The Module Changed D&D FOREVER

Comments

Bagel-Man

One of my favorite modules, I wrote a paper back in high school how this changed the adventure format for modules back in the day.

A Name Apart

The dichotomy between Grimdark and Marvel Super Hero is useful for me. I do like narrative, but I prefer it more Grimdark and less Marvel Super Hero

Since Vimeo is again broken on my Android phone, I offer a solution. Click on the video you want to watch. This takes you to the individual page for the video. Go to the ellipsis in the top right and use 'copy link' Then go to a browser and paste that URL and go. Note that it is a Patreon link while the Vimeo only link that doesn't work is not a patreon URL. I'm sure it has something to do with my default apps, but I don't see anything wrong so using this instead

I had the same problem. I uninstalled the Patreon app from my phone and just play the videos in the web browser.

I uninstalled vimeo the last time it didn't work and that fixed it. Now it's broken a second time

This is a great video, especially your extended comments. I’m currently leaning hard into sandbox play, with the barest story and hooks holding it together. I played story games for years and love them dearly, as a matter of fact. My oldest friend run DnD using story arcs and I love playing with him, as well. I never played sandbox much when I was younger, either. Deadly dungeons and all that, yes but we got into the story and tried to complete them. It’s fun exploring this style and seeing where it goes, i’m looking forwards to blending the two when I’m ready. Great commercial, by the way! I mean it.

Never played or ran this module. Ravenloft was used more like a threat that a game setting by my DM in high school.

PDM's right too many take the idea of story too far. Story doesn't equal plot armor. Story doesn't mean that the PC's always win. Oh, and nice Kickstarter sponsor. But what if we want just a Deathbringer mini? :)

David Ford

That is the conundrum that I face with my group; I want to tell a story but I also want characters dying after failed saving throws. I tend to favor the former over the latter.

I remember Ravenloft first coming out around the time I was in Jr High/Middle School. The isometric maps blew me away. And the random encounters via tarot cards were a nice addition. And yes, I agree that Ravenloft and Dragonlance was the beginning of story driven adventures. Sandbox vs Story is something that affects tabletop and even video games. Sandbox dominated first (Gygax modules, EverQuest) but now it’s all storytelling (5e and Mercer, World of Warcraft). It’s also the reason why people are invested in character backgrounds; they don’t expect anyone to die and the story is supposed to cater to them. The pendulum needs to swing back to the middle. Thankfully I am seeing it with OSR types of games and even video games with a main story but an open world to explore at your leisure. Excellent video PDM. Nostalgia is always fun.

I keep getting Sorry, we couldn’t find that page when I try to watch... Any ideas?

PDM, this is one of my favorite videos as it speaks to my childhood. I absolutely loved the Hammer Horror films and the Hickman products (Ravenloft, Pharaoh, and the Desert of Desolation Series). Still remember the day Ravenloft hit the shop and bought it immediately. It really did change the way I thought of the game. Rather than dungeon crawls where players essentially just went underground to kill all the monsters in the zoo AKA Dungeon. There was a need for plot, villain motivations, NPCs with their own story arch’s giving them meaning, and enough plot background to provide a framework for a good story to be developed by the players.

Great video. I am looking forward to rewatch it on YT (as always) - Satutations!

Well said. I love a story. Most critical is how it gets written between the GM and the players

Great video. D&D and other RPGs, to me, never were games like Monopoly or Settlers of Catan to be "won." They were always story generators. Before I ever played D&D I was told stories of the adventures my friends experienced. When I look back on memorable sessions playing RPGs myself it's never about what the characters achieved using the game's mechanics; it's always about the unforgettable story events.

Thank you PDM, this kind of content is why I am a Patron. Game play and incite. I get re-energized every time I watch. Thanks again.

In the video you mentioned that there was a video on the way you run dwellers of the forbidden city, I can’t find the video anywhere. Can you please tell me what it’s called so I can search it up? Your series on the keep on the borderlands was one of the best things I’ve ever watched.
