Deathbringer Update!

Bagel-Man

Excited to purchase the game when it comes out professor

PerilDice

Yeah... Had to add the "m" to get anywhere.

SpeakingBeast

Sounds like you have a great team behind Deathbringer - looking forward to one holding it in my hand! :D

JP Trudel

I think it’s a good decision to keep Deathbringer with 6 stats and AC. I prefer it that way. I also like that with 3 to 18 we can have the players roll under. A fighter with 17 Strength really feels much more competent when he roll under 17 rather than having only +3 on a DC 15

NØKKEN_WAITS

A really cool slice of news! Looking forward to hearing updates. I think going with shadowdark/OSE compatibility is a clever move.

Jeff Jones

I hope you're feeling better, PDM.

Matthew Crismali

You're in Knock #4?! That's great! Also, super excited for Deathbringer; I'm sure it will be great and worth the wait. Thanks for the update.

Raven Shadowz

I like the 3 stats, but I shall buy it with 6 stats once it comes out.

GM James

Awesome stuff, really looking forward to seeing the next evolution of Deathbringer. I've been using the die-fold as the basis for my hack for Shadowdark, and I gotta say, my player absolutely love it and it's made the game so much better!

Gregory Helding

“It’s not what should happen. It’s what will happen.” Knowing that is what makes the difference between your insightful content and all the clickbait claptrap about the industry.

I CANT WAIT! I love the economy and expediency of Deathbringer. The DB dice, and the whole game idea of holding on, biding your time…to use when it’s absolutely crucial…it’s so dramatic and very lifelike. When you, Professor, are waiting to release DB until the time is perfectly ripe…is you using all your dice at once, to save the day. It’s brilliant!!! And the irreverent tone. And the danger. I love it.

James M Spahn

First, it's an absolute honor to help bring your vision of Deathbringer to life and you're a delight to collaborate with PDM. Secondly, I think that while comparisons to Shadowdark are apt, folks should know that Deathbringer will absolutely be a stand alone game with its own identity and unique features - and it's awesome. I love what we've created so far and look forward to see what the next year of collaboration brings us.

Ben Waters

Very excited to get a copy when it happens. It does kind of make sense to keep compatibility with the rest of the OSR.

I’m so chuffed to be making Deathbringer happy! I’m a bit sad that your game won’t be too mechanically different than DnD. I came up in RPGs in the 80’s and I loved learning new systems and seeing how they represented ideas of modeling “real life” and the fiction through their rules. I do agree with your insight on making the game more accessible that way and selling more copies in the current environment. I also hope you keep enough rules add ons or variations to have the system express the tone you want. You can’t just do this through implied setting, art, or word choice. System does matter in conveying the totality of your vision. You are influenced by Warhammer and I feel like you want a rules lite way to make the game more cinematic , grimdark, and humorous. I know waffling and making adjustments is part of the process, but honor what it is you do with your rules at your home table. That’s why we re here and why people click on your videos. Not just to make it acceptable, palatable or sellable. All that being said, good on you for iterating and making the thing, a damn sight more than I’ve done! I’m excited for it and will certainly be a backer and booster for your creation.

Joshua Slavin

Really disappointed in those folks that have misused your trust as a creator. Completely understand the choices to keep a lot more of the developments under your hat going forward. All that said, very excited to hear about the advancements and plans for Deathbringer in 2025+. Perhaps one of the side projects or spin offs that could be done/outsourced, would be Zine article sized "conversion guides" for various systems from larger publishers. Making even more of those other systems adventures and media accessible to DB audience. I noticed the other day that spells in the WFRP 4E books aren't too bad translated into Deathbringer (as I currently understand it). As an example a spell as written was going to allow the players to pool their fate points (used force re-rolls etc.) that are only given out at character creation, then use them from the pool, and after everyone has had a turn to access the pool, any remaining points redistribute evenly with the caster getting the shorted if points didn't divide evenly among the party. A similar spell that pooled DB Dice could be a fun one for those "BBEG" Finale scenarios.

PDM, thanks for the update. I will be supporting this product for sure. The reasoning behind your decisions is very well thought out and logical. Keeping the system friendly in most aspects to the other popular games such as Shadow Dark and Old School Essentials will very likely make it more appealing to those already familiar with the D&D type systems. You are correct in taking your time on this one even more so with 6E coming out. Slow and steady does win the race. Never rush to failure. The new Deathbringer sounds exciting.

Michael Butcher

Dear PDM, As a professional editor who works for a publishing company, I'd be happy to serve as a copyeditor if you're ever looking for one for this project.

Cee-Jay

So many advantages being part of the OSR (and OSR Adjacent) ecosystem. Yes part of it is mechanics/design, but also a big part of it is the expectation that encounters need not be balanced. This makes mixing and matching much easier for the DM, because you really don't have to change much of anything, because you aren't expected to achieve some exquisite, most perfect balance that delivers a certain outcome for your players. Take DCC for example... arguably it's 3.5 based but I find that the feel and the expectation fit seamlessly with OSR stuff. In one of my current campaigns, I'm using OSE rules featuring Castle Xyntillan and the Town of Savoy (Designed for Swords and Wizardry) as the starting point and a bunch of Goodman Games modules (designed for DCC) populating the world around, along with some of the Necrotic Gnome OSE stuff. All work great and pretty much just play them as-is, without adjustment. As a Judge/Referee/GM, it's hard to justify leaving this ecosystem because there is just so much amazing content to use out there. Of course 5e also has a huge ecosystem, it's just that tone and style I want and the simple user-friendly module design I want, is available in spades in the OSR. I used to spend a lot of time collecting monster stat blocs and other info prepping for 5e games... but now the modules I use already have everything I need on one page and GM life is so much better. No offense to folks that like 5e, it's a great game too. Really looking forward to Deathbringer!

