Excited to watch when I’m off from work PDM!

Timothy S Wattigny

I know schadenfreude is taking joy in other's misery. What do you call taking joy in other's joy? Seeing/hearing about Bob's joy brings a smile to my cold heart

SJBehindtheScreen

great vid, glad you got a glimpse of the vtt, and I'm reminded how important the community (including wotc execs) is to our experience of the hobby, and how unimportant it appears to be to the company that wants to make money with the brand. wotc has a lot of money to throw at this, but I hope the other offerings like foundry, fantasygrounds, etc. can continue to find a market and be successful

PDM, I really enjoyed this video. As some may have noticed, I'm not a big fan of multi-national corporations and I have absolutely ZERO experience with any VTT stuff. However, this new way of gaming has piqued some interest and hopefully will spur others to innovate on new VTT platforms if it catches on for younger players. The free market aside from any monopolies is a good thing and typically brings prices to a reasonable level just as it has with most other technology such as TV's, Cell Phones, etc.. Anyway, if you don't mind, I have some questions you may or may not be able to answer. So here goes. How does this VTT handle: 1. Hidden stuff such as a. Traps b. Secret Doors c. Enemies in shadows 2. Puzzles a. Are they video game type point and click to solve such as player places object on device and it opens a locked iron door? b. Are they simply described or narrated by the GM, or perhaps both? 3. Social Encounters a. Are there miniature animations or cut scenes for NPC reactions such as in Baldur’s Gate? 4. Can the VTT program do voice changing for players and GM’s roleplaying their characters? 5. Will they be selling physical copies of the new rules? I don’t expect you to know all this stuff from your limited time with the VTT but any information you might have would be appreciated and again thanks again for all you do.

I tried to search for an antonym for schadenfreude as I was curious myself and came up with the following: Vicarious Embarrassment or possibly Mitgefühl in German or compassion in English but did not find much else. Hope this helps.

The VTT sounds pretty slick, but as someone who plays live with board game pawns and battle maps sketched on a folding dry erase mat I'm probably going to give it a miss. Even when I play online through Discord and happen to need a VTT the flat ones like D&D Beyond and Owlbear Rodeo work just fine. For those who like the 3D experience, though, I hope the pricing structure doesn't shut out players who don't have a lot of disposable income. With the time and money they're putting into it, though, they'll *have* to charge a lot to recoup their investment. (Unless it's intended as some sort of loss leader ... but then what's the *real* product? Surely not books.)

There is a right way to play for you and your players - you just have to find that and enjoy. No two tables are the same. Glad you got the opportunity to play and hang with your peeps.

Always wanted to go to Gen Con or Origins back in the 80's, teenage me could not afford to cross four states to do that. On a lark I went to Pax Unplugged stag and it was the second gaming con I went to, the first was Games Day '97. While epic, it felt like I was wandering around a contemporary issue of White Dwarf, an irl catalog, not the best time. But PaxU was a whole different animal. Went with an empty backpack, a bottle of water(should have had two), a list of vendors I wanted to see and no expectations. Dang it was impressive. As my backpack and then second bag got heavier, I really found myself having a good workout and time talking with devs, distributors and two devs I know personally. Absolutely a good time, I recommend going especially if you live in the Philly-Metro area like I do. Jersey side park at the Lindenwold PATCO station, there is a Tim Horton's on the corner, and a good deal of late night dining. $6 round trip, pay with a $20 and get dollar coins in change. Driving and parking in Philly kinda sucks and the four block walk to and from the convention center will do you good. Not sure of the best place to park Pennsylvania side and go in. Try not to go alone, wish some of the crew had come, maybe next year. Drink a good deal of water or get the impressive charlie horse I did. Two days for that to go away.

I think the concept of joy is communicative, for feeling it for another persons is the same as feeling for oneself. Thus we get to just use the short word joy. And then you get ranty, long winded obsessive types like me who feel they have to explain everything and do not know when to shut up and go on, and on, and on...

I like the VTT, and I personally think that if webcams is included then you can achieve that same level of RP. I see no difference between minis + and terrain vs a VTT. If your are comfortable with technology. After 30 years in IT, I think I am. Personally I would lay a TV flat on my table if I lived where I could play in person with my friends. Using GIMP/Blender to create my maps the same way people create terrain pieces. And somethings I like better, automatic mapping and fog of war over endlessly trying to explain the dimensions of a room to cartographers. /shrug I just want to play and I will do it any way I can.

I would like to know how this is different from the VTT they tried to launch with 4th edition (D&D Table, I think it was to be named).

Dear PDM: *cough* name drop *cough*, hey you got a little sump’n sump’n on the end of your nose there. LOL, I think it is awesome you got to meet Mercer and Cao and they knew who you are. You keep baiting those clicks. RP Archive is awesome, sadly he has had long Covid and has struggled for a while. I will never ever make any terrain like RP Archive, too much work. Your UDT is the beginning and end of my terrain crafting. Your response to BWB’s fangasm over Matt Mercer was hilarious: ‘Yeah, he eats too.’ classic. Loved your analysis of the styles of D&D, Theater of the Mind (TotM,) Virtual Tabletop (VTT) , and Miniatures and Terrain (MaT). I like the hybrid TotM and MaT of UDT or even the ICRPG paper terrain. Miniatures help me, a more visual learner, with relative perspective, so UDT is perfect for me. Further, I think UDT enhances rather than detracts from the story telling. Stickiness, interesting, like you mentioned in the past about choosing an OS for your phone or battery platform for your power tools, choose carefully. Your opinion on terrain impacting how players interact cannot be stated often enough, I think that Hollywood and lots of others forget that shiny special effects cannot make up for a bad story and bad story telling. Good story telling needs very little to carry it. So glad that you and wife had a great time at PAX Unplugged and for all the great stories and experiences you enjoyed and took the time to share with us, your Patrons. Take care, MrGunn

As always I am appreciative to watch your videos. Over the years I have absolutely become a better DM in part to your videos. I also really like the fact that because of you I learned about Bob. I watch his channel as well and he is just such a nice guy. It says a lot about both of you that you were hanging out. Add in Shawn Merwin, Teos Abadia, Mike Shea, and Matthew Colville and there you go. Everything I have learned on YouTube or Podcasts is from all of you. Thank you for what you do and share. I live off of VTTs so it is really important to me. Well my second living is from VTTs. lol

I was surprised I got the first comment, I responded an hour or two after it was posted😂

So basically they are remaking Neverwinter Nights.

Most importantly, I think they learned not to rely on Microsoft. That's what killed the last one, they built it on a Microsoft program that Microsoft stopped supporting.

I suspect the monetisation will come from microtransactions to improve your in-game avatar. For instance, a rogue in leather armour would have default-looking leather armour in the standard issue colour. You could buy elaborate-looking armour and possibly apply a dark blue, red or purple hue to individualise the look. None of these purchases will give in-game benefits, they will be vanity purchases only.

RPGs are a social activity for me, will never play using any VTT
