I've been on the Shieldwall for a few years now and am only recently a Dungeon Dweller here on your Patreon but watching Crown & Skull grow in to what it is now has been an amazing process. I agree wholeheartedly that this is the Game of the Year. I am confident that it will stand the test of time even knowing it's only January.

MrGunn

Thanks for sharing this review with us. I like some of the interesting concepts presented.

Happy to see Runehammer creating innovative products! Wish him much success. How is DB going?

A Name Apart

I would have liked if you could have went into a bit more more detail on why each of the game's features that you highlight are cool

PDM, thanks for reviewing this one. I've been waiting to find out what RUNEHAMMER came up with this time. I like what I see and will likely buy it this week. If memory serves, I believe the idea of getting rid of the hit roll started with the game Into the Odd but not 100% and don't have time to fact check myself right not. Also, I believe Coville borrowed that concept as well in his new game. The jury is still out on getting that one though. Yet for the reasons you have already mentioned coupled with fact that I really enjoy Runehammer products means I will keep my money going to Brandish, PDM, and Scotty. I've been a fan of the Crafters Guild since the beginning right along with your first video the day it came out. I suppose its part loyalty and part knowing I will be getting a quality product both I and my players will enjoy. I also find that most products that are produced from focus groups and teams tend to lose the creators vision, if they even had one, and make things I don't want to buy. Anyway, I'm excited about this game and I'll be spreading the word about the release too. Thanks again.

MrGunn

@Jay As usual I enjoyed your insights. As to Matt Colvilles RPG, he can stuff olives.

I need this game!

Just checked out his website and there is a character creator for Crown and Skull, in and of itself is an excellent tool to get a grip on what the game is about. And I tend to want to take a look at a character sheet and creation first to get a feel for what is important to the game. And I came across it by random, I feel he really needs to push it to give a taste of what is ahead. Really good stuff. I am going to pick this up, just not sure when this year, maybe when his shop is up and running, have the feeling it's going to be a rockin shop!

A buddy and I happened to sit next to Hank at the recent Philly Gaming Con during the Frank Mentzer Q&A. Hank is a really cool and approachable dude and even gave my friend a copy of his book.

I chuckled REALLY hard at that deathbringer joke This game looks ABSOLUTELY incredible. I can't wait for this book to show up on my doorstep. What is going with this system is so interesting and wonderfully in opposition to the mainstream direction this hobby is going in. This totally builds off Viking Death Squad (which happens to be one of my very favourite TTRPG's of all damn time). Can't wait to break this out. I keep meaning to check out burning wheel... but I am honestly intimidated by the crunch. I am definitely a Mork Borg man.

Masterhit

I'll be getting both most likely. I have multiple copies of other Runhammer games products and DM Scotty's game and will buy physical Deathbringer when it arrives as well. No shade on Coville from me - the guy has vision, and passion and seems to really take care of his employees. His success isn't a reason to bag on him. I have Burning wheel also :) It's kind of nutty to me... I guess I'm too into extreme simplification like Cairn/Into the Odd etc. Of course, I still love DCC!

Masterhit

I was pausing and reading some of the pages - looks great! Though, one item table I saw (page 310) seemed to be for a Ring 'Blade Ring' with the description 'An extinct form of coin from ages past'. Odd or perhaps a typo?

Jay

@Masterhit, you are clearly mistaken if you believe I “bagged” on anyone for their success? However, if you are addressing MrGunn, please use proper context. I have my own reasons for not supporting Colville’s products and outside of simple preference, I don’t believe I’ve stated anything else. So, if you like what he produces then that’s fine with me. Even I don’t think his stuff is completely terrible or anything. I just don’t want to waste my time and money on some things I don’t really need or that don’t fit my group’s playstyle. As for Burning Wheel, I tend to agree with you. I find it great for those you like a lot of crunch in their game but it’s not for me and yeah it does seem “a bit nutty” in my opinion as well. I also really like simplification but more middle of the road rather than extreme. I try to be careful in not sacrificing nuance for speed otherwise I feel some verisimilitude might be lost. I’ve browsed through both Cairn and Into the Odd but never played them. However, if you did, let me know how it worked out for your group. I also like almost all of what DCC has to offer but aside from a grim dark setting I likely wouldn’t use the magic corruption system for spell casters when there are other weapons and items that mimic those things almost exactly without the potential side effects. For example, if one of my players can throw a potion or explosive that might have the same effect as a fire bolt or fire ball with no risk of magical corruption…well I think you likely get the idea. Anyway, thanks for the input and have a good one.