Raven Shadowz

I think it's really sad that people think it's okay to steal you and other authors hard work. I hope they get caught, and pay for their crimes.

James C

Rock on PDM. I will support your game once it launches on Kickstarter.

Chad Wilkerson

Total bummer that it'll be at least a year out, but I'm stoked to hear about the future plans!

Tuska

Wish it were sooner, but its your project so yeah.

jnlsn family

This will be the first time I back a game through kickstarter. Can't wait.

BrianV

PDM, I am super happy for you and your success this far. Looking forward to updates and when the KS will start. Additionally, I think ICRPG goes well with Deathbringer too! I currently run your rules and use ICRPG loot tables, hero milestone/path progression, timer die and target room number. This leads to lots of cinematic gameplay! As always wishing you the best and a speedy recovery.

Mark Adams

I'm very patient and I'll wait until it's available and I'll gladly pay for it.

Graham Kane

Absolutely backing this when it’s announced!

MrGunn

Professor, I am not sure how I missed this video. I blame the Moonsnow, must have gone on a real bender... Yikes, I gotta get my my life together. Like you, I am NOT looking forward to all the BS hype that will spring up around Wizbros D&D 5whatever and the VTT. Ptewy! Loving what I am learning about the Deathbringer TTRPG so far: Six Ability Scores - Yes! Hit Points - Yes! Armor Class not Defense - Yes! Difficulty Class - Yes! Zone Combat - Yes! UDT - Yes! More uses for Deathbringer Dice - Yes, fantastic! Declare Your Turn & Roll - Sounds exciting, I don't like being bored as a player, and HATE waiting for the slow kidz! Don't calculate the odds Billy, just roll the freaking dice! Leveling Up but not Invincibility - Yes! My DB Wishlist: Roll to cast or point system Would love to see a system for wizards to create spells. Would love to see a system for DMs to create clerical spells based on different gods. An inventory system like Five Torches Deep would be great. Yes, I agree, the Merry Mushmen are great! I think a 4Q 2025 release on Halloween in time for Thanksgiving / Christmas shopping would be great! I see you gathering emails via a newsletter, great marketing! I am very much looking forward to Deathbringer! Glad we can make DB Happy, now I am nervous.... Thanks for sharing PDM!

Daniel Defazio

Thank you for the kind words and suggestions. DB will have roll to cast. Clerics will not be a thing. They are unique to D&D and they are tension killers, restoring HP, which I do not like. You'll see my thinking on this soon.

Darby Wilson

Can I make a suggestion everyone will hate me for? Attacks of opportunity for leaving a zone. In my own game (mod of 5e) that’s been the weak spot. There’s no risk for a range based creature to just fallback and destroy melee combatants.

Bryan Jones

I do side based initiative and the system you described is exactly how I run my in home games now. Everyone declares their actions, everyone rolls at the same time, I go around the table and hear all the results from the rolls (damage is rolled at the same time as to hit) and then I describe the action of the entire round the players just preformed. My players thoroughly enjoy this. It keeps them attentive and engaged and I enjoy interpreting the outcome of the dice rolls. Can't wait for you to bring DB to Kickstarter!

Beardy B.

I like the PF2 solution. If you are a trained martial class, you can make an attack of opportunity if your opponent leaves the melee. This way, you can just run past most classes or opponents but a warrior class like Deathbringer or Witch Hunter can deliver a club to the small of the back or use a halberd to trip you up or take an arm.

Firstspear

One of the reasons I enjoy your content is because you embed business concepts in your discussion. Two big concepts you discussed here are Share of Voice (D&D is going to flood the comm sphere, so a small voice gets lost) and Constant Sum of Resources (developers have only so much time and resources, so developing content that is more broadly applicable makes better sense) I think getting some good artwork prior to the Kickstarter will be important to draw people in and comm the mood/feeling of the game. I personally love the grim dark B&W look you've already established in Deathbringer's logo. I guess my last thought - Shadowdark was hugely successful in how they approached their Kickstarter, so it might be worthwhile to look at their 'go to market' strategy and emulate the pieces that make sense. You got my support and best wishes PDM Now I should go do whatever the hell I do

Beardy B.

I'm excited and I hope you can take full benefit from your fantastic collaborators! I know that you have left a couple of concepts behind in this development process, but I hope some of them will show up as "variant rules" in the book. I'm happy that when this book finally comes out, Deathbringer will finally have time for his second favorite thing in the world: Victorian and Edwardian literature.

Todd Sharp

Looking forward to Deathbringer.. I mostly glean ideas from rpg's instead of switching systems completely. But, this might be an exception!

Tim Phistry

Where is the 50 page version here on Patreon as mentioned in the video? My little brain is having a hard time wrapping around how this works.

Shadoath

I can’t wait for this to come out. Very excited to fund the finished product!

Anthony Cabrera

This is extremely exciting news and I'm here for it! Can't wait to be a part of this wild ride! Bring on the CARNAGE!
