off any time soon. We share the hobby, share the love and the spirt of curiosity and DIY and it will carry on. Like opossums or the common cold or something.

Stefan

I always enjoy your videos. However… it took 2 minutes to get to the content, and the intro commercial is bad. Very bad. It’s enough to make me dread hitting play. That really needs improvement.

I hope this brings a lot of clicks on YT. I think this one was rather boring. Don't get me wrong. It's nice to know and all that, but at this point in time for a GM like me it's not very important if Hasbro lives or dies and for all the DMs reading this (hi♥) they can get their fix from other companies and the game is basically free at this point. Greetings from Germany

WizBro can do as they like. I've already bought my Pathfinder books.

Daniel Defazio

I understand. DungeonCraft will always do a news video once in a while. Two more videos will be posted here later today. I think you'll enjoy them.

Daniel Defazio

You are correct and I changed it. You have no idea how many times I said "Judges Guild" in the video and had to redo the line.

Daniel Defazio

I appreciate the feedback. I got to the content--the three big piece of news at the 47 second mark. And that's with a 30-second commercial. I can't get to it faster.

Jeff Jones

I'm already invested in Castles and Crusades and other games, so I'll be fine.

Jeff Jones

Cynthia Williams is the Lorraine Williams of 5th edition

No need to defend yourself, dear PDM. I will watch and like every video on YouTube. No matter the topic. Just wanted to give you feedback. I love what you are doing here. Just stay as you are and do the videos you like.

David McGuire

The D&D Adventure to change it all in my experience was S3 Expedition to the Barrier Peaks. All sorts of stuff popped out of "Pandora's box" as a result of running that one!

Stefan

I watched the beginning, and see your point about the timing of the news items. i suppose I’m just not a big fan of the “latest news” type videos, but maybe these work better on YouTube as far as generating clicks/comments are concerned.

Masterhit

I don't blame you! I never even heard of Judge's Academy UNTIL your video...Judge's Guild is always in my mind linked to D&D.

Drago Russo

Well, yeah the commercial was terrible. Goodman Games is great and thanks to you I have their products. But I would not be interested if that commercial would have been my first exposure. They need a better choice for the next one and let that commercial just lose on their death saves.

Drago Russo

Hasbro sells toys and toy sales are not what they used to be. Small children want interactive toys and they are already watching screens at the age of 2. That is death to Hasbro and their toys. I think society needs to let children play make believe with toys and not have phones and tablets put in front of them at all. But hey, that's just what I think. lol

Jeff Heinen

I think I am done with WotC forever at this point. I've gone full shadowdark.

James C

This is a pretty good prediction. This is where I hope you are wrong PDM. I hope table top still remains a significant method of play over VTT. And I laughed at the infamous Rob Liefield Captain America cover.

Graham Kane

I also notice that there is a sale at the moment on DnD Beyond where the digital versions of books are 40% off. Coincidence?

Adam Maag

It’s a fine video, but it’s a travesty that it already has more views then the lost city video.

Jay

PDM, I appreciate your insight on this matter. However, I’m not so certain that WOTC will succeed in their efforts for online D&D gaming. My group could care less about D&D since our games are amalgamations of various rules sources and some collaborative made up stuff on the fly. As for the online aspects of D&D, aside from Baldur’s Gate 3, most of those didn’t do so well and with so many competitive video games already out there or on the way, I’m guessing they may lose out. Most people I know want to play at a table with friends in social gatherings. Yeah, I could be wrong about this new generation of players, but time will tell. I still laugh remembering when you said how much you like and appreciate corporations giving the example of Coke or Oreos prior to the OGL scandal. Corporations are sociopathic in nature as their goals are to make money for shareholders by any means necessary. Furthermore, on the matter of a Recession. I’m not sure where you’re getting your news but a simple trip to the grocery store shows how prices have significantly increased. Some online posts showing how prices for products have nearly doubled over the course of two years. We are definitely in a recession by the colloquial definition. Two negative quarters of GDP growth. However, one must know that in the last few years our government has been changing various definitions to cover for political failures. Middle class families in my community have definitely noticed it. Have you seen the price of gasoline, eggs, or meat lately? Citations Below Attempts to change definition of recession. Since then, they have already made other changes to various other definitions, and nobody seems to be able to define what a woman is. Hmm… Politico, CNN, MSNBC journalists back off recession definition they previously espoused. MSNBC's Stephanie Ruhle, CNN's John Harwood no longer pushing how they once defined a recession. Recession. The colloquial definition until 2022 was simply two negative quarters of GDP growth. I clearly see it, my family sees it, my friends, my community, the church, and everyone I meet and speak to daily.

Jim B

And, here I thought I was the only one who was surprised by the economics talk.

john seddon

I thought the commercial was excellent. Surely some early ‘80s style throwback. It reminded me of Seth Skorkowsky’s “How the D&D Mimic was invented (probably)” - possibly the greatest you tube video of all time - I kid you not. Watch it!

Jay

Nope you were not alone and I could have cited at least a half dozen other articles and videos from various sources. These three were not the most noteworthy but were open on my browser at the time of my reply. There are many more that spell out what is to come and it's not looking good sadly.

Jay

It was very Randy "The Macho Man" Savage in nature. I thought it was funny if not an 80s style throwback as you suggested. :)
